Take A Look At Pathfinder 2's Revamped Magic System!

Yup. Describing a spell's effect in a single sentence is impossible. Every player of a spellcasting character will need to have the complete text available at all times. In that regards it's similar to D&D 4e. The spell block doesn't look quite as elegant to me, though. It does make the spells...

    Game Mechanics And Player Agency

No. My problem with alignment is that it serves no useful purpose; especially regarding the creation of (realistic) characters. Unfortunately, many players apparently don't realize this and assume choosing an alignment is sufficient as a description of their PC's personality. Having an...

    Game Mechanics And Player Agency

Did I mention recently that D&D's alignment system sucks? It's not a system that supports (or helps with) the creation of realistic characters. The only purpose it serves somewhat reasonably is to describe the minds and behavioral patterns of alien beings with immutable alignments (angels...

    Meet the Real James Halliday

I can mostly agree with your other points, but this is not how I recall it. In Ultima IV your task was to become the embodiment of eight virtues, thus becoming the 'Avatar'. This was far from easy since you often had to make choices that were in accordance with one of your virtues but conflicted...

Can anyone point me to an excellent, visual, article on dungeon design? (or the lost images of a certain enworld thread xD)

Now you disappoint me. Apparently 'railroad' is a loaded term and you appear to have a more restrictive view of it than I do. Regarding your example: Who says that the 17 different routes all lead to a dragon 'at the end'? I'm not even sure what 'at the end' is supposed to mean. In a non-linear...

Can anyone point me to an excellent, visual, article on dungeon design? (or the lost images of a certain enworld thread xD)

I agree that there are players who don't mind being railroaded. A few may even prefer it. It's a great way to play if you're in the mood for a beer & pretzl game and you don't want to exercise your brain. Over a hundred million people enjoy playing "Candy Crush", surely they can't all be wrong...

    Game Mechanics And Player Agency

In our current Pathfinder game my DM would simply have a court mage standing beside the duke casting a Geas on the PC party to make sure they accept his 'offer'. Yeah, it sucks.

    D&D 4E [4e] A slim(er) 4e experience through class and options cutting

I really have trouble figuring out what you consider an 'Archetype'. I don't think there are as many, e.g. all those different types of warriors could easily be condensed into one or two archetypes, imho. Almost all of the psionic classes duplicate already existing 'archetypes', imho, e.g. Psion...

Do you use timers in combat?

Given that it takes myself quite some time to resolve my combat turns, I never felt it would be a good idea to introduce timers in my games. If a player consistently takes very long to decide on what to do, I've sometimes ruled that she's taking the 'delay action' for the time being. Looking up...

The Goblin - Pathfinder 2's Newest Ancestry!

Ho hum. Definitely not for me. Playing a Pathfinder goblin is about as appealing to me as playing an insane Kuo-Toa or Derro. Creating one as an NPC ally could be fun for a session or two, though.

RPG Evolution: Do We Still Need "Race" in D&D?

Leaving the discussion about the proper term for 'race' aside, I'd prefer not to mix background and culture into it. While I don't like how complicated character creation in "The Dark Eye" ("Das Schwarze Auge") 5th edition is, there's one thing I really like about it: Each character picks a...

Pathfinder 2 Playtest Preorders, Podcasts, & "Pathfinder 1.5"

That's pretty much my first reaction. Do they really think that a metric ton of feats is a good thing?

The Journey To...North America, Part Two

Yup, that's what I learned in school, as well. However, is that actually the truth? Here's what wikipedia has to say: If you google a bit you'll find a news article from 2014 about a scientific paper on the topic. I doubt that's the final word on this, though. And even if it was, note what...

From Dogs to Dragons: Kobold Evolution

That's actually how they look(ed) in 'Das Schwarze Auge' (1e):

The Journey To...North America, Part Two

I'm not so sure about that. You do know that history is written by the winners? I suspect you may have fallen for Roman propaganda ;) The way I recall it, the Carthaginians were mostly a trade empire, built on the basis of their vastly superior ships. They founded countless harbor cities all...

    Ten basic medieval fantasy classes

You may be right. Try matching them to the different categories and you'll see! It's a different approach to come up with a full complement of classes. Surely you don't believe that D&D is the one true way? Why doesn't Earthdawn have exactly the same classes as D&D? Were the designers just...

Legion, Season 2 Trailer. Yeah baby, it is.

These are some great teasers, I have to admit! I was already interested after reading reviews about the first season, but now I'm actually rather hyped. This looks exactly like the kind of thing I enjoy watching. I have to check where I can watch it (or failing that, buy the DVDs).

    Ten basic medieval fantasy classes

Ha! That's extremely similar to an idea I once had for a new RPG system. The primary stats for each character were Physical, Mental, and Spirit, each with an Active expression and a Passive expression. (Okay, in a way that was just renaming ye olde D&D stats...) I wanted each character to cover...

    What are you listening to?

That's a great selection, Danny! I've lately been listening to the Polygondwanaland album from King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. You can even download it for free using the Bandcamp link I provided! This Australian band has been incredibly productive last year. They released no less than five...
