    Socializing at PAX East

If by some miracle I finish getting all the exhibitors squared away by a decent hour, I'll be there for a Sheraton meetup.

New Lord of the Rings RPG!

I think the system developed for Lord of the Rings Online is pretty great. They use Morale instead of Hit Points, which is much more in keeping with Tolkien. As I recall, his battles tended to include phrases such as "giving in to despair" and "losing heart". And the classes and races make...

    Adventuring party names

I'm partial to Acquisitions, Inc. (http://www.wizards.com/DnD/Article.aspx?x=dnd/4pod/20080530). I find the construct of an incorporated private military contractor company to be very suitable for a typical D&D party's activities and motivation. Also, our new group in Heinsoo's campaign...

Penny Arcade - How the Illithid Stole Lolthmas

He did deliberately mimic Dr. Seuss. Compare to The Last Christmas, which emulated Golden Books: Penny Arcade! - The Last Christmas Also, he talks a bit about writing in today's newspost: Penny Arcade - How The Illithid Stole Lolthmas, Part Two , and the writing process is the subject of last...

How we Speed up our Encounters -- what about you?

I have to admit I'm skeptical of the "one whole side goes, then the other whole side goes". With no opportunities for healing or retreating in response to attacks, it seems like it'd be way too easy to focus fire and kill single targets. There's no opportunity for clutch rescues, or reacting to...

Is D&D About Having Power Without Responsibility?

Sure they are. They have a responsibility to choose a competent delegate. If the castellan screws up, the character is responsible for the mess. "The Buck Stops Here", and all that. Responsibility flows upward until it hits the person in charge.

Rich has done it again. I too am amazed at the depth of emotion he can conjure up with those stick figures. Godspeed, O-Chul!

Help me name my Cowboys & Dragons 4e setting

"The Good, the Bad, and the Scaly" "Tomestone" "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" Oh wait, that last one is an actual movie title. Sure does fit D&D, though. :)

Trying to start a new game

My advice is to drop this group. Gaming shouldn't be a chore. Alternatively, try a Lite RPG/board game like Descent, Runebound, Warrior Knights, or anything else by Fantasy Flight Games. Fantasy Flight Games [Catalog] - Leading publisher of board, card, and roleplaying games. . This group...

Is D&D About Having Power Without Responsibility?

Short answer: no, D&D is not about having power without responsibility. Long answer: each campaign is different / each campaign determines what, for those players, D&D is "about". Alone, D&D is nothing more or less than a system for character creation, advancement, and determining success or...

My own "Dr. Horrible's sing-along blog": a musical about my D&D campaign

Belated Happy Birthday, Piratecat! And a concurring "holy cow!" to RangerWicket's point about it being a decade since I first started reading your story hour. Wow. Just wow.

WotC puts a stop to online sales of PDFs

Wrong. Simply incorrect, on technical legal as well as moral grounds. It's simple: if you've taken something of value without paying for it, you've stolen it. That's what stealing means. That said, your long rationalization for theft does have some merit to the discussion. Some percentage of...

Yes Gabe's tried it with great success. He posted about his experience here, including pics.

    DungeonaDay and d20srd.org

I'm intrigued by Dungeon-a-Day, but won't be checking it out since it's not designed for 4E. What I mean by that, is that the encounters are likely to be vs. small numbers of foes, or single big monsters. In a non-dungeon that's not a big deal--you can just convert the numbers, and add a few...

    Piracy

WotC has provided digital versions of their content, in a format that's even easier to use than mere PDFs. With all classes, feats, powers, monsters, and items readily accessible in DDI's Compendium and Character Builder tools, there's no excuse for piracy.

UPDATE: New Drizzt vid & Sword Fighting blog

I think puny Wulfgar was pretty good. The character is supposed to be young, and he's easier for the target demo (teenage boys) to identify with. That said, yeah the bit about forbidden love looked like it was intentionally awkward and corny. The fighting was better than I expected but not...

Looking for a good paladin example (TV/Movie)

Assuming you're playing 4E, any warrior whose actions are determined by total faith (faith in god, nation, or organization) will suffice. As long as the character is willing to sacrifice himself (and anything/everything else) for that faith then you're good to go--that's the kind of selfless...
