D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss or Curse of Strahd?

Having DM'd the first 1/4 of Abyss I'd say its a difficult module to run and can feel pretty railroady in the sense that they are stuck in this long scary adventure location for a really long time. They don't really have an option to escape early. Aside from organizational issues and...

    D&D 5E (2014) An Underdark Market

There's also the Seven Pillared Hall from the 4e module Thunderspire Labrynth that might provide some inspiration. Ruled by a wizard. Minotaur Golem security force. Duergar traders. Halfling tavernkeeper.

    D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd Impressions

Death Frost Doom <MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW> . . . . . . . . . . . . . There is a big chance of releasing an army of undead and their vampire general by the end of Death Frost Doom. It might be neat to run it as if Strahd is released, then resume the campaign some years later.

    D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd Impressions

I've been wondering how cool it would be to combine this with the infamous Death Frost Doom module. It would mess with the well contained nature of the module, but still, it might work as a prequel.

    D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd Impressions

There's a few reviews but I don't see much chat about the book. So I'll talk a bit. I hadn't planned on getting the book. I've used bits and pieces from Tyranny of Dragons, gotten bogged down in Gracklestugh with Out of the Abyss and bought but never did a thing with Princes of Apocalypse...

    D&D 5E (2014) in search of a holiday adventure

I ran the "Old God's Return" tonight. Start to finish. Good length. A little linear. Could be more clever, but not bad Krampus adventure. Wintery. The christmas connection was just enough I thought, though if I ran it again I'd want to add some sort of bit about children getting lured with...

    D&D 5E (2014) in search of a holiday adventure

DCC RPG has some holiday modules. I'm checking out "THe Old God's Return." There's a new one this year but it isn't out in pdf yet.

D&D 5E (2014) Expanding out of the Abyss to level 20+

I recommend digging up those last few Dungeon Magazines with the Demogorgon AP. There are a bunch of adventures that go all the way into hell and his lair. Pretty epic stuff.

D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss: Hemeth the Duergar

He introduced the group to Captain Errde as potential contact for supplies and information. Sort of a low-level betrayal because he'd made big promises.

D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss: Gray Ghosts

I'm amongst it as well (game went on pause in the Tunnels) and I agree. The Grey Ghosts were simply caste-less Duergar who did dirty work in the city until they were recently taken over by the Savants who themselves are enthusiastic servants of Demogorgon. Perhaps there is a secret passage from...

D&D 5E (2014) [POLL] What drives your inspiration behind char gen?

I was going to choose thematic but then I realized I mostly follow the dice. Sometimes I choose a class first, but I really like using the Backgrounds, bonds, flaws system in 5e. I like it when randomness nudges me to create a character I wasn't expecting. So I guess, my other option would...

    D&D 5E (2014) Gracklstugh

Its more like, "Why stick around here instead of continuing to search the underdark for exits. I've resisted the urge to say, "So you find lootz and powerups!" :) I drew up a player map for them. It might help them make further decisions past Gracklestugh. Or it might just confuse them.

    D&D 5E (2014) Gracklstugh

Gracklestugh is indeed written by a mad derro. I think the best way to go is to allow for multiple avenues into the same find the Derro quest. ( It would be even better if there was a clear sense that he was spreading demon corruption as he went. Two-headed Demogorgon worship is heretical to...

Here's a blog that has journaled quite a bit of the module! http://www.firstsightsecondthoughts.net/?p=1145

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Hoard of the Dragon Queen" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

Denying the cult could make Tiamat weaker. Wearing a mask while fighting Tiamat might have the effect that she avoids attacking the wearer unless attacked, or provides advantage on Saves against her attacks.

    D&D 5E (2014) On the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide

Rules are easy to change around at my table. Boring pictures in the book are there forever.

    D&D 5E (2014) On the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide

I have it and its about what I expected, which is fine. I'd play a Bladesinger or a dwarf battlerager. I just really wish the art direction had been more about evoking setting than people standing. The art just doesn't have much happening. I don't understand that. Why not show pictures of...
