D&D 5E (2014) Moon Circle Druid Play Report

People on forums almost always have subjective opinions. Without making an objective qualifier, I can say that every single group I've met has brought the druid's wild shape up as feeling a bit off. It's a frequent topic on forums in various ways. But that's okay, because everyone's groups...

D&D 5E (2014) Moon Circle Druid Play Report

I am increasingly convinced that those playing 5E primarily through organized play are doing themselves a disservice. Which makes me sad, but every time I sit down for my OP 5E game I can't help but wish we were just playing 5E a different way instead. One reason I'd consistently rather DM it.

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG - breaking bounded accuracy already?

Exactly :) Anyhow, that ship has more than sailed, and honestly I don't think there's that much to worry about the 19 stat items. They're not my ideal, but some folks like them, and the aberrant behavior they sometimes incite is fairly restricted to Adventurer's League for secondary stats...

    D&D 5E (2014) Uncanny Dodge vs FIREBALL

Well, on the plus side, this is clearly the first edition of D&D, these issues have never come up before, so the system can be excused :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Uncanny Dodge vs FIREBALL

Easy - because the first post asks how Uncanny Dodge works, and within a couple posts there's another post that "attack" is ill defined so who knows. Which may be a pertinent bit of information in any situation _except_ when discussing Uncanny Dodge, which is quite clear that it applies to hits...

    D&D 5E (2014) Uncanny Dodge vs FIREBALL

It would be a strange world indeed if fireball did not count as an attack in general (separate from the uncanny dodge discussion), but hurling a wadded napkin (ranged attack with an improvised weapon!) did ;)

    D&D 5E (2014) Reach weapons: what's the drawback?

The primary problem I've seen with any polearm tricks is the initiative system. No matter how much you try and move into a particular tactical position, when people move past you (because they _need_ to in order to attack anything), or others stagger formation so your overlap trick doesn't...

    D&D 5E (2014) Uncanny Dodge vs FIREBALL

It does not matter whether fireball is an attack or not. It _does not hit_.

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG - breaking bounded accuracy already?

Two primary ways: 1) In Adventurer's League, you can change any game mechanic aspect of your character up to 5th level. The ideal is that you show up at a game night, pick up a pregen sheet and play it, then later go back and fix it. "Well, this is a Charismatic rogue, but I want to be an...

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG - breaking bounded accuracy already?

You're welcome to, though it's not my name. Sure there aren't two +1 rings of protection? I could've sworn we found two when I played it. I also have no idea how hard it is to find the gauntlets, but I can assure you that the group I was in found it without any metagaming. It is possible the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic Items in 5e... Lackluster?

I was quite happy that breastplate was +1 on my character who got it; otherwise it would have been lower AC than the splint mail I was wearing :) As it was, it meant I no longer had disadvantage on stealth checks and got advantage on dragon breath attacks. Which felt like a reasonable thing for...

D&D 5E (2014) What happened to the Playtest lower magic prices?

While I'm not convinced that items tend to float in the right rarity buckets*, I am okay with the concept that very rare and legendary items are rarely if ever crafted by mortals. Perhaps it came that way via a god or fey power, or only became so after it was used in a particular fashion. I'm...

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG - breaking bounded accuracy already?

They certainly might. That doesn't make it nontrivial. Coordinating treasure with other people is very easy, once you've already taken the step of figuring out where that treasure is in the first place. The conversation could go something like "I'd like to play Adventure X so I can get treasure...

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG - breaking bounded accuracy already?

For both good and ill, the random tables aren't generally how D&D works. Published adventures determine what treasures a lot of DMs have, for starters. Whether they're a set piece of the campaign or one-off, they make a big difference. For example, I sat at a table with some people whose...

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG - breaking bounded accuracy already?

There's a reason I said "Depending on the campaign". Sometimes you know you have a campaign where magic item creation will be allowed. Sometimes you even have a vague idea what treasure is in the campaign. For example, if I decide to play Adventurer's League I know I can get Gauntlets of Ogre...

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG - breaking bounded accuracy already?

Strangely enough, a 19 is a lot less of an issue than a 29, when you can get a 20 naturally.

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG - breaking bounded accuracy already?

I've seen several players pass up stat items because they weren't effective for them because they'd already invested in that stat, so they've gone to those who had not invested (ex: 8 str warlock or cleric). After all, going from 8 to 19 is a big darn deal. 18 to 19 does nothing, especially if...

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG - breaking bounded accuracy already?

The only ones that really bugged me were the belt of giantkind and shields getting enhancement bonuses (over +1). Belt because: 1) it's only one stat out of all the stats, making for class balance disparity 2) it replaces your existing stat entirely, negating expenditure of stat bumps 3) it...

    D&D 5E (2014) Uncanny Dodge vs FIREBALL

Fireball does not involve "hitting" anything, no. That requires an attack roll. It does work on scorching ray or ray of frost or any of the other spells that roll an attack roll though.

D&D 5E (2014) Analysis of "Typical" Magic Item Distribution

Agreed! I'd have been happier if they talked, but not pr(e/o)scribe, about the effects of certain magic item proliferation and also made less items raw changes to statistics, especially attack and defense. Shields didn't need to give an enhancement bonus to AC at all, and could have stopped at...
