April and Beyond: Actually full of things most people will like!

We could talk about this elsewhere, Ian, but hey we're both here now. ;) The Wandering Tower was a callback to the Shy Tower from 2e's Return to the Keep on the Borderlands. I assume Chris Perkins assigned me that one because I enjoy working with, and feeding mimics (see MM3). About six...

    Magazine Survey from WotC

I think Rob sold his soul to the devil in exchange for the ability to write like the wind. It's also his job-job, whereas I am a menial 9-5'er. Ever since my boss pointed out that I can check every web site I read in Google Reader from my Gmail (effectively streamlining my non-work work...

    D&D "Flavors..."

All I have to say is that the Ravenloft boxed set had such great advice on running gothic horror (and by extension storytelling in general) that it flavored everything I did from then on in any campaign. I still occasionally go back to it and read the advice therein. Those 2e green books...

    Ecology of The Scarecrow

I really wanted to do it, but promised I wouldn't go over 6k words. The final was exactly 6k words without a byline or bio. Still... yeah. Epic tier wicker man was what I had in mind. Heh, I'd probably give it some kind of power where it came with a bunch of minions inside that get burned...

    Ecology of The Scarecrow

Dude, that's an awesome idea. Unfortunately I've hit ENWorld's Scribble XP limitation. So here it is in writing. Woot!

    Ecology of The Scarecrow

Thanks, Scribble!!! I didn't do the MM3 scarecrow, and I wish I knew who did. It could have been another freelancer or a WotC designer. And I think you're spot on about the fear thing--it's been the scarecrow's schtick for time out of mind. Looking over the MM3 scarecrow, it seemed to suggest...

    Ecology of The Scarecrow

All that effort wasted ripping off Nathaniel Hawthorne and L. Frank Baum and you want to talk about some Batman funnybook? Humbug, I say! Humbug! :p

D&D Fiction in the New Yorker

I thought it was a fantastic piece of work.

    Dark Sun music?

I was thinking of including it, but I don't think you could use them "as is." You'd probably have to judiciously select your tracks and put them in a playlist, simply because the BSG albums are each far too varied to carry a consistent tone (which is a good thing if you're just listening to them...

    Dark Sun music?

Of the stuff I own, this is what I would use: 300 (should be perfect) Rome (music from the HBO series) The Passion of the Christ Gladiator Conan the Barbarian Depending on the story I was telling, I may or may not include Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Might also use the Planescape: Torment...

Oh, hey. Updated Balor in Demonomicon

Credit where it's due, Brian R. James is a sacred vault of D&D lore. His knowledge and reverence for the most minute details is beyond impressive. Combined with Mike Mearls's fondness for 1st Ed, this book is packed with oldschool.

Demonomicon, ToH, Orcs of Stonefang Pass and Vor Rukoth in hand

These exact circumstances happened to me in a playwriting class in college.

Is there a DM tool for organizing my thoughts?

I'm going to check out that neat-o Masterplan. I use the Mac-based Scrivener program whenever I'm designing something. With Scrivener you can import as many documents as you want and organize them under various folders, which form a menu for the project on the left side of the screen. For...

    Oublivae

A few more words: The first time I run anything in the Barrens, I want to take elements from the upcoming Gamma World set and mix them in! Technology + Froghemoths + the Abyss = MADNESS!!! mu-ha-haaaa!

    General Monster Manual 3 Thread

Thanks, man! In the campaign we were playing one of the PCs was a gypsy sea rat. I wasn't sure if we'd continue the campaign into the paragon tier, but thought that the kraken would make a great BBEG toward the conclusion of a heroic tier campaign. Unrelated, I read the Verbeeg entry on the...

    General Monster Manual 3 Thread

I did the stat blocks for all my monsters and created all of their abilities and powers, but unfortunately I don't have any non-NDA-protected insight on the new formulae or tables for monster damage. Thank God for the new stat block, though. In retrospect I'd been a little terrified of trying...

    General Monster Manual 3 Thread

Oh, not at all! I'd seen one or two other posts here and elsewhere from folks who very much disliked the In Combat text, and others who seemed confused or conflicted about the purpose or direction of the er... fluff. I can't speak for all the designers, but I can at least clarify my own...

    General Monster Manual 3 Thread

The real key to understanding how the MM3 monster entries were written lies in this DDI article, for those with access. Regarding the In Combat section, this is the essence of it: Mike Mearls: The tactics section has transformed into the “… in Combat” section to give writers more flexibility...

    Someone has MM3 at RPG.Net

You guys are seriously making my day--I'm totally thrilled that people like the banderhobb (and are being swallowed by them on a regular basis!). As for me, I may de-level them a bit, but perhaps not. I'm used to using them (in 2e and 3e) around 5th-8th level, but now that I'm no longer afraid...

    Someone has MM3 at RPG.Net

Thanks for the shout out, Z! @ Herschel: I was hoping that would be the case. I rambled about banderhobbs a little here, in case there's interest. Rambled about the nymphs, kraken, and yeti too, but will probably just post links to the WotC site for the mimic and catoblepas (this chat may be...
