D&D 5E (2014) With the Holy Trinity out, let's take stock of 5E

The verdict: A fantastic edition of D&D. The best version ever for new players. For players who like 3.x/Pathfinder, well, it's a more complicated answer.* Creative success? Yes! The future: Regarding the tabletop RPG, this fully depends on licensing. With the right partners, I think this...

CODENAME: MORNINGSTAR Kickstarter Launched - and it's for PATHFINDER!

The idea sounds interesting, but having invested in RealmWorks + HeroLab, I don't think it's for me.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape Lives!

If you ask, you may have to pay. If someone comes to you, you get a cut of the revenues from licensing. WotC may feel as you do that digital tools are unnecessary with this edition. If they get a good offer, they'll listen, but if not - oh, well!

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape Lives!

No doubt it's disappointment. But it's also compounded by vague promotion. If they make an RPG product people want, they'll no doubt have plenty of fans here. If all they do is cryptically promise that "something special is coming", well, what would you expect? Vague promotions from a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape Lives!

But it's certainly not just what we want. It's having experienced people behind the project. Otherwise, even if funded, delays can be maddening. Something like a kickstarter for an RPG tabletop toolkit by a small company is bound to be fraught with issues. Someone on the staff will get sick...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape Lives!

RPG kickstarters in general are a crap shoot. Add in tech to the mix and, well... Bad things, man....bad things.

    D&D 5E (2014) What is the logic behind one 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th level spell?

Thinking about it more, though, you could use the alternate rest options in the DMG that allow for shorter rest periods between recharges. This would mean that while they only have 1 slot/level for 6, 7, 8, and 9 at a given time, they could recharge those during the day and thus double (or...

    D&D 5E (2014) What is the logic behind one 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th level spell?

I think for me, the ideal D&D lies somewhere in between 3.5 and 5E (and I don't mean 4E ;) ). I think 5E goes too far in blunting the power curve, but does an excellent job with keeping low-level monsters relevant. (As one would expect since the game now really covers a shorter power...

    D&D 5E (2014) What is the logic behind one 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th level spell?

It's the "sweet spot" theory in action. The 5E game accomplishes what 4E set out to do as well, and that's keep the traditional level 5-11 (ish) so called "sweet spot" of D&D maintained across 20 levels. If you enjoyed games that are played higher than the sweet spot, this edition (so far)...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape Lives!

I guess we'll see, but there are already campaign products out there that would support multiple systems (like Realm Works). Not that competition would be a bad thing. Having 5E was a coup for them, but since that's no longer a thing, it will likely be an uphill climb. As to the teaser, I'm...

    D&D 5E (2014) A 5e OGL isn't going to cause another Pathfinder scenario and here's why

I doubt Paizo wants to make a monster book for 5E. And they likely don't have the resources to do it either (unless one of their product lines were sacrificed to do so). All that aside, though, Paizo has gotten a lot of its monster material from 3PPs already (mostly from the Tome of Horrors...

    D&D 5E (2014) A 5e OGL isn't going to cause another Pathfinder scenario and here's why

I think the lesson is: if you use the OGL for one edition, you must use it for the next edition. If WotC had used the OGL for 4E from the start, Paizo may have gone 4E. All the 3PPs were lining up to use 4E. Then delays happened. Then the GSL happened.

    D&D 5E (2014) A NEW interview with Mike Mearls

The last time the release schedule was this slow for the RPG was the late 1970s. And some (if not most) of the books themselves aren't even being produced by WotC. It's almost like the intention is to completely segue into outsourcing the tabletop RPG. WotC might then only be quality control...

D&D 5E (2014) How Close do you stick with the Game As Written?

I house ruled in 1E and 2E a lot. But in 3.0, 3.5 and Pathfinder, I play RAW. If I were to play 5E, I would try RAW first.

Pathfinder 1E Occult Adventures playtest available

Personally I wish Paizo would stop with new level 1-20 character options. There are so many character combos and options at this point that no one can hope to even try them all much less experience them from levels 1-20. I do still want epic rules (since mythic is way over the top for me) so...
