The Welsh coal mine has closed down, leaving the miners unemployed. A corporation has opened up near by offering abundant cheep clean energy. Turns out the evil corporation are pumping toxic waste down the mine, creating the deadly mutant maggots. The day is saved by the nearby hippie commune...

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

So, it's obvious the authorities have something terrible to hide. Pretty sure it was in the original boxed set. But "dragon" has a metaphorical significance which makes it obvious. It's the same reason Shadowrun's megacorps are run by dragons. Maybe my players are a little more genre-savvy?

Three gave plenty of lectures on environmental themes. Not to mention snarky anti-authoritarian comments.

    You suggesting “half-white” isn’t lecturing?

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

The irony is, Dark Sun was always “woke” (like Star Trek and Doctor Who).

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

If players have heard anything at all about Dark Sun it will be “evil sorcerer kings”. And even if they haven’t heard anything at all, it’s blindingly obvious from a meta perspective. Same with Strahd, you don’t need to have heard of him to know what a guy with a widows peak and black cape in a...

That, I know is in Canada (although not where in Canada).

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

Now if we can get past the shock-horror that fantasy art styles have changed over the last 40 years, maybe we can look at where steampunk has actually intersected with D&D. The first callout is Ravenloft. Not so much the original module, which owes more to the Universal and Hammer movie...

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

In my case, it’s just that I don’t know where this particular “Victoria” is, there being a lot of places with that name, and I don’t know what BA stands for either.

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

Expecting the players to be surprised about the sorcerer kings is kind of like expecting them to be surprised that Strahd is a vampire. In that case my players role played their characters being surprised though.

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

That’s in America, right? I have a friend who is a hardcore steampunk cosplayer. Anyway the reason you should use the correct labels is because if you actually want to run a medieval or steampunk D&D campaign, people won’t know what you mean. Also, steampunk enthusiasts and medievalists are...

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

The wheelchair is post-WW2, in design and technology required to make it. And it bothers me less than the impractical lack of trousers in early D&D.

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

One way of dealing with preserving/defiling would be to keep track of Defilement Points for the party. These could have an effect on the large scale game - faction reputation, bastions etc (as well as making the players feel suitably guilty when they rack up a dozen Defilement Points whist...
