D&D 5E (2014) Is it just me or does it look like we are getting the "must have feats" once again?

Just so we're clear, those examples don't have a choice in the matter. Well, one does. Melisandre _does_ in fact use shadow creatures and entropy curses against her enemies. In fact, she doesn't do a whole lot of fireball-y stuff at all. Most genres are about specialization. D&D is strangely...

D&D 5E (2014) Hoard of the Dragon Queen (D&D Encounters version)

Other than the Drakes (Ambush and Guard), what do you mean? I mean, I haven't really seen a better name for them, and the rest all look fairly generic.

D&D 5E (2014) Is it just me or does it look like we are getting the "must have feats" once again?

If your goal is to run in and look really dangerous, then have all the monsters try to kill you (and likely succeed), that is also my experience ;) For fighters, it also depends on the range the fights start at. Going first can often mean it's worth delaying until enemies are closer to you, for...

D&D 5E (2014) Is it just me or does it look like we are getting the "must have feats" once again?

You're still better off taking +2 to Int a couple times before Elemental Adept. And if they have any other generic spellcasting feat, probably that beforehand too. And maybe even +2 Dex or +2 Con beforehand. It's nice to have, but it's hardly must have. Or even all that good.

D&D 5E (2014) Armor as DR. Is anyone considering this?

I've tried armor as DR in a lot of systems, and I've generally come to the conclusion that it's a bad idea. Which is a real shame, but there you go. Earthdawn was the best imo, but it tended to have less attacks than D&D, you could bypass armor with a good attack roll, and damage was less...

D&D 5E (2014) Wizard with 20 CON and the Durable feat

Just think, the feat could have been a magnitude simpler if it just doubled the number of hit dice you can use for resting and would be a more solid feat for a majority of PCs (ie, without gaming the exact Con you have). On the downside, it wouldn't have spawned pages and pages of outrage and...

D&D 5E (2014) Wizard with 20 CON and the Durable feat

And that still wouldn't be broken. Maybe if it healed 1500 per hit die it'd be broken, but even then I'm not convinced. It has zero impact on an encounter, only comes up during 1-hour breaks, only really matters for 1/2 your level of them (what you get back per day), etc. It's like saying...

D&D 5E (2014) Wizard with 20 CON and the Durable feat

    15. There's also no point to him rolling. And it's also not worth banning, because it _so doesn't matter_. Especially not if he had to invest to get that 20 Con instead of through magically awesome rolled stats. If you roll stats and somehow he has a 20 Int and Con and a feat before 20th level...

Yeah, kudos to them on taking steps like that :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Moar Feats

No, the value of +1 stat is equal to +1 stat. Whether that's in point buy, feat cost, magic item, or whatever. Because you can keep adding onto things, it eventually works out. It doesn't matter if right this very second it happens to be slightly better (or worse!). Alternatively, change point...

    D&D 5E (2014) Moar Feats

Eh, feats which give out a stat point should also give out a stat point's worth of remaining feat. Otherwise they should only ever be taken as the last stat point you ever take. Which is to say, it would be bad design if feats are balanced assuming +1 to a stat is worth 3/4 of a feat, since we...

    D&D 5E (2014) Moar Feats

Thankfully, we can compare the value of feats against 2 points of ability score. It's a rather simple and solid benchmark of quality, really.

D&D 5E (2014) Ability Scores Are Different Now?

Your ability to hit matters more the greater your chance of missing (that is to say, if you needed a 3 to hit, going to a 2 is not as big a swing as going from needing a 12 to an 11). At least in terms of average damage dealt, how often your character feels successful, and consistent ability to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Removing Daily/Encounter Powers from the Fighter

For Second Wind, replace the fighter's HD with d12, then let the fighter spend a hit die to heal whenever he succeeds on a death save. For Action Surge, how about let the fighter have a bonus action to move or charge at the start of any combat he's not surprised, and get a single swing on a...

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't care about numbers...

Ah, yeah, I hit that same problem with 3E, HERO, Dragon Age, etc. Folks want a fair share of combat, but you want to avoid "boring easy encounters" so have big knockdown dragfests that can take hours. I really wish I had a magic wand that just made people faster at the combat portions of the...

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't care about numbers...

Nah, 4E was lasered in on D&D as an action movie. It was very much about the story/plot, as any well designed blockbuster might be. It _was_ an awful lot less about exploring corridors 10-ft at a time and tracking rations, for sure, but even much maligned skill challenges were actually a story...

    D&D 5E (2014) This Game is Deadly

Went through a series of encounters once where the wizard dropped in every encounter, cause no one was really trying to grab my attention other than him. Eventually they adjusted their tactics accordingly, but it did make me miss DM incentives like 4E to funnel attacks.

D&D 5E (2014) Dwarves are the best spellcasters?

Since my stat preference for wizards goes Int, Dex, Con in that order, with Str at the very bottom no matter how the others go, this fascination with dwarven wizards really feels odd. I mean, sure, at like 1st level they're special, but once you're out of apprentice tier they're a lot less...

D&D 5E (2014) The lack of "trap" choices in 5E

They could always make Resilient work like the way they did classes - one save that matters, one save that doesn't.

D&D 5E (2014) Will we see a DMG option to cap hitpoints?

Okay, thanks. It was off in one key area, an item I hope to never ever see :)
