    D&D Essentials Kit

For the money the Essentials Kit is a good buy-it has plenty of eye-candy with the cards and map and extra dice set, and character generation is a plus for some. The real meat is the adventure. However, the adventure is lackluster, and while most complete newcomer adventures have many elements...

D&D 5E (2014) Nobody Is Playing High Level Characters

You might want to roll the two threads together Russ since there is already some discussion going on about this article.

    D&D 5E (2014) 75% Games lvl 1-6

This is where I think 13th Age really did a fantastic job. Set a level cap of 10. 3 "tiers" (ala 4E), and pack a significant but manageable power jump as you get into each tier. Keeps players and GMs interested through all 10 levels and the high level play does not get out of hand because the...

13th Age Converting 13th Age's Eyes of the Stone Thief to D&D 5E

Not sure if you saw my post above- but there are several takes on Icons/Icon rolls and their usage outside the core rulebook (pick up the GM book!) Like Dungeon World and Fronts, I think most new to the 13A system have a tough time wrapping their head around the core book's presentation as a...

Pathfinder 2E What's the deal with 3rd party PF2E Adventure "support"??

I haven't played it (yet), either. But digging into the rules in the PF2SRD I would say not very backward compatible**. There are lots of new terms, the math is completely different, many familiar terms/procedures work in new ways/with new mechanics, etc. I wouldn't want to convert anything- too...

Question regarding Call of Cthulhu and different versions

The system has remained mainly unchanged since 2nd edition through 6th. They are more like "printings"- Some rules may been tightened up or some supplemental things added into the core book- more monsters, a new skill or three , a short story, more GM advice, more adventures, etc. But if you...

D&D 5E (2014) Those who come from earlier editions, why are you okay with 5E healing (or are you)?

Just some quotes relative to the discussion "...whether sustaining accumulative hits will otherwise affect a character is left to the discretion of the referee"- Gary Gygax-Men & Magic (OD&D Volume 1) "This melee system also hinges on the number of hit points assigned to characters. As I have...

    D&D 5E (2014) Alternate Initiative Rules

*disclaimer- I hate D&D cyclic initiative with a passion, and prescribe to either NO initiative (ala DW) or d6 for each side, high roll wins, roll each round for Old School gaming. The best cyclic initiative , IME, is the one from FFG star wars, where the characters roll, and lock in slots for...

13th Age Converting 13th Age's Eyes of the Stone Thief to D&D 5E

The design sidebars are great. Often R&J switched their views after consideration and playtesting. In addition, people who now are heavy involved in 13A, like Ash Law, Cal, Wade , and Gareth , also have their own design philosophies including their own views on things like Icon mechanics. The...

13th Age Converting 13th Age's Eyes of the Stone Thief to D&D 5E

For the first two years I did not use Icons at all and the game runs fine without them. Then I introduced a few. Lich King Rocks. My last session was in GH, and I used GH people/power groups..Rangers of the Gnarley Forest , Circle of Eight, Scarlet Brotherhood, etc. Icon Rolls are tricky-...

D&D General The Retro Edition Market

Pretty sure WOTC has already taken care of this- They reprinted 1st, 2nd, and 3.5 rules and some supplements and adventures. They also coughbutcheredcough , err...reprinted the LBBs. They have made all editions (EXCEPT for Holmes, wtf?) available on Drive Thru as PDFs including all the...

Nominate your MOST ANTICIPATED RPG of 2020

I cannot say I've heard of 90% of these games, let alone have any anticipation for anything in 2020. I am guessing TOR2 would have been it (and sweeped the category). :Sad Realization: At this point in my life I have way more games/material than opportunity/time will ever allow to run it all

D&D 5E (2014) Those who come from earlier editions, why are you okay with 5E healing (or are you)?

Since I look at Hit Points as almost entirely endurance and luck and not so much chunks of meat, I don't have much issue with it in 5e, 4e, and 13A. I do prefer 13A's term "recovery" vs. " healing". IDK why Gary ever went down the route of "hit points are not really wounds" and then named all...

D&D 5E (2014) Would you prefer warlord or psion as a new class?

I'd like to see a Psion that is unique and has it's own rules/mechanics, and is not a subclass option or just a re-skinned Vancian wizard. So I voted Psion. otherwise, neither.

13th Age Converting 13th Age's Eyes of the Stone Thief to D&D 5E

And in place of what it has shed, 13A has added plenty of new/innovative and easy to apply mechanics & ideas to bring the game forward in to the 21st Century instead of going backwards -cough ;) It's my preferred/fave version of non-T/OSR D&D. I do hope that Pelgrane follows the Troll Lord...

Pathfinder 2E What's the deal with 3rd party PF2E Adventure "support"??

Gabor Lux had pretty much completed the whole thing in 3.5 about 15 years ago, then it got shelved when Necro lost the JG license. So in a way that is true, but typically they are heavy supporters of Paizo and having available the new/shiney on release day. My understanding this is mostly...

How have you grown and/or changed as a GM over the years?

    1) I have learned to become a fan of the PC's. I was never antagonistic, even as a kid in the 70s, but I was far more the Referee/Judge back then. 2) I improv more and prep less (if possible). 3) I'm much more open to player's helping to build the world/setting (though I establish themes and a...

Pathfinder 2E What's the deal with 3rd party PF2E Adventure "support"??

I was surprised the other day to see Tegel Manor is for what FGG are calling "Classic" Pathfinder. I thought about picking it up in PF2 to run a session or three and then I could just convert on fly to my normal systems of choice afterwards. I'd just pick it up in S&W now.
