Can somebody explain the bias against game balance?

Or my class-level based d20 game of choice, which is part of why it's my game of choice. :)

Can somebody explain the bias against game balance?

I say homogenized, you say forced through very small holes under very high pressure. Why should a Paladin be a tank? Why should a rogue be a trap remover? Why can't the Paladin be an embodiment of his faith's wrath? Or a mysterious grizzled old general who leads a village in over throwing the...

Can somebody explain the bias against game balance?

Because not everyone considers the 4e balance goal of everyone being equally competent at all things all the time desirable. A desire for everyone to shine in certain parts of the game more then others, but still be balanced on a system wide level is just as valid and more desirable for some...

    How do you award XP?

    1) No, they're not. Not in the system in question. 200 Base XP is a major reward. On par with overcoming a Dragon, Kraken, or Godzilla. (243, 182, and 230 respectively). 2) Basic addition and multiplication is too much? Last game I ran, the party earned about 1000 XP, average party level is 4...

Where do you see (or want) 5.0 to go?

All of which calls for fixing the magic system, and probably giving the fighter some more skill points, rather then make everyone be equally good at all things all the time.

Where do you see (or want) 5.0 to go?

Why is it people always think the caster isn't choosing?

    How do you award XP?

Bonus Action Die - 25 Base XP (in play this would be multiplied by adventure's threat level, which is the average party level plus a modifier representing the difficulty of the adventure, -2, 0, +1, +2, and +4 are possible values) covers roleplaying, the practical joke, and other moments of cool...

    How do you award XP?

Then XP is being assigned to the wrong objectives.

    How do you award XP?

Other: By adventure, pretty closely following the rules for my system of choice (Fantasy Craft and Spycraft 2.0). Most XP comes from meeting objectives, with some coming from overcoming (not necessarily defeating) adversaries. Only one chunk of XP per adversary type though. ie, one goblin and...

Where do you see (or want) 5.0 to go?

Fantasy Craft. Which, funnily enough, meets most of the lists presented here.

    Electronic support: Wikis

There's also WikidPad. It's sort of like notepad with a lot of build it handling for wiki like linking and organization. I found it easier to use then TiddlyWiki, it also doesn't need a internet connection, and it also (my experience) is less resource intensive and stressful on your browser.

Cancelling a session / not attending a session.

Wait, we're responsible for arguments made in other, unreferenced threads? If you're too sick to do your job as a GM or are potentially contagious, make you cancel. If you're sneezing and hacking and will ruin the night for the other players, (the GM's a player too) you should cancel, even if...

Cancelling a session / not attending a session.

This is almost inconceivably irresponsible. If you're sick with something contagious, you cancel. Your players will NOT thank you for giving them whatever you have.

Cancelling a session / not attending a session.

Two things lead me to cancel my game. Illness. People don't need to catch Peruvian death flu from me, and I'm likely not going to be able to provide an entertaining night. Work. I don't always have control of after hours calls or dispatch. Occasionally I get assigned project work, after hours...

Fantasy campaign in True20...or W&W...or what?

Note the Vancian Magic quality is not in the book, it's from a post by Alex Flagg in response to someone wanting a more Vancian magic system. It's what the link in my last post goes to. I also should mention it uses "normal" spells as opposed to seeds or verb/noun magic, but Lost Magic lets you...

Fantasy campaign in True20...or W&W...or what?

Well, if you have access, you could try Fantasy Craft with the Vancian Magic and Lost Magic qualities on. No iterative attacks, but by default everyone can make two attacks a round at full bonus if they 'full attack'. The Vancian quality basically lets you choose to be a prepared caster and...

    Deadlands: Session Atmosphere

Good chips and cards will go further then almost anything else. Part of this, for the best feel, is the unlabeled chips and cards without numbers. Some quick Googling... Chips (don't forget the gold and black ones ;)): Super Diamond 8.5g Hot Stampable : Old West Poker Supplies, Tools For The...

System that is gritty AND heroic?

Fantasy Craft. Use Hewn Limbs (makes lasting injuries more likely). Consider either Deadly Combat (increases threat ranges), Doomed Heros (automatic crits against the heros unless countered with an action die), or both. Fragile Heros (half vitality) may be a bit much. Then make liberal use of...

Can we go back to smaller books?

Actually, for a publicly traded company, constant profits are not good enough. They need ever increasing profits, increasing at ever increasing rates every quarter to keep the street happy. It's not rational, sustainable, or realistic, but that's what Wall Street demands. Not seeing the hobby...

    Pathfinder 1E Paizo re-invents Hexcrawling

Two things primarily. The center of a hex is equidistant from the centers of the surrounding hexes. Hence, no 1, 2, 1, 2 to move diagonally. The other is tradition. It's what Outdoor Survival used, it's what Traveler used, and it's been the standard in wargames since the sixties.
