Purple Dragon Knight Retooled as Banneret in D&D's Heroes of Faerun Book

It’s not just an issue of “power budget”. It an issue of the pet can’t overshadow the master. And I don’t care about “proper” dragon. Lore must be the servant of the game, not the master. Just as an NPC veteran does not need to be the same as a PC fighter, a pet dragon does not need to be the...

    D&D 5E (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

I would never ever run an adventure without prep, for a very simple reason: I’m dyslexic and can’t read quickly whilst also doing other things, I need to commit it to working memory. Easy to run isn’t a feature I look for in an adventure in any case. I’ve been DMing for 43 years, I don’t need...

Purple Dragon Knight Retooled as Banneret in D&D's Heroes of Faerun Book

The advantage of the way the PDK did it was it was weak enough that it wouldn’t overshadow the characters, and it automatically progressed with character level. You wouldn’t want to use actual dragon stat blocks or aged based growth.

    D&D 5E (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

There isn’t much player agency in KotB. It’s in the middle of nowhere, there is nothing to do apart from go to the caves and murder humanoids. You want agency, do a city.

Purple Dragon Knight Retooled as Banneret in D&D's Heroes of Faerun Book

It’s a bit too powerful for a feat chain.

Purple Dragon Knight Retooled as Banneret in D&D's Heroes of Faerun Book

Yeah, but the PDK was way better. Also, I want dragon rider subclasses for all classes, to do a dragon rider themed campaign.

Fighters aren’t allowed anything to fight good.

    D&D 5E (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

Not really my sort of thing, but if you have anything based on Forth Wing (the sex more than the dragons) so I don’t have to wade through the book, then I have a player who would be interested. Edit: it’s just occurred to me that I might be able to repurpose Stryxhaven. Wouldn’t get me out of...

    D&D 5E (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

You can write “there is no plot” in a couple of seconds, you wouldn’t need an afternoon.

Worlds of Design: In the Shadow of Tolkien

Maybe that is the origin of the Scottish dwarf trope? It’s a reference to hair colour, and it’s a colour often associated with Scottish and Irish (and it’s well known that Americans can’t tell those accents apart). I Don’t think there are any red haired dwarves in Tolkien. But I think there is...

Purple Dragon Knight Retooled as Banneret in D&D's Heroes of Faerun Book

Maybe we will get the real PDK with the pet in one of the DLCs. One based on Forth Wing if WotC have any commercial sense. Since the people who hate lore change are generally the same people as hate digital content, there won’t be anything to complain about, will there?

    WAR OF THE WORLDS Trailer

So thousands of people have watched it, making it a hit, so we will see more similar stuff.

    D&D 5E (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

I can consistently turn out adventures that are a lot better than KotB, or LMoP for that matter. What I can’t always do is come up with interesting ideas that surprise my players. I’ve never come across a published adventure that I could run without giving it a thorough going over, if only to...

    D&D 5E (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

Yeah, but why would you spend good money on something so simplistic? If I’m going to buy an adventure, it needs to be something I couldn’t have come up with myself! This starter set, sure, you are paying for the accessories.

    D&D 5E (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

Because it's a good example of "how to put together a very basic D&D adventure" for 12 year old newbies. Which is what it was written for in the first place. They couldn't resist the urge to clean up some of the most glaring illogicalities though. They even give the humanoids motivation! So...

    D&D 5E (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

There were some great classic adventures. But Keep on the Boarderlands was not amongst them. Its just BLINDINGLY OBVIOUS. It took no skill to write whatsoever. And it is full of nonsensical stuff - the NPCs are all ridiculously high level, and have no need of the pathetic PCs. The caves are far...

They don’t read it. To employ people to read through and analyse all the text responses would be much much more expensive than looking at the basic numbers.

    D&D 5E (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

Or you could just write it yourself. You don’t need a professional writer if you like your D&D bare bones simplistic.

    D&D 5E (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

Any 12 year old could write it in an afternoon. Professional writers don’t get paid for doing that.

Worlds of Design: In the Shadow of Tolkien

BBC did pretty much the same for British regional accents at around the same time, and is pretty much responsible for how Americans think the British speak. The BBC still has a habit of subtitling Scottish accents.
