D&D 5E (2014) Can Tavern Brawler use cards as Improvised Weapons?

We assumed your character was a regular dude with a pack of cards and the tavern brawler feat, not Gambit.

D&D 5E (2014) New Deities Moving Into Forgotten Realms

The realms is honestly like grand central station for deities. You could pick any reason: Ao having a sleepover, the sundering, the unsundering, realms adventure tourism. Take your pick. Hell, even the native realms deities are a hodgepodge of refugees from other worlds.

D&D 5E (2014) What would you play in this party?

Depends what you like playing OP. Play that. If you don't mind "filling a role", another ranged guy probably wouldn't go amiss. Ranger or Fighter or Sun Monk pew pew. Maybe a lore bard for the extra defense-on-a-reaction and spot heals.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Beauty of Encumberance

Yeah. I basically just had a two week long argument about this with my group. Generally, I try to give them enough carrying capacity via strategically placed bags of holding that we never need to worry about this, but... they happened to sack a castle that had a huge chunk of loot. Like about a...

D&D 5E (2014) Fun, fun, fun... 'till the DM takes the T-Bird away

The CEO at a company I worked for would look at his watch on a friday and declare at 5pm "The fun can begin... now!" Which would be hilarious if he was riffing on The Office but we asked him about it once and he clearly had never heard of The Office. I really wanted it to be a brilliant troll...

D&D 5E (2014) Fun, fun, fun... 'till the DM takes the T-Bird away

I think players should play their characters within the genre and tone set for the campaign. It's not cool if someone decides to play a character completely at odds with the setting. It breaks the dramatic consistency and suspension of disbelief. I would explain the genre and tone of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) A better basics

Personally, I don't think its the classes or races that make DnD complex, its always been the mechanics (thaco, grappling, stealth) so if I was going to change anything in a "DnD Basic" book it would be that. However I also think 5e is pretty mechanically straight forward so I probably wouldn't...

    D&D 5E (2014) Illithid PC

I could see this working in a gonzo planescape campaign, since Sigil is full of enough weird races that beholder or an illithid wouldn't raise an eyebrow.

D&D 5E (2014) Called Shots: Aiming at specific body parts rule and discussion.

I'm not crazy about it but for different reasons. A readied action is already a big trade-off for most martial characters so I would leave it at that but I would make the save DC 8 + prof + ability. The half damage DC would make the range of DCs wildly variable. I would also make the condition...

    D&D 5E (2014) Non-stealth surprise

No. If they guard the King, they treat everyone as a potential hostile. When the barbarian draws his axe, the guards don't go "Oh, he's probably going to shine it up so it looks good for the king!" but they probably wouldn't attack until he does. There are other ways to gain surprise though...

    D&D 5E (2014) Historical Problems and 5E

Totally, the best defense is a good offense. Healing should be an emergency option when everything goes south. And even then, I still think its more efficient to attack even as a life cleric (unless you're roleplaying a pacifist or something).

    D&D 5E (2014) Am I insane for wanting to make a dragon a warlock?

It's only insane if you're DMing and this is your character, and he starts with an artifact, and an ancient dragon mount, and hes actually a god, and whenever the party has a fight, you say "my character ends the fight, because hes secretly a dragon and none of you guys knew!"

    D&D 5E (2014) Not dying?

Our party did this once. We thought we had a chance lol. Two of us escaped. I occasionally nudge events so PCs don't die in a non-heroic way but if they do something dumb or my dice are running hot in an encounter, there's always the chance they'll die. Out of curiosity, how do you handle...

D&D 5E (2014) What If the players lost every adventure path so far in the realms?

Yes, thats probably true but if you were one of these powers, wouldn't you put the big guns in check before you initiated your scheme? In another game, our party had determined that one of the big bads of the setting was basically trying to push the universe towards a state where absolute...

    D&D 5E (2014) Entourage: Companions at large

Noble background can get 3 retainers, knight can get a squire or something? In my last campign (4e) before it ended, the heroes had gained a title and I was about to introduce Agents. I picked up the idea from another game but basically the idea is you spend a portion of xp and gold on an NPC...

D&D 5E (2014) Scared Cow: magic Weapon & Armor plusses

It's just those lazy incompetent DMs that are the problem. Bad time management skills doing irrelevant things that don't contribute to my enjoyment of the campaign.

D&D 5E (2014) First time playing D&D and I'm the DM. Anyone feeling helpful?

As a DM, try to think logically what has happened before. Why would they be strangers? Ships of this era weren't that big and if they were on the same ship, they will have at least seen each other across the deck. For this set up, I personally would tell the players they are on a...

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Missile vs. Mirror Image

Right, so Mirror Image is basically dispelled by any damaging area of effect spell since those attacks automatically cause damage. But if that's the case, why bother with the phrase "A duplicate can be destroyed only by an attack that hits it"? Isn't that a bit redundant?
