    How did you get started?

If comics count, there's no way for me to remember my first. Was into them well before I could read. Likewise, anything on TV with a spaceship, a monster or a guy with a sword had me entranced from an early age. First thing I bought with my own cash? Either the first of the Blish Star Trek...

    [Alternity]Anyone Still Playing?

I never did get the chance to play Alternity, but I do have most of the books. It always looked potentially great. Glad to know there's a few players out there, maybe one day I will get the chance after all ...

    Superhero RPG

Steve C, I agree with "Many people like the system, but I've found that it doesn't make for a satisfying combat. Any attack that can injure someone at all, has an all too high probability of effectively taking them out of the fight in one blow." So, if I ever run an M&M game, I'll be using the...

Ever had a player in your group throw a tantrum or worse? Most uncomfortable moment?

Mike was a dice-thrower. Not when he got angry with other players or DM; we had a pretty good group as far as that sort of thing, and we didn't have those sorts of conflicts. Mike did have a problem with the fact that his dice were subject to the full distribution predicted by laws of...

My self indulgent reason for loving issue 354

A while back, there was a thread on which one subtopic was modrons, and whether or not they were completely stupid or not. At one point, I myself tossed out the idea that, while they were much too stupid to make an appearance in my campaign, I might be able to stomach them if they were...

Confirmation cat is a threat to an average person

I'm reminded of the old "What's New" strip in which Phil and Dixie recommend various ways to simulate (and thereby better appreciate) the experiences our PCs go thru. To understand melee combats after effects, they offered the idea of duct taping a dozen cats to your naked self ... and then...

What I Learnt From Last Night's Session

This has indeed been a complaint of mine since 1e. As it stands, the mounted warrior archetype is way under supported in the rules. As for those saying past 5th level I should have something like a hippogriff, well ... that's fine for some campaigns. But there should be a "Lancelot option"...

    Disturbing Trend

I've said it a million times: the problems that everyone blames 3.x for are all things that have been around for 30 years plus.

    New "Dead Levels"

Oh, sure ... take away the underpinning of half of all Internet discourse, why doncha? ;)

What do you think of WotC's new combat encounter or "Delve" format?

I like that. The old 3 ring binder approach, especially if the holes are reinforced, might work better for NPCs than it did for monsters in 2e. Or card stock to be put in file folders. That could be handy.

Have fantasy novels gotten "better" since D&D?

As has been pointed out earlier, the success of Tolkien in the early seventies turned a small genre into a big business. Thanks to it's timing, D&D became part of that business, and part of it's success. That does indeed mean that D&D has made a mark on the fantasy we see today, at least in...

What do you think of WotC's new combat encounter or "Delve" format?

I'm with those who are arguing for a case-by-case basis. Sometimes you can do it with single page (several times in "Scourge of the Howling Horde", but I think using two anyway was okay there, the more open format is more accessible to the newbie DMs it's geared to), sometimes you need two. In...

    Dealing with powergamers

Assuming you go with a restart, you should delineate -- in writing -- what books are in and which are out. It's perfectly okay to start small, or even limit parts. You can say "Core only, plus Spell Compendium, minus the DMG's Arcane Trickster PRC". From there, allow yourself the perogative...

    Oots 419.

One of the most impressive moments in the history of the series, for me, was the moment that Miko was looking at her hands right after she killed Shojo. Despite the stick figure format, Rich masterfully yet subtley conveyed the "What have I done ...?" moment, truly some evocative storytelling...

    Mixing Races....and why DM's shouldn't allow it

Centaurs weren't half-breeds in Greek mythology, they were a race with a separate origin. And the most famous centaur, Chiron, had a unique origin of his own.

    Against the Jotuns

All the stuff about Sleipnier ... see, if I'd been a player, my interpretation would've gone a bit differently. As noted in the quote from wikipedia, the gallows was seen as a metaphoric horse for hanged men, as in dead ones. Likewise, Odin's hanging on the tree for nine days is a...

    What is your icon?

Mine's described briefly in my sig, but in fuller detail ... I posted a black-and-white picture I drew of an armored warrior on a now-lost-due-to-a-crash artwork thread. Lots of people liked it, including Sialla (praised earlier on this thread). She used photoshop to color it for me. Since...

    OotS #411

Miko's horse being now safe was one of the first things that hit me when she lost her status. Even mentioned it on another thread, so I have to admit I'm getting a kick out of Belkar's grey lining to his silver cloud.

Well, the horse is pretty much safe. It won't be answering any calls unless and until Miko makes an atonement, and that doesn't appear to be in the cards for the near future.

Wolfgang Baur's Custom Adventure #3 voting open to the public

Whizbang, I'm with ya! I've been a fan of Wolfgang Bauer's "True Ghouls" since the wrote an adventure featuring them in a pre-3e issue of Dungeon magazine. I also think his shadow-fey sound much more interesting than the drow ever were. For that reason, the Black Prince appeals as well. As...
