What are you reading? Nov 2017

I'm finally done with the four 'World of the Lone Wolf' books featuring 'Grey Star the Wizard'. While the railroading didn't get any better, I felt that the writing improved somewhat in the later parts. My main problem with the books was that there appear to be only two types of decisions...

Robot Wars: Transformers vs. Robotech vs. BattleTech

Dunno. I never cared for the standard Mechs. For me, the real fun was designing your own Mechs.

Lord of the Rings TV Show Reboot

Almost everything is 'approximately true'. And if you're a politician, everything is true (if it suits you...) ;)

Lord of the Rings TV Show Reboot

*shrug* I enjoyed the Barsoom movie. Nothing to get overly excited about, but not bad, either.

What are you reading? Nov 2017

I'm finished with the 'New Order of the Kai' books*. Somewhat surprisingly I made it to the end of 'The Hunger of Sejanoz' without failing once. That means I made it through six books without dying - yay me! Now I've turned to the remaining 'World of the Lone Wolf' books, starting with 'Grey...

Could D&D Ever Have an eSport?

I'm definitely with Mark Swanson, here: "Don’t run D&D as a tournament." The very idea runs counter to what I consider the hallmark of a roleplaying game: trying to portrait characters with personal goals and motivations, working as a team to overcome challenges while creating an interesting...

    D&D 4E Streamlined 4e combat

Well, regarding the tactical combat, we'll probably have to agree to disagree. It lacks some of the dynamic of 4e's maneuvering of course, since movement is abstract, but the system still rewards (and requires) good tactics. I have yet to see a better tactical combat system than 4e's, but it...

    Monster ENCyclopedia: Remorhaz

Yay, my guess/wish/idea came true :D Remorhaz(es) are simply cool, err, I mean, super-hot! What impressed me most about them in 1e (apart from the artwork) was how much damage they could deal just by touching you. I also really liked the idea of an ice monster that caused heat damage. Oh, and...

    Keywords vs Damage Types

Well, yes - unless the proponents of "Frostcheese" managed to find a ruling somewhere. My knowledge of 4e rules is quite rusty at this point in time... Personally, I don't like any kind of cheese in my RPGs. It's why I'm rather strict in my rule interpretations and don't allow all of the...

Ah, the irresistible lure of minis... ;) Great review, thanks!

The "L" Word (Lazy) and Armchair Quarterbacking

This very much reminds me of a project by Jan Böhmermann to demonstrate how bad (German) pop songs these days are: The lyrics for this song were created by a bunch of chimpanzees (hence the "artist's" name "Jim Pandzko"), yet still the song became really popular and some listeners said how they...

How do your PCs meet or know each other?

I think it's a bit boring if all characters share the same background. Instead, ask each player to come up with a different relationship to two other player characters. This usually creates an interesting mix of backgrounds and not all relationships are necessarily entirely positive.

    Keywords vs Damage Types

I think, unless the effect allowing you to replace a damage type with a different one or adding a damage type actually says so, it doesn't affect the power's keywords. E.g. there are powers that can have a random effect, each with a different damage type. This doesn't mean that the power loses...

    D&D 4E Streamlined 4e combat

Imho, if you're interested in a 4e-like RPG with a somewhat less involved combat system, you should have a look at 13th Age. The link's to the SRD. Here's a transcript of the key features:

What are you reading? Nov 2017

Well, you got farther than I did. I stopped reading after book 3 when I realized that the story had only been advanced a tiny bit in the very last chapter. It seemed quite clear that this series would be going nowhere fast... Has anyone ever played the Wheel of Time RPG, btw.? This was one of...

How much back story do you allow/expect at the start of the game?

Yup, Heinlein's been there and done that back in 1958...

Lord of the Rings TV Show Reboot

Sounds much more reasonable than retelling 'The Hobbit' or 'The Lord of the Rings'. And if they write their own stories rather than try to adapt what remains of Tolkien's other 'novels', it might actually be good.

Unearthed Arcana Four New Elf Subraces in Unearthed Arcana

Given that elves are just pointy-eared humans, yeah, we get plenty of human 'subraces'.
