Can you be flanked by invisible opponents?

I took what Billd91 wrote to mean what the Man in the Funny Hat said, FWIW. Now I can see that it could be interpreted differently, so yeah, if the invisible flanker aren't aware of each other, no flanking.

Can you be flanked by invisible opponents?

Yes, I would concur with billd91. That makes good sense. The rogue definitely gets sneak attack if he has invisible friends along that he knows about. A fun, lethal combination for DMs is four rogues with improved invisibility. Player: Ow! Hey! WTF? DM: You see nothing. Player: I move to get...

    Magic Item Histories

Sometimes I hand the item to the player and ask what they think the backstory is. If I like it, it stays.

    Hard-Boiled Orc and Pie

I was hoping for the release of the swashbuckling supplement P'orc and I, but I guess that will wait for 2010! Hey, is Ed Greenwood doing your tiles?

The other side of the coin

I think dissecting play styles and different market segments of thinking about RPGs is old Skool. ;)

Can you railroad a willing player? (Forked from "Is World Building Necessary?")

I'd accept "creative" as more applicable wording, although he was also excellent at a number of other aspects of game play, and in fact it took several years to realize that we were on bright shiny rails. Yes.

Can you railroad a willing player? (Forked from "Is World Building Necessary?")

Leif, not always. I've been railroaded by a very talented DM who in my opinion was unwilling to allow for any possibility other than the story he wanted to craft. He even did this in other genres. Example: friends were playing in a pulp game. One of them wanted to search a sarcophagus for a...

Can you railroad a willing player? (Forked from "Is World Building Necessary?")

IMO, there is no objective definition of railroading. I certainly know it when I'm subject to it. Sometimes I'm willing to go along with it. Other times it really grates on me. I think the big difference is that I'm willing to play along with the DM picking the direction or even encouraging us...

Fantasy or sci-fi boardgames with the highest replayability?

Second (or is it third) on Roborally! Great game, with numerous expansions. What's not to like about a robot getting shoved into a pit and lasering another robot on the way down? Or making one tiny mistake on setting registers and setting off a chain of calamitous events? The original Arkham...

    Clocktower adventures?

D'oh! Of course. The very fine adventure Tale of the Mouse King by Tim and Eileen Connors includes an encounter in the Great Stross Clock.

Space 1889 to get Savage Worlds treatment

Yahoo! It was worth hanging onto that old rulebook and sourcebook then! I will indeed be picking this up. I already wanted to try SW. This is just icing on the cake.

What do you do without balance?

An interesting point, and one that seems true anecdotally. A fun game may not need balance. However, a game that focuses heavily on mechanics probably needs more balance, aka management of expectations. It's reasonable to expect that you can do some things well, some things not so well, and a...

    Clocktower adventures?

There is a famous and abandoned Clock Tower in Ptolus, from Malhavoc Press. Coincidentally (or perhaps not), he and Soren Thustrup wrote an adventure for Goodman Games called Vault of the Iron Overlord. While it's not a clock tower, the entire dungeon within rotates. Very cool stuff. I myself...

Are All Demo/Con games like this?

I agree! Even if there's only minimal suggestions on a character sheet, some guidance for personalities makes a huge difference. That said, it sounds like immersive roleplaying is more your thing than killing things and taking their stuff?

    Job advice needed

Agreed. When one is being recruited isn't a bad moment to tell one's boss. This isn't being recruited. Put it this way. If they were looking to fire people or "downsize" them, would they give you that courtesy? No. And as also said, I hope your fiance recovers.

    Battlegraph dry erase Boards!

The basing material looks like melamine. Have you had any of these in use? How do they hold up to heavy lead minis or bog honkin dice getting "plunked", nay dropped from a height, down on them?

    Expertise vs. previous editions

This is called book creep, and it's not the fault of the original designers of 3E. It happens to every company and every game. Yes, those who designed the Complete series and others could have paid more attention to "balance", but nowhere did anyone have a complete guide to the math that...
