Worlds of Design: “I Hate Dice Games”

Strangely enough, while I enjoy rolling dice in RPGs, I rather detest it in board games. However, I really like board games that offer great variability. And that's where an important distinction enters the equation: Is randomness a factor in the outcome of your actions or is it only used to...

Worlds of Design: “I Hate Dice Games”

In a discussion about randomness and chance in games it makes sense to use the term 'puzzle'. In this context, puzzles are a very specific type of game that have no source of randomness apart from the players' actions. If you choose to apply that definition to sports, then, yes, they also...

I think you posted in the wrong thread...

Do you believe we are alone in the universe?

??? That's completely wrong. Tools are used by plenty of animals: apes, otters, birds, even fish.

Today's The Last Day Of Voting For The Most Anticipated Tabletop RPGs Of 2019!

I recall that Red Brick had picked up 'Fading Suns'. They had also picked up 'Earthdawn' among several other interesting systems and released a pretty good new edition of the rules and all supplements. It's interesting that Ulisses has now picked it up. They're one of the biggest RPG publishers...

What are you reading? November 2018 edition

I finished 'The Unconsoled' by Kazuo Ishiguro today. No big surprises there. It pretty much ended as I expected. Next up is 'The Fifth Season', part one of the 'Broken Earth' trilogy by N. K. Jesimin.

Getting back into Magic: The Gathering after a loooong hiatus

Well, the first and most important difference is that you'll never have to face an unbeatable deck containing only ultra-rares. Similarly the algorithm that creates the decks will ensure you'll never end up with an unusable dud. Yes, you may end up with a deck that is slightly weaker or stronger...

Main Difficulties in Hosting Local Games (GMs)?

Don't I know about it! It's really hard to get people interested in less well known RPG systems and even harder to find a group interested in playing an entire campaign.

Getting back into Magic: The Gathering after a loooong hiatus

I've never been a fan of M:tG. Apart from being a money sink, it has many flaws that were 'corrected' in later CCGs (and LCGs). I'll play it if someone builds a deck for me or we're playing a draft, but that's about it. I am quite curious about "KeyForge: Call of the Archons", though.

What's the Best Holiday to Game? U.K. Edition

Yep, my thanks to Alan Moore for learning about Guy Fawkes! Strikes me as a cool holiday for some thematically related roleplaying, indeed!

How will your gaming-purchase habits change in 2019?

For me the biggest change this year was starting to back kickstarter campaigns. Basically it means I've already spent my entire 2019 budget for game purchases. We'll see how that's going to work out for me.

How do you manage large-scale battlemaps?

I don't. At some point when DMing 4e I switched to use one of the plenty of D&D poster maps I have in my collection (from the D&D Miniatures Game, 'Fantastic Locations' supplements and 4e adventure modules), modifying them slightly by placing a few Dungeon Tiles on top. The exception were...

    。Nonhuman fantasy civilizations question

In my 3e D&D campaign I used the Changing Breeds from oWoD's Werewolf: The Apocalypse as an inspiration for about a dozen different lycanthropic humanoid species. I ruled that like the Shifters in D&D's Eberron setting they didn't actually contract lycanthropy. Instead you had to be born as one...

A Song of Ice and Fire Tabletop Miniatures Game

So, CMON is trying to get a slice of Games Workshop's market. Color me unexcited. The reviews on BGG are pretty good so far, though. Since you're an AGoT fan and if you happen to enjoy tabletop wargames maybe you'd like it.

What would happen if you reversed all the alignments for all the creatures in the Monster manual?

Same same but different. Huh? I think you have a weird idea of angels. Imho, angels are terrifying creatures. There's a reason, the first thing they tell anyone they meet is "Do not be afraid!" Many angels, first and foremost the Archangel Michael were imagined to be warrior-like. And the...

Do you believe we are alone in the universe?

Clearly, the question is already wrong. There's no "we". I'm the only real being in existence. Everything else is just fabrications of my mind.

Do you like Warhammer FRP 4th edition?

I'd be more interested to know how it compares with 3rd edition. If I didn't dislike the setting so much, I might have bought it out of curiosity. Imho, it was a bold step by FFG.

Today's The Last Day Of Voting For The Most Anticipated Tabletop RPGs Of 2019!

Wanna take a bet? I doubt Savage Worlds will make first place. There's definitely several contenders. E.g. "Things from the Flood" raised 4,249,903 SEK, that's almost $500k, too. (It also happens to be the one I'm most looking forward to! Its predecessor "Tales from the Loop" was awesome.)

Worlds of Design: Fantasy vs. Sci-Fi Part 2

Umm, no. sci-fi ist just an abbreviation of science fiction. Even if that was the case, this doesn't make it a correct categorization. Peanuts and Cashews are not nuts, regardless what people call them.

Do You Think Encounters Should be Difficult?

Of course not! I'm also happy with the players coming up with non-combat solutions to encounters that I did expect to be combat encounters (or vice versa).
