Quick question: does the prohibition on online play affect your playtest?

It affects me. My home group has some people in it who have absolutely no desire to play anything other than 3.5, so I was planning on getting some maptools/other digital playtime in.

    D&D 5E (2014) Guidelines for D&D Next playtest/adventure discussion here at ENW

That is not the fault of WotC. That is due to (IIRC) legal precedent saying that kids under 13 cannot legally enter into contracts.

So in other words, you have no proof that WotC is doing any sort of vetting whatsoever beyond someone being able to get an email address.

    Something to remember tomorrow

Because it is a playtest, there *will* be things that you find to be broken. Also, if you haven't yet read the awesome post by Dave Chalker over on Critical Hits, I highly recommend you do so. Playtest “D&D Next” Like A Pro : Critical Hits

Now An Official WOTC tm Playtester

Two ways. The first - Send me your bank account numbers, credit card numbers, credit report, as well as any banking website userIDs, passwords and security question/answers that you have. Or, if you want to do it the official way, sign up for public playtest, download stuff and then read it.

Now An Official WOTC tm Playtester

It makes a great deal of sense to start with pregens. Pregens allows WotC to establish a baseline set of values. A sort of control group. From this they will be able to get things like: % of encounters where party victorious % of encounters where a TPK happened # of rounds to party/monster...

    D&D 5E (2014) I don't like Dragonborn: Please stay away from D&D Next.

I wonder how the results of the poll would change if the question actually reflected the topic. "Do you like Dragonborn?" will get a different response than "Do you mind if Dragonborn are a playable race in D&D Next?"

    Playtest Package Contents

In the Friends and Family portion, the DM could sign up for the group. That is not permitted in the public playtest. Each person taking part in the playtest is supposed to sign up individually.

Live D&D Next (5E) Chat with Wotc

WotC has been having problems with their notifications system today. They are working on fixing it.

D&D Next Chat Transcript (Mike Mearls & Jeremy Crawford)

What they are looking to get from this phase of the testing is a baseline of how things work. % of parties that complete the encounter in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 turns... % of parties that get TPKed in round 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... How often each spell/ability/feat/foozle gets used. How many encounters can the...

    D&D 5E (2014) The shape of DDI for 5e

Even whjen they switched, there was no indication at all that iPads (and as a result all tablets) would see the rapid market penetration that they have seen.

    D&D 5E (2014) The shape of DDI for 5e

That is true, but there were also numerous other considerations (budget, for one) that were imposed upon the DDI team by WotC/Hasbro that more than likely had a large effect on what they aimed towards. Nope. But, to plays devil's advocate, I don't think that, when they had to make the choice...

    D&D 5E (2014) The shape of DDI for 5e

The main reason for using Silverlight that I could determine, is that it required significantly less work to switch the apps from what they were using before to using Silverlight as compared to the other technologies that were available. Also, don't forget that at the time of them planning this...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E and the OGL

Because a non-insignificant part of the population of people that *would* play Next and bring it to their friends will not touch it with a 10 foot pole if there is not some sort of OGL attached to it. Now, if WotC is smart, and I think that they learned a lot from the GSL and 4E, they *will*...

Have you heard about the "Pathfinder Online Technology Demo" Kickstarter?

I wonder if this Kickstarter is an example of Paizo making a similar mistake to those occasionally made by WotC and TSR before them of thinking that the popularity in the RPG sphere would extend to the rest of the geek-o-sphere. When they first announced the MMO 6(???) months ago, I got the...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E and the OGL

To say that the existence of the OGL resulted in the appearance of Pathfinder is to ignore a number of other things that also resulted in that happening. If any one of them had not happened, it is unlikely that PFRPG would exist: 1 - GSL and the language contained within. 2 - Lateness of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E and the OGL

I think that it is highly unlikely that Next will have the OGL, or something as open. However, I think that it will have a license of some sort that will not be nearly as restrictive as the GSL was. If only because I think that there is a significant non-zero number of people who will not buy...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Next Generation

I am not ascribing to abandon the past. If my posts came off that way I apologize for writing unclear. Keep the influences of the past as they are part of what made D&D what it is. But do not be afraid to allow modern culture to influence and guide the direction of Next as well.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Next Generation

At the risk of repeating myself - DO not allow keeping in touch with the past to blind oneself to the good influences of the present.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Next Generation

Wow. I think I just outed myself. I didn't realize just how long Pern has been around. I am not saying that D&D should cater to the modern crowd, but that the possible influence of those sources should not be discounted.
