    D&D 5E (2014) You can't necessarily go back

Wait. You are moving the goalposts dramatically here. Your statement to which I responded was that "videogames have nothing to offer tapbletop RPGs." (emphasis added.) now, you have shifted that to "the majority of videogame mechanics." Which statement would you like me to discuss, because...

    D&D 5E (2014) You can't necessarily go back

Armchair game designers say that videogames have nothing to offer RPGs. A real game designer does not allow the source to determine whether a potential innovation is good or bad.

Future of D&D Keynote Speech [UPDATE - with video!]

I *suspect* that they want to keep them alive, and they will be kept alive as long as it makes financial sense for them to keep them alive. You also have to consider whether or not they will be able to support both sets of tools (4E, Next) with the same techs.

Future of D&D Keynote Speech [UPDATE - with video!]

I am sure that they have already started. And, from a tweet I saw zip through my feed yesterday, I do know that Greg Leeds has said that they want to get out some sort of digital tool set for Next, but that it is way, way too early for them to state anything beyond that. For Hasbro, maybe not...

Future of D&D Keynote Speech [UPDATE - with video!]

Given the fiasco with the GSL and the delays with getting it out to 3pps, I would be very surprised if major 3pps weren't already getting NDA'ed questions about what they would like to see in a Next OGL/GSL-type license. Especially if they manage (like I know some people at WotC are hoping for)...

Future of D&D Keynote Speech [UPDATE - with video!]

Sorry, I was unclear in my comments. When I say that we start hearing whispers at about 9-12 months, I mean that the OGL is pretty much completed and it is being sent to 3pps for comments, and that they are allowed to say that they are producing stuff under the OGL at 3-6 months out. My...

Future of D&D Keynote Speech [UPDATE - with video!]

OGL - It is way, way too early in the process for that to be considered or talked about. I would guess that we would see whispers of an OGL about 9-12 months prior to release date, and open talk between 3 and 6 months prior to the release date. DDI - I would be very, very surprised to see any...

Penny Arcade Podcast with Mike Mearls

I don't think it is that. I think that they are acting the way they because that is what they *really* feel. They are *very* passionate people about the games they play, and it surprises me not that they are asking the tough questions. Not to get a better "payoff" or "reward" when they say that...

Penny Arcade Podcast with Mike Mearls

PA has made it a point of their site that they pull no punches, and will tell exactly what they think about a game no matter how much money the company pays to advertise on it. If it sounds like they like the game, then chances are very, very good that it is legit.

Monte Cook's new RPG: Numenera [UPDATED]

Wow. This thread is proof of why RPG players get stereotyped the way that we are. This sounds like an awesome RPG, and instead of talking about how awesome it is, most of this thread is arguing over whether 1 billion years is accurate or not. sigh Personally, this looks pretty cool, and I look...

Penny Arcade Podcast with Mike Mearls

The Acquisitions Incorporated podcasts are possibly the best advertising push that WotC has ever done. They were *all* paid for all of the podcasts that they did.

    That's what I thought.

    Wandering Monsters: Orcs and Gnolls

Just a quick question - Have we seen any information indicating that these reports are what we will be getting in the monster manual, or if it is just an outline that is to be used internally??

EN World's Piratecat to moderate WotC's Gen Con Keynote Address

Think of it in a similar way to the headlining act at a music festival.

    Full Release when?

My prediction is that we will see an announcement of some sort at GenCon 2013, possibly mixed with a small release of some sort. Then, in 2014, timed to coincide with the 40th anniversary of D&D, they will open the floodgates.

    WotC's D&D Virtual Table Cancelled

There used to be an API for one of the earlier incarnations of the DDI compendium that people could use. I do not know if MP uses the API in its current configuration, or if the current Compendium still has the same API tools available. What I would like to see for the Next version of DDI is...

Pathfinder 1E Paizo announces Paizo Game Space

People will be paying for the Paizo VTT. The costs for the development will be coming from what you pay for other things from Paizo.

    WotC's D&D Virtual Table Cancelled

I would rather they just provide an API combined with a standard format for the exporting of data so that 3PPs could access the data and use it however they want. Hook in a key or something attached to the 3PP so that if it is found that they are breaking the API rules the program is disabled.

    WotC's D&D Virtual Table Cancelled

They did. Originally, they had it completely contracted out to a company called Radiant Machine. They did not provide anything useful and, from what I have been able to determine, WotC ended up scrapping everything that they did and starting over, completely in-house. That provided the...

    WotC's D&D Virtual Table Cancelled

The chance that WotC cancelled their VT because Paizo announced a VTT is 0%. I am almost 100% certain that the decision to cancel the VT was made at least a week prior to the announcement, and that the rest of the time was spent making sure that the message that was sent out was acceptable to all.
