    D&D 5E (2024) Thoughts on Infinite Staircase?

It was a big ziggurat! I think the original was around double the size. The city in Red Nails was also a single very large building (although at one time the fields round about had been farmed). These days we would call a single-building city an archology. We are really talking about "city" in...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

Don’t matter which book they were in, it’s only comparable to species that were unique to the same book. PHB3 came out in 2010, during the height of Pathfinder popularity and less than 2 years before D&D Next. I doubt it sold well.

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

How many people actually bought 4e Dark Sun though? If not many people own the book not many people can play the species. The only valid comparison is with other species that only appeared in that book. Then you have to consider the mechanics and the lore. The appearance isn’t the only reason...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

I’m not familiar with them, but I’m thinking Tholian. I don’t have an issue with very alien PCs, we already have thri-kreen.

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

Strangely, even though I'm a fan of Moorcock and an 80s D&D player, I don't like metal music!

Planescape Exploded city map of Sigil on Inkarnate

As I alluded to in another thread, Sigil takes at least some of it's inspiration from Victorian London. So a population of around 5 million would be appropriate.

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

Even if the patron were good, the subclass powers are geared around control, coercion and fear. So not really a nice person.

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

Yeah, generally when you design a setting you tee up dominos to fall in whatever direction the players decide to push them. Metaplot puts the setting on rails and stops the players achieving anything at all.

I would have gone with paladin. But I guess you can use Oath of the Crown out of the box.

    D&D 5E (2024) Thoughts on Infinite Staircase?

I think it's a shame they didn't include an update of the original wilderness map and encounters. My memory of running the original adventure was we had more fun in the wilderness than the dungeon.

    D&D 5E (2024) Thoughts on Infinite Staircase?

No player map. On a VTT put up some art on the screen. I did something similar for a Faywild excursion. Use real time elapsed (minus combat). Or just throw in an encounter when things get slow or the players spend too much time discussing what to do next. And for any rest periods, obviously...

    D&D 5E (2024) Thoughts on Infinite Staircase?

The original adventure had the lower levels of the ziggurat (octahedron) for that. The city is set up as an urban adventure rather than a dungeon bash, so you don't need detailed maps for every location. There is enough in the book that I could do the rest on the fly.

Which 80s wargames and adventure games do you still play?

I played a fair bit of Car Wars in the 80s. Great fun. You might describe it as RPG adjacent. I remember drawing out an arena map on a huge piece of graph paper, but I can’t remember where I got the graph paper from.

Wizards Goes Big with Vecna: Eve of Ruin

Yeah, I set it in Luskan. I think the art was new - it certainly appears to be in the same style as the rest of the book.

Wizards Goes Big with Vecna: Eve of Ruin

In Ghosts of Saltmarsh there is a ship hanging of the side of a warehouse. The illustration looks fine - until you realise the ship is the opposite way round to the map.
