You say that as though it hadn't long since already happened. It's been a story driven strip for much longer than it was ever a gag-a-day one. (Considering the first hints of the change were back in #13, and it was already in full swing by #200 or so, and here we are at #705...)

Almost certainly not; I don't see why people are trying so hard to read one into it.

The story's been much more important than the humour for quite some time now. (Not that the latter is gone; I certainly got a good groan out of the "graveyard shift" pun). The real problem is that the story gets hard to follow when it's so often something like ten days between installments.

I still think this more likely. In particular, the fifth and sixth panels are an obvious (well, obvious if you've read Start of Darkness) reference to his brother.
