MV: Threats to the Nentir Vale in my hands

This one was mine. I'll admit--I'm a sucker for the more generic type maps (like the King's Road map, which I use constantly). That said, as I recall it's deceptively strategic. (I miss you, DDM!).

    Final Monster Vault Preview: Penanggalan

You're not off base. There's no wrong answer. It can be flavored however you wish. The swarm was conceived as an abstraction. Need a bunch of screaming penanggalan heads flying at the characters? There it is.

    Final Monster Vault Preview: Penanggalan

I'll ask some of my horror buff pals. Sounds like a CREEPY story.

    Monster Vault: Mages of Saruun

Woot woot! I am honored. :)

    Final Monster Vault Preview: Penanggalan

Head Swarm: So... imagine a bunch of penanggalan heads screaming toward you in a cluster during the climax of the adventure. (That's the long and the short of the entire concept). It's just another option. Grimdark: All the previewed monsters that I did have included nearly every word I wrote...

    Monster Vault: Mages of Saruun

Truth? The internet was out at work, so I had to work from home where the temptation to crawl the forums was too great to resist. ;) Plus, it would be in bad taste to only show up for the monsters you really liked.

    Monster Vault: Mages of Saruun

I don't usually talk this much on forums, but I'm feeling chatty. Practical use: I plan to use the humanoid type groups for when I need to fill in an encounter with "like" creatures. My game is comprised of mostly human adversaries, so I've used the human bandits, rabble, thugs, etc, far far...

    Monster Vault: Mages of Saruun

FBA--That's pretty much the long and the short of it. (I'd have made that an XP comment, but I can't give you more XP yet either!). Something else in the picture might just grant your wish when the full stats appear... ;)

    Monster Vault: Mages of Saruun

Totally hear you, Aegeri. I know how you feel. I wish I could give you XP too, but alas I need to spread it around first. :(

    Monster Vault: Mages of Saruun

By the way, Claudio Pozas just had a golden idea for this entry. I want to play it. Claudio Pozas I loved that you called the Underdark "the deep frontier". That simple turn-of-phrase evokes images of a Wild West situation, with the Ordinator Arcanis' golden mask standing in for a sheriff's...

    Monster Vault: Mages of Saruun

That is exactly what he is saying! (Designer comment!) Not a defense (I'm satisfied with the entry), but rather an FYI for all those interested in the designer take: Indeed, the material in the entry is essentially all the info on the Mages of Saruun gathered from Thunderspire Labyrinth and a...

Hound of Ill Omen: Sound mechanics + Great Fluff = ?????

I threw in the hill clan apparition to kind of round out the entry--I didn't want to make several different kinds of hounds, just the regular kind and the alpha. I thought it might be neat to include a hint of the hill clan spirits the hounds used to serve, but didn't want to overshadow the main...

Hound of Ill Omen: Sound mechanics + Great Fluff = ?????

The file I turned in just has "Resist: insubstantial," so the way it's written in the pdf would be a clarification made by editing/development. In that case, the penanggalan should be right up your alley. ;-)

Hound of Ill Omen: Sound mechanics + Great Fluff = ?????

I'm glad you guys like it. A couple quick notes: - Credit to Chris Perkins: I wrote the original howl like a disease and Chris suggested trying to incorporate it into the creature's stat block itself, so you're seeing the result of that attempt. It's cleaner, imo. Chose the Religion skill...

    Dragon 399 - Ampersand

That is the "boggle reply-post trick," for the Boggle Interwebs Trickster. While there are more boggles to come in MVNV, I have a feeling that one didn't make the cut. ;-)

    Dragon 399 - Ampersand

Not to worry--the error only seems to appear on the web article and not in the final paginated version. The power's effect is actually: "Effect: The boggle uses dimension claw twice."

You are correct! (I thought it would be annoyingly fun). :p

April and Beyond: Actually full of things most people will like!

It's like: the tower is alive. It can be as large or small as you wish. You can put as many nasty traps (or mimics!) inside it as you like. (To my mind, it's the mother that spawns other mimics that live there and feast on those it tricks--that's sort of how they work in MM3.) The core is a...

April and Beyond: Actually full of things most people will like!

The mirror mimic came about because I am an idiot. I didn't quite understand the monster groupings concept at first and I turned in a MM3 impersonator mimic with the Wandering Tower, to be used with/inside it. Jeremy said, "Hey this is the same monster as the one in MM3." I said, "Uh... I...

April and Beyond: Actually full of things most people will like!

Yes. Only part that wasn't mine was the dwarf story--but I really like that it's connected by that recurring line. Jeremy Crawford is the one to thank for having me re-concept and improve some of the mechanics; the mirror mimic came out of that revision. :-)
