My Game Is In Trouble :(

A girl fiend? Now that sounds interesting :D This is obviously a case of different expectations. Apart from the rules lawyer DM and the math guy, this group seems to be looking for some beer & pretzl fun, ideally of the silly kind. The adventure you've chosen doesn't seem to be a good match...

    When Conan Punched Cthulhu

Gotcha. I can definitely agree with that. 4e probably handled it best. Well, the TPKs in my campaigns also often happened in perfectly appropriate encounters. The most common reasons seemed to be bad tactical mistakes (like the group's only fighter charging ahead, out of range of the party's...

    When Conan Punched Cthulhu

I'm not sure what edition of D&D you are referring to. AD&D (1e) didn't have challenge ratings. It had 'Monster Levels', but those weren't used in encounter design, they just indicated the 'xp bracket' of a monster and on which dungeon levels it would normally reside. Notably, random encounter...

    When Conan Punched Cthulhu

That's something I often heard about, but it never actually happened in any of the games I participated in. Imho, this was only ever true of munchkin campaigns. Also: You actually have to make it to level 10 first. That was no easy feat, unless your DM was a pushover.

Coolest Monsters Introduced After the 1e Era

You're right, of course. This reminds me of another (group of) monster(s) from the 2e Spelljammer MC that I thought was really cool: the Witchlight Marauder(s):

Coolest Monsters Introduced After the 1e Era

I liked a lot of the original 2e Dark Sun monsters. It's amazing how much more interesting a monster becomes if it's intelligent and has a bunch of thematic psi powers. The 'Druj' from the Mystara setting also stood out to me: a kind of spirit animating body parts. 3e also had a bunch of...

    Best and Worst Module Adventures

'Grasp of the Emerald Claw', it's follow-up, wasn't much better. I once tried to adapt it for play in our Earthdawn group and found that after trimming it down by cutting filler encounters and removing Eberron-specific fluff, there was nothing left except 'Get the McGuffin before your...

What are you reading? Erudite Aug 2018 Edition

Yesterday I finished 'A Pale View of Hills', the first novel by Kazuo Ishiguro. It was ... interesting, I guess. I already heard he's fond of using unreliable narrators to tell his stories, but being a fan of Christopher Priest, I thought I knew what to expect. As it turned out Ishiguro is a lot...

    D&D = American + European Fantasy

IIRC, in D&D, originally, you gained xp for _spending gold_, not for gaining it. I.e. it closely resembles the Conan stories in that regard.

WTF is "cold iron", and why's it so special?

Well, I'm not sure what edition the OP was referring to, but it's clearly a question about D&D. The question was asked in 2005, i.e. when 3.5 was the current edition. Here's the quote from the SRD: So, you're right, it's about the source _and_ the forging. I'm not sure why you think the OP was...

In D&D it's definitely about forging.

What are you reading? Erudite Aug 2018 Edition

I finally found the time to start a new novel. It's Kazuo Ishiguro's 'A Pale View of Hills'. I actually bought all of his novels at the same time and decided to read them in the order they were published. I really needed a break from my usual sci-fi / fantasy fare.

Tink-Tink-Boom vs. the Death Spiral: The Damage Mechanic in RPGs

That's pretty much my take, as well. I love the D&D HP system because it allows me to play epic tactical battles (especially in 4e). But I also greatly enjoy the more realistic and thus 'gritty' systems in Ars Magica and Runequest. They result in a totally different gameplay experience. Combat...

Dragon Reflections #8 – A Whole New Multiverse

Thanks for reminding me about this! Earthdawn (and Shadowrun) have a similar concept, but afaik, neither setting ever detailed any of the outer planes. They stop at describing the astral plane.

Gale Force Nine Sign Master License for Dune ‘Games’; Modiphius Designing RPG!

Over at BGG (BoardGameGeek) it was clarified that Gale Force 9 has the license to create original, new games. It doesn't cover re-releasing the original 1979 board game. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing a board game in the vein of 'Tyrants of the Underdark' with a Dune theme. Regarding...

Plight of the New RPG: Shattered Dawn - Part 2

They match my experience quite well, though. Three players in our regular board game group are (Ex)Warhammer 40k players. Two of them still buy the Codices but stopped buying minis. Only one of them is interested in actual war games. All of them also play CCGs, though. Myself I've never been...

    Requesting idea: Magic Masks

Where? This appears to be your first post here... Anyway, you may want to have a look at the D&D 3e supplement 'Magic of Incarnum'. It featured masks that (iirc) worked exactly like you imagine them.
