Can two forces be in conflict, both believing themselves to be good?

Reductio ad Stalin followed by a more general ad hominem. Why not go whole hog and Godwin the thread? You are more then free to exercise your right to free speech and argue that torture is a good or effective thing. You'll still be wrong. As I said, torture is evil. It shouldn't be something up...

Can two forces be in conflict, both believing themselves to be good?

Torture is ineffective because it gets you the intelligence you want, not the truth. Anyone who says otherwise either doesn't know what they are talking about or is trying to justify their or other's evil acts. Evil regimes like it not because it gets them answers, but because it gets them the...

Can two forces be in conflict, both believing themselves to be good?

People who torture are committing an evil act. No matter the circumstances, motivation, or outcome. While good might, in theory, come from an evil act, it is still an evil act. Frankly, I'm surprised and saddened we're even having this conversation on E.N. World.

    Tropes that need to die

Or one of his superiors. Or sibling. Or children. Or significant other. Or some random guy the developers threw in at the last moment who isn't connected to the story or has even appeared elsewhere in the whole damn game. Sorry, still confused by the end boss of Final Fantasy IX. ;)

How Often do your Players Backtrack?

My players almost never backtrack the way Hussar seems to be using it. They cover a lot of the same ground pretty regularly, but that has to do with going back to their home base more then actual backtracking. In my game, I think it has more to do with the fact that my 'dungeons' (really more...

    Tropes that need to die

I feel very confident in thinking that there's a lot of world building GMs here who'd like Hussar to pay our living expenses for a few months to write it for him. Some of us even do non-Tolkien worlds. ;)

Why I don't GM by the nose

Sadly, my preferred response to this would run afoul of the no politics rule, so let's just go with: That's like saying lack of oxygen does not equal asphyxia.

Why I don't GM by the nose

To be honest, I've found that understanding the inequity has made me more likely to allow the players more freedom and action and less likely to employ let alone abuse my power as a GM. Certainly seeing the exercise as adversarial will cause problems, but seeing it as adversarial is not a...

    Allow Cannibalism vs. Heavy-handed GMing

Actually, I'd recommend Toon! over Paranoia, but that may just be me. Now, to the question at hand. Aplus, I'd say that you should make this decision not based so much on GMing philosophy and more on 'parenting' concerns. Now, they're you cousins, not your kids, but the premise is still valid...

Why I don't GM by the nose

Ah, petty insults. Nonsensical ones at that. Thank you for proving my point. My statements beliefs are completely honest and sincere, and are formed from years of experience gaming and of study of the nature of power in politics and other human relationships. I reduced your comment to 'stuff'...

    Robotech RPG: Old vs. New!?!

It's certainly one of mine as well. It has some of my favorite music of any of the0r series, and maybe more importantly, it presented a far better framework for a Macross based game then the original series did. The colonization era always felt more friendly to a game then the Space Wars...

    Human Races & Peoples

Depends on what he wanted to do and my (and maybe the setting designer if that's not me) vision of the world. In general, yes if they have a good story. Well, for a few in story reasons the majority of humans are sort of a mushed together indeterminate ethnicity as we consider it. Now they...

Why I don't GM by the nose

If I had wanted to say no, I would have said no. If you"re going to misrepresent everything I've said, all but insult me and insist that what I said isn't what I said and what you said isn't what you said, then we finally have agreement. We are done here.

    Robotech RPG: Old vs. New!?!

In broad strokes (mainly combining things that are part of the same 'project') and listing the in universe dates. Macross Zero 2008. SDF Macross 2009 - 2012 (Although the first events in the series occur in 1999). SDF Macross: Do You Remember Love 2009 -2012 (Listed because canonically it's a...

Why I don't GM by the nose

You might start by responding to the rest of the paragraph and the argument there in to show me how my understanding is flawed. Pretty much all gaming tables the a traditional split of GM and Player responsibility work as I described. The GMs power derives from players choosing to allow the...

    Robotech RPG: Old vs. New!?!

Well of course Hikaru is a total badass at the start of Do You Remember Love? It's a movie made thirty years (in universe) after the events of the series about Space War I & II's greatest hero who disappeared along with the rest the Megaroad 1 colony expedition, including his wife (Misae, the...

    Tv & rpgs

Sometimes. Frankly, some shows almost are role playing scenarios by their structure already. Fringe, Firefly, Burn Notice, Leverage, Human Target, Criminal Minds and The A-Team all come instantly to mind. White Collar and Psych to a somewhat lesser degree (smaller groups of 'players').

    Robotech RPG: Old vs. New!?!

Only tangentally related... Damn you Knightfall for making me sit down to rewatch my Macross collection. Three TV series, two movies, and thre OVA series. Almost two hundred hours. Thanks, I hope you're happy with yourself. ;)

Why I don't GM by the nose

I'll try this one more time. When a table forms, the pool their agency together and transfer it to the GM. The GM controls essentially all the power at the table. The GM controls everything other the the players directly. The GM can control the players indirectly, even though he shouldn't...

Why I don't GM by the nose

Uh huh. The OP never said the statue had no meaning. Way to construct a cute dismissal of an inconvenient argument. Look closer. It's cubic zirconia of what the heck are you talking about? Uh huh. When, pray tell, did I suggest the players not control their characters? With quotes, please...
