Something Old, something New, something Borrowed, something blew...

This is awesome. SOOOO many links to pass on to WotC this week. Old - Fast character creation. If you want pick up and play for new people, telling them that they need to read these three books to be on the same power level as people who have been playing for a while is not a good thing to...

D&D 5E (2014) Dear 5e design team: Please research earlier editions

Given the incredibly large number of parts that interact with each other, it is a testament to the skill of the designers how few combinations are *completely* broken.

D&D 5E (2014) Dear 5e design team: Please research earlier editions

I think that it is quite common for companies which compete in a field to not allow their employees to sign an NDA for a competing company for a competing product.

Why Games Workshop is not a good business

The store here in Ottawa (back when it was open) was similar. Very large, brightly lit and when I wandered into it (being all of about 16 and not knowing *anything* about GW, back around 1994), walked out with an invite to the newbie day in two weeks, and about 20 pages of "What is Warhammer?"...

    The WotC Polls

I can guarantee that the staff at WotC are reading the threads about the polls and the columns. WotC knows that, as much experience as they have, the eyes of hundreds (and hundreds) Of The Rock's Fans....Ooops, wrong line...The eyes of hundreds (thousands) of posters looking at it and discussing...

    The WotC Polls

The polls have little or nothing to do with the accurate collection of data. They are there to give the developers a general idea of where the opinion of a specific portion of a specific community feels, as well as, and this is the primary purpose of the polls, to generate discussion.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next is a crappy name.

WotC made it clear to those that it could reach that they would appreciate it if we would not call it D&D 5E. Primarily because they have no idea yet what the actual name of the next edition will be. Then a poster started using, as you mentioned above, #DNDNext on twitter (ampersands break...

    Help with homebrew boss: Mikal

I am tired, and this may not make a whole lot of sense, so please work with me. Give him armour covered in bones of some sort. The first time he is hit with something that causes him to bleed, have him give an evil smile and shout a command word of some sort. Every time he gets hit after that...

    WotC yanks the rug out

I'm sorry. I just have a real hard time getting worked up (much less all-caps worked up) over a specialty, small-print-run book being pushed back 3 months.

    Dear WotC: Be Blizzard

To be honest, Blizzard brings in so much money (probably somewhere around $100,000,000 a month), that Vivendi Universal probably really doesn't want to disturb the ecosystem that is their own personal printing press.

    Dear WotC: Be Blizzard

Also note that the formatting of the errata documents for WotC are done in a way that they will get a much, much larger page count. The Paizo document gives the change only. The WotC documents reprint the entire entry with the new change. That makes them much, much longer. The power format of...

D&D 5E (2014) Hope for an open GSL?

D&D Next is, by most guesses, about 17 months out. While it would be nice to expect them to have any sort of announced plans on licensing, it is somewhat unrealistic IMO. If we see any sort of deal, I expect it to come out in about 12 months.

    Any news on playtesting?

How does not announcing the start date of the public playtest equate to going back to 3.X??

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E and Backwards Compatibility

I think that D&D Next will have very little backwards compatibility. What it will have is the ability to allow people to play a similar style to previous editions.

    Something Awful leak.

The main problem I have with that is that with the way that you build monsters in 3.5 is a sense of entitlement by many (not all, but many) players that if a monster does something, that they can do something as well. That is not to mention the idea that in order to make someone a master...

WotC Seeks Unity with a New Edition

It's not just how well (or not well) the game did that you need to take into account. You also need to look at the RPG environment. The explosion of pdf bookstores as well as the emergence of Pathfinder (not to mention Dresden Files and Warhammer 3.0 (I think that was the edition)) onto the...

WotC Seeks Unity with a New Edition

Companies don't abandon products only because they are not doing great. They also abandon them because they think that they can do better. Obviously WotC (and Hasbro) think that D&D Next can do better than 4E did. Whether it will or not is a different question.
