May and December...how young is too young?

Oh, in the above, I meant to also say ... the part of my brain that says "wow" when I see Scarlet Johansen is a very old formation; older, simpler, and quicker than the part that can do math. So while she falls short of half+7 formula (for my age), it's okay to aknowledge that she looks good.

May and December...how young is too young?

I've heard the one-half-plus-seven rule before, and I suppose it's as good a rule of thumb as any ... but a rule of thumb is a rough guide, by definition. Stuff like maturity, well, you should pay attention to those issues even if you're born on the same day.

    Defining a decade with a song: 1980s

Ranger REG -- okay, if you say so. The degree of dislike I had for what was popular in the 80s turned me away from the big names; most of the musicians who are all over the media are people who I couldn't name one song from, and when I can, I don't know what it sounds like. Bet I'm not missing...

    Defining a decade with a song: 1980s

Given how much I hate the music that was popular in the 1980s, I'd say anything that's godawful is probably just fine. In that vein, I'm surprised no one's said "Careless Whisper" or "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" yet.

Give me an "edumacation" on DVD Recorders, please.

It appears you've got the info you need, but I did promise, so here's a fuller review. It's also a -R/-RW machine, and it has two mdes of recording. One is supposed to allow you to play the recorded disc on another player, but it seems, as mentioned above, that my computer is not considered to...

Give me an "edumacation" on DVD Recorders, please.

I have a Sylvania DVD recorder, model DVR90DE. The market must have something better; I have to go now, but I'll post details within a couple of days.

Have you ever searched the net on your EN World Handle?

Well, since mine is a name I created for a PC of mine, surely I was going to get nothing ... wait! Oh, cripes. Someone wrote a Red Sonja novel ("Star of Doom") that has a sorcerer named Thotas in it. I swear up and down I had no prior knowledge! Now I must resist the urge to go find said...

    London Bridge is falling down

I grew up with "Girls {or Boys; the opposite sex of the singer, of course} are made of greasy grimy gopher guts, chopped up monkey meat, concentrated chicken feet, french fried eyeballs rolled in a pot of blood. Now ain't that a dandy treat?"

Odin, Thor, and Loki are Babylonian deities!!

Arabs are included in Semites? So an anti-Semite would include Arabs in their prejudice? Now that I didn't know. I'd only heard the word "semite" in the Hebrew/Isrealite context. Thanks for the info. 'Cause, truth to tell, I've got kind of a nitpicky nature, too.

Odin, Thor, and Loki are Babylonian deities!!

Josh, you're right, I should have said "Semites" to be techniclly accurate. You're also right that it's nitpicky. :D Torm, my post was not in response to your post specificly, it was a general comment. Since I've been asked, I will lay out the bottom line of the book I mentioned. I figure...

Odin, Thor, and Loki are Babylonian deities!!

I'm going to have to join the camp of "Those ideas might be great for the plot of a game, but not to be taken seriously in real-life". The All-Father that Snorri refers to as surviving Ragnarok, for example; as pointed out, the transcriber of the myths was a Christian monk. And as a Christian...

OMG! My Mom ROCKS!!! She made my day!

My mom had amazing powers like that when I was a kid. I grew up in a small town and there wasn't much in the way of science fiction and fantasy in the stores. Twice a year, my mom had to take my little brother to Palo Alto for check ups to make sure his cancer wasn't coming back, and while in...

    Flow Charts?

The DC Heroes game put out by Mayfair a decade and a half ago used flow-charts for adventures extensively. Way too extensively. Their adventures were railroads with a couple of alternate tracks to try to hide the fact. That's because they flowcharted the plot of the adventure, though. To...

D&D possible cause in Murder case again.

As completely wrong as it was of the prosecutor to make that remark, at least he did know the suspect was a game player. Thinking that this was meaningful is indicator that he needs a refresher on the rules of inference, true 'nuff. But it's not nearly as bad as the ignorance shown by an...

Best Damned Burger In the Area?

Hmm, I used to live in the Bay Area and was in Berkeley frequently, but never heard of Fatapple's. I was a regular at Barney's Gourmet Hamburgers in Oakland, though. That's still my all time fave, especiallly the Russian Burger. Standard fixin's plus sauteed mushrooms, sour cream and chives...

When Bob wants to play a female PC

I'm going back to square one here to address the original poster's question to start with. And that question was, to paraphrase, "Am I the weird one?" Well, I think it turns out you're the minority, and if that's your definition of "weird", then you are. But I think you're asking if you're in...

    Sin City

Wow, thought I was the only one that hated "The Matrix". But I'd never lump Frank Miller's "Sin City" with it. I have "The Customer is Always Right" hanging on my frig door, stuck with magnets. I don't just want advance tickets to the movie on April 1st, I want to know when the DVD is coming out!

    Greatest Sentence of All Time?

Fenris, I may be wrong, 'cause I haven't read it in ages, but the reference to "a group of boggies" makes me guess "Bored of the Rings". As for the long quote I posted a couple of days ago, it's Tom Holt. Holt is a British author who writes humorous fantasy, so I wanted to see if he got...

    Greatest Sentence of All Time?

This is a passage I just love; I apologize for it's length, but I think it's worthy. Anybody recognize it? I'll be back in a couple of days to check, and if nobody's identified it yet, I'll provide the reference. “Across the Glittering Plains, which stretch as far as the eye can see from the...
