D&D 5E (2014) Difference between critical hits and automatic hits.

In the how to resolve an attack section would be a pretty nice place for it to be, to be honest. Since it's an automatic hit _then_ it's a critical, which is just a subset that happens to deal double-ish damage. Again, hopefully we never need to know this, but it's hardly open and shut. The...

D&D 5E (2014) Forging Arcane Focus or Holy Symbol into a Weapon or Shield?

Not a bonus action, as mentioned, but their once per round messing with an item; but note that takes up their once a round messing with an item (so they're not opening a door, picking up an item, readying a wand, what have you), and that their ability to take opportunity attacks and such suffers...

D&D 5E (2014) Difference between critical hits and automatic hits.

Prior editions or not, it doesn't seem clear what happens when you "score a critical hit" that "misses" because you failed to get a high enough AC. That's the problem with the "automatic hit" being separate from the "critical" language. _Personally_, I hope that bounded accuracy means that we...

    D&D 5E (2014) Cleric-dependant parties

At low level, the cleric is kinda awful at healing anyways, so you can do perfectly fine with something else. In one group I DMed with a wizard with the Healer feat, and two clerics, the wizard did the most healing by far. Higher levels has always been a big question: once you start messing...

D&D 5E (2014) Forging Arcane Focus or Holy Symbol into a Weapon or Shield?

Well, you need a free hand to cast a spell with a somatic component, so clerics can't cast most of their spells with a weapon and shield (For two-handed it seems easy to have a hand off momentarily). Not that having your focus on your shield alleviates that problem.

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic Item design?

Which is why you should just never do that. Like a wand of magic missiles, just pretend it has 6 charges (never use the last one) and only use the 1d6+1 (max 6) magic missile castings it gives back per day.

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic Item design?

I'd suggest against magic items that increase spell save DCs. Spell save DCs already increase more than monsters save bonuses do.

    GDQ1-7 redux help!

It's a love letter to D&D, with a bunch of other story things in it. It's kinda like 5E; bits from all sorts of editions. It definitely has 4E elements in it, and 3E elements in it, yes. It was done by the lead designers of both ;) It actually has the most restricted / difficult resurrection...

    GDQ1-7 redux help!

Not really, no. Eh, that was actually a thing back then as well. You'd figure out roughly how much your party could take on, then plan around it a little bit. At least, as an adventure writer you might. DMs? Expect table variation. Like, the feast in the Hill Giant steading is way too many...

D&D 5E (2014) What do you think a psychic class should look like in 5e?

If you want to make psionics unique in the system, make it so their powers aren't guaranteed; if they have to make ability checks to accomplish their powers, that's both a throwback to 2E and an actual difference. I'd also dig psionics working more around short rests than long rests (similar to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's list the "broken" spells

I'm not entirely convinced that's true for classes other than rogue. Even for the fighter, having to use 1-2 attacks every round to knock people prone is a notable requirement on obtaining advantage.

    D&D 5E (2014) Disengage

It takes your action, and (since there's no "Tumble" skill or similar) it's one of the few appropriate ways to slip through / past blockers. It's kinda okay for it to be effective at the one thing it's intended to do.

Actually, how big is your party? Remember that champion adventurers can handle threats a level or so higher. 3 large level 6s is a totally dealable encounter for 5 level 5 PCs.

D&D 5E (2014) Humans, am I missing something? And what's up with half-elf skill bonus?

Agreed. Hence why I'd like the game to offer more feats. For this particular rogue, none of those are more interesting. Sharpshooter is most interesting, but certainly not more interesting. I'll want it sometime before, like, 19th level, though. It'd probably be my level 10 feat, unless another...

    GDQ1-7 redux help!

Well, with only a little adjustment in 13A, the following should be possible: 5th: G1 Hill Giant 6th: G2 Frost Giant 7th: G3 Fire Giant 8th-9th: D1-D3 10th: Q I may not be remembering things correctly, and maybe there's enough in D1-D3 that they're worth breaking out into 3 levels, so you'd...

D&D 5E (2014) Humans, am I missing something? And what's up with half-elf skill bonus?

Depends on the character, really. For my rogue, I'm hard pressed to find a feat to compare to +2 Dex: +1 Init, +1 AC, +1 Atk, +1 Dmg, +1 Save, +1 bunch of skills For a melee fighter type, I'll grant there are some tasty feats. That said, I'm also not sure there are more than a couple tasty...

D&D 5E (2014) Humans, am I missing something? And what's up with half-elf skill bonus?

The variant human has been the most popular race at the tables I've played and run at; it turns out people really like to have feats. Also, some people really like to have a +2 Wis and human is the only way to do it. Enough so that I wish the system actually gave out feats on a reasonable...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's list the "broken" spells

They'd have made good candidates for bonus action spells with a somewhat reduced effect. That said, it'd only mean the mage could took a non-spell action like a disengage or a cantrip. To be honest, I think Warlocks kinda do; it makes up for their highly restricted spell access. They'll need to...

D&D 5E (2014) Slow Rests: Anyone Tried It?

Yep, good objection. Personally, I kinda wish the system instead just had long and short durations, and every long you trigger longs and every short shorts, and move on. But, D&D tries really hard to pretend it can be realistic, and that magic is totally unscientific but also follows stop...
