D&D 5E (2014) Mike Schley's huge Faerun map updated and on Sale!

I wish you had updated it, so to speak, right from the start. I bought the map, brought it to the local print shop, printed out a large version and had it laminated. The whole process cost me about $50. But I was excited to have this beautiful map of the Sword Coast to use in my games. Since...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you use all of the P.C. races and classes from the PHB?

The PHB and other supplements just give you options. You don't have to allow all those options in the world you create and run. Or you could. It depends on your world. I run the Forgotten realms circa 1372 DR, so Dragonborn and Tieflings, and a lot of the races from Volo's Guide to Monsters, do...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you use passive insight?

Twice this week this has come up. Once in a discussion on this board, and once in a discussion with one of my players. Do you use passive insight in your game? I don't, and I'll give my reasons below, but I am genuinely curious to hear other opinions and arguments for and against. I was fairly...

    D&D 5E (2014) I Ran the Yawning Portal's Tomb of Horrors

I don't think 5e deserved the blame. There was nothing keeping the designers from making the traps Insta-kill or asst least very high damage. 5e can be very deadly at high levels if the DM sets things up right and runs the monsters well. Sent from my VS990 using Tapatalk

    D&D 5E (2014) I made a custom character tracker sheet

That's the difficult thing about making a character tracker that works for everybody: Some things are more important to some DMs than to others. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) I made a custom character tracker sheet

I wanted to make my own character tracker sheet to put onto my own custom DM screen. I wanted something that tracked passive perception as well as languages (there are a lot of different languages in my campaign), as well as the god(s) the character worships (because that's also important to my...

D&D 5E (2014) DMs, what are the most baffling and/or pointless questions your players ask?

My players are welcome to ask to roll insight whenever they want, but when they do, they tell me their modifier and I roll for them behind the screen. I usually want my players to do as much rolling themselves as they can, but this is one case where I think there's a lot of benefit to doing a...

    D&D 5E (2014) I Ran the Yawning Portal's Tomb of Horrors

I thought I saw it in there, in TFtYP. Maybe I am just projecting?

D&D 5E (2014) DMs, what are the most baffling and/or pointless questions your players ask?

That's why I specified "not in my world." I remember my great-grandparents had keyholes in their doors you could look through. But anyway, I explain to my players early on that in my world there are no keyholes you can look through, and they stop asking that question. Sent from my VS990 using...

    D&D 5E (2014) I Ran the Yawning Portal's Tomb of Horrors

Did you forget to have demons appear whenever they teleported? I didn't see you mention that. Sent from my VS990 using Tapatalk

D&D 5E (2014) DMs, what are the most baffling and/or pointless questions your players ask?

Usually when I get asked this question it is because they want to peer through the keyhole to see what's on the other side. I explain that that's not how keyholes really work in the real world, at least not in my world, and they usually get the idea and don't ask again.

D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls interview - states that they may be getting off of the 2 AP/year train.

It's what I am looking for, so I imagine it's what "some" people are looking for. I don't want a whole adventure path. I would prefer shorter modules, where I can place them within my own larger campaign anywhere I want. If you can give me 5 or 7 of them in one hardcover book, I'm all for it...

D&D 5E (2014) What's up With Durnan's Coin in Tales from the Yawning Portal?

I've come to really appreciate Tyler Jacobson's art. He's done many of the covers for the 5th edition books. On the cover of Tales from the Yawning Portal, Durnan is holding a coin, and it appears to be hot or something, as smoke is drifting up from it. Is this a little tie-in to something in...

D&D 5E (2014) I love TFtYP, but one quibble with Tamoachan sandbox trap

This is what I was missing. Thank you all for your clarification and suggestions. I like the hourglass idea. Sent from my VS990 using Tapatalk

D&D 5E (2014) I love TFtYP, but one quibble with Tamoachan sandbox trap

I'm not sure if you are agreeing with my proposed change or not, but to be clear, the characters are not limited to 10 actions the way the trap is currently written in TFtYP. It takes 10 minutes for the room to be filled with sand. That's 10 rounds per minute, so that's 100 rounds, hence, 100...

D&D 5E (2014) I love TFtYP, but one quibble with Tamoachan sandbox trap

Still way too much time. Can you imagine spending 100 rounds on any trap in 5th edition? (That would be like the entire play session.) Can you imagine any group that would not be able to find a way out of the box before 100 rounds pass? They'd have to decide to take a nap in the box for awhile...

    D&D 5E (2014) Misty Step in manacles?

If the DM is being that obtuse, well ... time to find a new DM. ;)

"Dust" and "Midway" - Codenames for Upcoming D&D Hardcovers

If they go back to the original Undermountain Level 1 instead of the 4th ed Undermountain, I'm all for it. And I hope they will. In 4th edition's "Halls of Undermountain" they cut out whole sections of the dungeon (and some of the best sections, too). In the meantime, I will do my own...

D&D 5E (2014) I love TFtYP, but one quibble with Tamoachan sandbox trap

-SPOILERS ahead- I just got my copy of TFtYP the other day, and so far it's great. I even like the Tomb of Horrors, even if it is less dangerous than the original. Now, Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan holds a special place in my heart. My favorite trap from the dungeon is the sandbox trap. But...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Starter Spells; Plus UA Returning To Monthly & Sage Advice Returning

Be prepared for your 2nd- and 3rd-level players to constantly be saying, "Oh, last night before the long rest I used all my spell slots to cast elixirs, and now I hand them out to my party members." Also, your second point is valid, except in campaigns where healing potions (and/or gold) are...
