D&D 5E (2014) What do we hope to see in the DMG?

There are a few things I suspect are givens, like diseases, traps, and magic items, but as much as possible I want it to be like the 3e Unearthed Arcana. A big book full of plug and play rules options would change it from a "Eh, someone should get this book, I'm in no hurry" to "I want this now...

D&D 5E (2014) Racial abilities that have gone by the wayside

This is already basically true: you only opportunity attack creatures you can see. Unless you want the gnome to avoid opportunity attacks while invisible even from things that can see it. Gives room to add something else, though. Could probably just put +1 to a racial appropriate stat, though.

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's list the "broken" spells

Contagion much more has the look of a "plot" spell, rather than a combat spell. Something done ahead of time on someone or snuck onto someone. I certainly hope it has a week duration for a reason, not because its effects are intended to resolve within 3 rounds or less. Either way, it's...

    D&D 5E (2014) Some spells _really_ powerful?

Given that the post he's rebutting uses "directly comparable" to "decent weapons" for "just as effective" and talks about save negates spells being "autohit", it's actually a pretty on-key rebuttal. I actually wish cantrips were more on-par with weapon use and daily spells less effective /...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's list the "broken" spells

Right. So, if right now I were afflicted with ebola, that would _really suck_... in several days. Diseases are a particular type of affliction that has an incubation period that allows spreading of that disease before the host suffers the most dire of the ill effects. Unfortunately, we don't...

D&D 5E (2014) Slow Rests: Anyone Tried It?

So, in one group there's no consequence, and in the other there are some tough choices. Cool.

D&D 5E (2014) Slow Rests: Anyone Tried It?

Except, for all that, you should actually be facing the same number of encounters per short rest and day as intended, without ridiculous contrivances to force things into one day. Trust me, I've seen more than enough contrivances in my time in D&D. Isn't it a good story if a wounded comrade...

D&D 5E (2014) Cleric Domains and Turn Undead

Yeah, I not only hate that every cleric gets turn undead, but I also hate the actual execution of the turn undead power. Oops.

D&D 5E (2014) Can you retry a failed skill check? How long?

It depends on the task, is the only real answer. You can't necessarily "re-talk" someone, as an easy example. Almost any check to determine if you possess requisite knowledge should also not logically allow a retry. One could argue that even physical skills, like picking locks, fall into that...

D&D 5E (2014) Slow Rests: Anyone Tried It?

Why? Or, more specifically, why wouldn't they already be, since that's already how they work with respect to short rests?

D&D 5E (2014) For cantrips is "level" level or class level?

They really don't. They hit like normalish or slightly substandard attacks. The example rogue certainly would rather do a normal attack with sneak attack for, say, 11d6+5 (probably plus a couple more due to magic weapon, maybe even more) instead of 4d10.

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's list the "broken" spells

Until the DMG comes out (and explains how diseases work), I'd suggest against using contagion (as a PC or monster). That gives plenty of time for an FAQ to clarify, or to find out that it's not an in-combat spell but more of a plot spell, because there are no combat effects until an incubation...

D&D 5E (2014) Hoard of the Dragon Queen for 5 Players

The biggest pressure early on is how much you can accomplish before you need to rest; it should probably work fine to run as-is until the fights seem too easy or there aren't enough of them.

D&D 5E (2014) Rogues are badass mounted combatants...

Cunning Action is awesome. If only the fighter had gotten something similar, but fightery :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's list the "broken" spells

Is it certain that contagion doesn't require 3 failed saves before the disease hindrances kick in? I don't have it in front of me, but typical disease mechanics for d20 systems would be that you are infected/afflicted with a disease, then after its incubation time suffer the full symptoms. Given...

D&D 5E (2014) Slow Rests: Anyone Tried It?

If one person runs a game where they have 4-8 encounters per long rest, with 1-3 short rests interspersed between them, while another person runs a game where they have 4-8 encounters per long rest, with 1-3 short rests interspersed between them, it doesn't really matter if the first person has...

D&D 5E (2014) Thread: Your thoughts on the 5th. Edition Player's Handbook classes?

Yep, the wizard has a ton of powers. The sorcerer in 4e was actually in a pretty solid spot though. As good or better as any of the later classes, and a far cry from the actually more painful disparities like runepriest or seeker. That was my assumption for what you were thinking, yes, and why...

D&D 5E (2014) Thread: Your thoughts on the 5th. Edition Player's Handbook classes?

This isn't a very good comparison. The wizard was an older class than the sorcerer and benefitted from receiving spells from the later essentials products (necromancer, nethermancer, witch, etc). This is incorrect. It is quite possible to build combat effective versions of both, and it is...

D&D 5E (2014) Slow Rests: Anyone Tried It?

Some campaigns also rarely have more than one encounter per day, so for those campaigns it would be a much (much) better balance for daily-using classes.

    D&D 5E (2014) Encounter XP # of Monster Multiplying

I think the real answer is that you largely ignore the rule; just keep it a little bit in the back corner of your mind when you're talking about a lot lot of things. The basic concept is fine - "If a creature has a mechanic that scales better with allies, don't throw too much at the PCs", but...
