    D&D 5E (2014) The Next Generation

I think that there are two important points that need to be considered: 1 - How much influence (if any) should the past sources of inspiration for D&D have on Next? 2 - Should these sources be cast aside for more modern sources of inspiration? The influence of past sources shoudl not be...

    Concerns for the Playtest.

In the end, no matter what decisions they make, there will be people who will be convinced with a surety that only exists in children and the deluded, that because WotC didn't implement every suggestion in the email titled "Why you guys suck at designing games and how I am helping you" that the...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next weekly art column!

In the end, as Klaus said, the art needs to make sense. Also, I think that it is important to distinguish between art that is sexy and art that is sexist. The two overlap some, but it is not a perfect overlap.

Are the polls a correct measurment of what the dnd players want?

WotC is not using the polls in any scientific way at all. Like Mike said, they are simply for getting a discussion going. That is it. I am almost 100% certain that the poll questions are made up by the person writing the blog post and are, in no way, shape or form, intended to be used as a...

How the D&D Next Public Playtests Will Work

As others have mentioned, using pregens is a good way for WotC to make sure that there is a decent baseline for how hard/easy it is. When you are doing any sort of large-scale testing (of any kind) you absolutely need to start with a control group in order to get a set of baseline values...

Monte has left the building:How do you feel about the direction of the game?

Much like there is not one true, right way to play D&D, there is not one true, right set of people to be on the design team for D&D Next next to which all other groupings will make a product that sucks. There are so, so many moving parts, and the design goal is so ambitious that to simply...

D&D 5E (2014) Monte Cook Leaves WotC - No Longer working on D&D Next [updated]

I have been telling WotC for about a year ow that they need to d something for the 40th anniversary of D&D.

D&D 5E (2014) Monte Cook Leaves WotC - No Longer working on D&D Next [updated]

Comments like this always amuse the heck out of me. Despite what "the internet" thinks I can guarantee that every single one of the designers and developers at WotC love the game and do not consider it "a boring job."

    D&D 3.5 Reprints in September?

Because there are many, many people out there that have expressed the desire to give WotC $$$ in exchange for 3.5 that has been updated with the errata.

D&D 5E (2014) Monte Cook Leaves WotC - No Longer working on D&D Next [updated]

And to head things off at the pass, I fully expect WotC (and Mr. Cook) to remain professional. That means that neither one will comment on why he left. I only hope (although I may be spitting into the wind here) that this thread will also remain at such a level.

The Now Defunct Compendium Search Engine and the Evil Wizards

Heck, I know some places where a web-program was brought down because their live servers were newer and faster than their testing environment. It worked perfectly in the test environment, but on the live servers, because they were faster, there were all sorts of problems that came about.

Ahh, if only things were that black and white.

The Now Defunct Compendium Search Engine and the Evil Wizards

WotC is aware of it and is working on fixing the Compendium.

    New Staff Blog: Run Away!

While that is a great idea, it also adds a lot of times that the DM has to remember to check morale and it is likely to be tossed aside as more trouble that it is worth.

    D&D 5E (2014) To Anyone Writing 5E Material

Having the person who wrote it also playtest (or edit) it is possibly the worst thing that could happen. They already know how things are supposed to end up, so they will automatically fill in the blanks that are missing without even realizing that they are doing it.

    Handling Cheating

The DM can cheat all the time. However, as mentioned above, D&D is a game where, under certain circumstances, the DM is encouraged to cheat by breaking the rules (fudge a roll, fudge HP, etc) in order to avoid a negative result or to make the game more fun. I think that the problem here is...

The Future of D&D Seminar - Full Video from PAX East

Having it set up to be run shorter means I can do things at work at lunchtimes. Evenings and weekends are too full of wife/family/house stuff for me to be able to reliably plan anything more often than once every other month or so.

    DnD Podcast April 13

I got the impression from the podcast that, to take spellcasting for an example, that the core would be Vancan spellcasting but that there would be a module (AEDU powers) that would overwrite that part of the base system for those that desired it.

    New Staff Blog: Run Away!

Just a partial quote, as I have to go get my daughter from daycare. They also provide some math and a picture.
