    Adamantine in 4th ed??

Tome of Treasures (or whatever it is supposed to be called) should update a lot of things, hopefully. I really like special materials, so I hope they get good treatment. A suggestion for adamantine weapons, ignore resistances. For armor, grant resist weapons.

    Wondering waht other DMs do...

Use an appropriate "knowledge" skill to identify them. A successful roll tells you if the creature is standard, elite, solo, or a minion, along with whatever information is normally granted. The other way is allow them to notice equipment or visual differences and let the players discern for...

    Ranger Paragon Paths and multiclassing

By the current reading of the rules, you are correct, a character that took the ranger multiclass cannot qualify for ranger paragon classes. However, as a DM, you are within your rights to throw out that requirement and substitute something appropriate. Perhaps it is a simple as making the...

    Forgotten Realms vs. Eberron

Forgotten Realms has advanced the storyline approximately 100 years since the last book. The last few paragraphs of Grand History of the Realms and a few articles on the Wizards site allude to the changes.

    Resistance Types

I am not sure if there is an exact listing... acid, cold, fire, force, lightning, necrotic, poison, psychic, radiant, thunder, weapon/normal. Look in the MM glossary for entries that says "type of damage" in the description. Other power or effect keywords you might consider are: blind, charm...

    Switching weapons

Free action to drop one weapon, free action (depending on your DM) to switch weapon hands, minor action to pick up the dropped weapon. PH 289 is your best bet to justify...

Swordmages and half-orcs hit the streets!

If you have read Swordmage by Richard Baker, you can see a few of these abilities described, teleportation and magical shielding come to mind. It also includes the concept of encounter vs. daily powers. The main character sure does not act like his main ability score is Intelligence though...

Swordmages and half-orcs hit the streets!

Excellent, excellent, I plan to play a swordmage in an upcoming Forgotten Realms campaign, any information is great. Which ability score does the swordmage seem to use for its powers?

    Monsters have Second Wind?

Monsters cannot activate their healing surge (MM 7) unless otherwise stipulated in their stat block. (An example of this, see death knight [MM 50].) NPCs can use their healing surge with a second wind (DMG 187).

podcast: 4th edition combat too long

The fact that Sara Girard plays a paladin in a normal game means that she should know how to use divine challenge as her role. The fighter (forgot his name) is a designer, he even spoke about his role in combat, but in the aftermath, he said he did not even take any damage. Uh... defender...

    Using Monster's Magic Items

The item PCs get is listed under "Equipment". Unless it is listed as a magical item or with special abilities, the PCs probably just pick up a mundane item, just as if the PCs drop a weapon, their powers do not go with it. Power sources are from the creature, not the item. You would not be...

    You gain an action point

The cynic in me says that if two different people ask this question, there will be two different answers. I tend to agree with Stalker0 (first person to state that side) et al on the interpretation of archer's glory (PHB 114). If you can drop an enemy early enough, you basically have a free...

podcast: 4th edition combat too long

(Normally I would not post a rant, but with the for and against for 4th edition flying around, leaving this unspoken is bad. Forgive the somewhat harsh tone for this post, but something about the podcast irked me greatly.) I want to point out some really fundamental shortfalls in the video...

So, running a 2 person party in 4th Ed - Anyone Do it Yet?

http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=231586 This was a thread someone posted, asking about small party size games. There were some good suggestions in there as well. Hope that helps...

    Chainmail vs Scalemail

Exactly. Clerics and warlords start with proficiency in chainmail, requiring a Str 13 and Con 13 and a feat to get proficiency in scale armor. Fighters and paladins have higher armor proficiencies, everyone else is in light armor.

ranger powers and heavy thrown weapons

Be aware that this change allows a ranger to completely disregard Dex and still remain competitively effective with both ranged and melee powers. However, the change is not unreasonable and if it works in the context of your game, should not be disregarded.

Can you use skills you are not trained in?

Some skills have uses that are unavailable if you are not trained (i.e. Detect Magic under Arcana [DMG 181]), but otherwise, you can use any skill.

    Feat: Toughness

Each level, a character gains a maximum of 6 hit points (defenders), the average is 5 hit points per level. Gaining 5.5 hit points a level (10% as Surgoshan said) is a significant boost. Average hit points are 157 plus Constitution score, so 15 hit points from Toughness is not shabby.

    Scaling to small party size

Because of the expected balance between the 4 roles (and a party of 5), when you get down below 4 characters there are gaps in the party ability. Be a little more liberal (and encouraging) with potions of healing (when missing a leader), give more terrain advantages (when missing a defender)...

Help... understanding monster levels vs. XP
