Favorite System that Never Caught On

Alternity is one of those games I bought, but I had no gaming group at the time and I still want to try it out. Even though the Farthest Star thing that the Spycraft folks are supposed to be coming out with (or did it come out while I wasn't looking?) looks like great space opera, I still want...

Help me freak out my players!

He said it's play by post. They'd never know! -- so wait, how do we know he doesn't? :uhoh:

    My Beef with Social Skills

Slightly differently, Third Wizard??? Reading both of our posts, I'd say we do things the same way. Other than the fact that in my post I didn't expressly say that the DM determines when skill roll is called for, though it was, I thought implied. (Well, okay, it's legit for a player to remind...

    My Beef with Social Skills

Since the beginning of 3.x, the detractors that have annoyed me most are the ones who say that it's just a combat game for munchkins that has no role-playing rules -- and when shown these rules say that this proves their point since it replaces "role playing with roll playing", not noticing that...

how to convince people that D&D is not evil

Those folks above who say that you should hand over the book to the accusers and challenge them "the evil" are on to something, but they aren't going far enough. Even the name of this thread contains the real problem you're having here. "How to convince ..."? Baloney. If I have to have this...

4th ed -- yeah, but are you actually ready to leave behind the 3rd?

If a fourth edition comes out, I'd probably pick up the Player's Handbook out of pure curiosity. From there, I would probably either 1) decide 3.5 is now completed and use it with the knowledge that there won't be any new material for me to have to figure out if/how to incorporate it into my...

Advice for green DM facing nine players

Other than "run, run, run you fool!"? Okay, that was a joke. But you're right to ask for advice, 'cause it aint easy and some people can never run a group that large, no matter how much experience they have. Basicly, every bit of good DMing advice now goes tenfold. Though if I had one I'd...

Rules Never Prevent RPing? (But Minis Seem To Do So?)

The crux of the fireball example is this: the player(s) paid for the DM's misunderstanding. Had the mage's player made the error, the "friendly fire" arguement would be perfectly legit. Physical maps, as has been pointed out, may provide a player with more info than their character would have...

Rules Never Prevent RPing? (But Minis Seem To Do So?)

I've played the game with minis all the time, since 1979. Over three and a half editions, with all the variances in game rules and different groups people that I've played with, the little things on the table sitting in the 1 inch squares have been the only thing that's as constant as the d20...

    Portland or Seattle Areas

I'm a proud Portlander, but I have to admit I've never been to Seattle, not even to visit, so comparing them would be unfair and dishonest. Why do I love it here? Others have already mentioned the Grand Holy of Holy Temples over on west Burnside. I don't drive, so I am also glad of our...

Marshal: Who likes this class, and why?

I love the marshal I'm playing. They are an odd class in many ways, in that they are better at making the people around them better than they are at doing anything themselves; they're like the bard in that. But having two effects going at any time and being able to switch them out as the...

Who puts a sandwich in the 'fridge?

I put any sub sandwich that has oil and vinegar on it in the fridge for a while. The whole point of o&v on a sandwich is, as dannyalcatraz says, a mini-marinade. The acid in the vinegar breaks down other elements of the sammy, releasing flavor that is then convieniently suspended in the oil...

Put that Cell Phone down before I....

I hate those damned things. I don't have one, don't want one, and I will define the moment that civilization has destroyed itself as the instant I'm forced to have one. They've proliferated faster than any kind of ettiquette for their use, even the common sense /common courtesy kind. In...

Completely apart from the OP's needs, that sample of the Slavyanka stuff is really interesting. I'll have to investigate them further!

M&M 2E The War of Martian Aggression - Characters Posted! Wed. 4:00pm OPEN SPOT!

Hmmm, I'll have to keep an eye on this. I've been aching to try this game for months, but it's way to early to know if there's any chance of me making Gen Con. As much as I'd love to grab the slot, it's not something I can do just yet. Never mind somehow my brain got to thinking that this was...

Your Favorite RPG Supplement, for any Game, Period

Earlier someone mentioned DC Heroes Magic Supplement! Wow, thought I was the only one. Love that book for that game, and I really hope that if Steve Kenson ever gets around to a Mutants & Masterminds add-on dealing with mystical subjects only he will rip that book off left and right. DCH...

    Rate Tact-Tiles

I'm a Tact-tiles fan, and I also like the alternating thick and thin lines. Makes it easier to adapt to the variance of map scales, with some using 5x5 and others using 10x10 to a square. I do like the above suggestion of making them transparent, though. That would be great.

They'd revoke my D&D gamer license if they knew....

"I dislike the disconnect between the Half-Dragon template and the rarity of the dragons that can polymorph. Accordingly, dragons IMC have a magic sex ray that turns the next offspring of a given creature into a Half-Dragon." Oh, here's the germ of an idea ... dragon's auras have a strong but...
