D&D 5E (2014) On the healing options in the 5e DMG

If, as a healer, someone can't have any fun unless their role is mandatory (meaning the other players cannot have fun without them), they are probably kind of a passive-aggressive jerk, and I don't care about making the game fun for them. I've been in plenty of parties that got by without a...

    D&D 5E (2014) XP for Gold in 5E?

It occurs to me that if you are sticking with published adventures, it might be wise to stick to the XP guidelines given (or assumed) by those adventures. Also, if I were to write an adventure series, I would not give out tons of gold without also including some interesting things to spend it...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Rogueish Shenanigans!

What is your basis for this assertion? It was not even remotely true during a large chunk of the playtest. Given the amount of utility rogues enjoy, they have no business topping the damage charts as well.

D&D 5E (2014) Legendary monsters are not solo monsters

Instead of more slots, I'd prefer a rule that says that whenever a spell is completely resisted, the slot is not expended. But on the whole, I'd really rather fix this at the monster end of things.

D&D 5E (2014) Flatfooted? Or: Advantage on Surprise?

It doesn't really matter what happened before. Even if you did mistakenly give advantage for surprise in the past, just explain to them that you shouldn't have, and you're going to do it correctly from now on. It's all part of the growing pains when learning a new system.

    D&D 5E (2014) XP for Gold in 5E?

CapnZapp I have to admit, it's really hard for me to wrap my head around that kind of campaign. (Obviously!) I am not a big fan of published adventures, and world building is 100 percent integral to the D&D experience for me. But if you think this system is a worthwhile experiment, I'd be...

D&D 5E (2014) Increasing the power of spells?

Magic resistance is actually a necessary trait in high-level monsters if they are to have any chance at all of succeeding on a saving throw. By that point in his career, a spellcaster's save DC is astronomical. When your chances of success are already tiny, advantage isn't even all that helpful...

D&D 5E (2014) Legendary monsters are not solo monsters

There have been a lot of complaints and discussion about Legendary monsters, particularly the Legendary Resistance trait. The existence of Legendary Resistance should not be seen as a slap to the face of spellcasters everywhere. Instead, it should be taken as a strong hint from the designers...

    D&D 5E (2014) XP for Gold in 5E?

The default rules of the game assume they cannot spend their money on magic items. I'm not going to judge you for letting them, but it's important to keep in mind that the basic design of the game discourages it, because there are some subtle ramifications. FWIW, I am doing exactly this in my...

D&D 5E (2014) Looking for cool evil grunts

It feels like half the Monster Manual is made up of grunts. I find a good cult is always fun. Even though it's a cliché, you can always gussy up their abilities based on whatever it is they worship. How about a Far Realm theme? You've also got your myconids, bullywugs, kuo-toa, sahuagin...

    D&D 5E (2014) XP for Gold in 5E?

A couple of questions! First is about your reasons for doing this. Is it because you wanted to introduce a money sink into your campaign's economy, presumably so players won't want to spend all of their money on magic items? That's the impression I'm getting. Second, what would you do if one...

    D&D 5E (2014) diagonals

I would love to go gridless, but my players love to push boundaries. In fact, when we played 13th Age (gridless), it was extremely difficult to reign in their advantage-taking urges. Any suggestions? Should I just plan to use measuring sticks and templates? (Well, I would want to use templates...

    D&D 5E (2014) diagonals

If you are using a grid, I find that spells work best if you center them on a grid intersection (Pathfinder), not the center of a square (D&D 4e), no matter which style of diagonal measurement you go with. The spell descriptions in 5e just lend themselves to the former system a little more...

    D&D 5E (2014) Character Stat Tracker

I've honestly never met anyone in the flesh who was interested in tracking this sort of thing.

D&D 5E (2014) Retributive Strike does 800 points of damage!

Pshh ... like I'm gonna break my sweet staff just to kill Tiamat.

D&D 5E (2014) What is WotC working on now?

Maybe their future budget is contingent on the sales of the core books. If that's the case, they may not be able to commit to specific product launches until January.

Announcing the BAMFSIES - a RPG awards focused on superhero RPGS

It's because the superhero genre does not lend itself to the mechanical advancement of a character. People love superheroes, and people want to roleplay them, but when you try to make it so they can level up, it stops feeling like superheroes. But, in my experience, RPGs with no "level up"...

D&D 5E (2014) Damage on a Miss: Because otherwise Armour Class makes no sense

Say no more. Now that I'm aware of your beliefs, it's clear we don't even mean the same thing when we use the word "game." I'll not bother you any further.

D&D 5E (2014) Damage on a Miss: Because otherwise Armour Class makes no sense

This is no more a problem for DoaM than for damage in general. My personal solution is to say that a near miss with the pertinent damage type is enough to cause extra pain if the creature is vulnerable, or require less energy/fortitude/luck to fend off if the creature is resistant. Whose...
