    Abyss versus Far Realm

I'm thinking the Far Realms entities are just as incomprehensible and disturbing to demons as they are to mortals. Reminds me of a conversation from the first Discworld novel about the blatantly-Lovecraftian temple of Bel-Shamharoth:

    D&D 4E STR 'to-hit' bonus departing in 4e?

Hey, he's a perfect example: He's a giant with an inhuman Strength score, but even he turns out to be surprisingly fast in a fight*, with enough Dexterity that he's a real threat, but not so much that a Dex-focused Fighter can't get in a few hits before eventually falling to his brute power...

Loss of Innate Spellcasting (or 'How Dragons Build Lairs')

I have no idea why anyone would ever think that all dragons must have elaborate, custom-made lairs full of magical traps, or that they must create these things themselves through innate magical abilities. It seems like a pretty silly demand, and it doesn't come anywhere near the way most people...

    D&D 4E STR 'to-hit' bonus departing in 4e?

I think it's kind of odd that people are picturing fantasy warrior archetypes as strong but not agile. The classic warrior protagonists seem to be generally athletic--equally strong and agile--while a few duelist types are more agile than strong, and only more brutish characters are more strong...

    Saddest Song Ever

Oh, wow. I've been aware of "The Planets" for years, but never really looked into it. I just did now. I had no idea that "Mars, Bringer of War" was that piece. Wow. Very cool. Yeah, I definitely have to agree with your recommendation. This stuff would be great gaming music.

    When did ghouls become undead?

Yeah, I basically sprang essentially that situation on my players, with that result. I had these ghoul-like-but-entirely-alive creatures show up, and from the fact that they were in a graveyard and looked like crap warmed over, the Cleric naturally assumed they were undead. But, after the turn...

The Player's Problem with 3rd Party Products

Completely true. But doesn't the same generally go for WotC-published stuff? Of course, in those cases, there's a much better chance that the DM does own and trust the product, but the same rules are usually there. There's certainly WotC-published stuff I wouldn't allow, and third-party stuff...

D&D 4E WotC announces plans for 4e SRD and OGL

Yeah, I'd hate to see us end up in the kind of antagonistic relationship a lot of the fan community had with TSR, towards the end. Remember when people used to call them "T$R" back on that ur-Internet of BBSes and newsgroups?

D&D 4E WotC announces plans for 4e SRD and OGL

That'd be cool. A d20 Modern SRD could actually be a much more generic and logical starting point for divergent OGL games than a D&D one, anyway. Damn, I'd really love to hear what they're considering for the new d20 Modern. If they could finally get rid of the whole silly advanced classes /...

True20 -- Who has tried and it not stuck with it?

Could you elaborate on the fiddly math? I haven't played it yet myself, and I'd love to know what to watch out for if I ever get a chance to pitch it to my group. Is it the whole multi-threshold DC thing? As in, "Fail the save and this happens, but fail the save by X points, and this...

    When did ghouls become undead?

Wow, I love when that happens. I know we've got a lot of RPG professionals and people who were part of gaming history around here, but nothing beats Gary Gygax casually dropping by in a thread to answer a question we hadn't even dreamed of directing at him. This community is awesome.

D&D 4E WotC announces plans for 4e SRD and OGL

Well, if you're willing to go beyond "good faith", I hear it's kind of questionable whether pure game mechanics can be legally protected as intellectual property (but I am most definitely not an expect on the subject).

D&D 4E WotC announces plans for 4e SRD and OGL

Dang, that kind of sucks. The radically-diverged OGL products were one of the coolest things to come out of D&D 3e. I was really looking forward to seeing what kind of True20-equivalent games might evolve from 4e through the OGL. Guess I'll have to do it myself, and never show it to anyone...

    Ingredients for my Homebrew

All hobgoblins are equal, but some hobgoblins are more equal than others. Crap, that does sound interesting. Do you remember even a fragment of the title? Or a character's name?

D&D 4E 4E Halflings unrecognizable from Tolkien hobbits

I always thought those people were more inspired by V, but either way, that's a totally hilarious phenomenon to bring up. I love those nutters. Gotta admit, though, I always have thought it'd make great roleplaying game fodder. This strikes me as a very strange argument to make. What in their...

New Dragon Article: Ecology of the Fire Archon

Am I the only one who thinks these things look kind of . . . boring? I mean, they're miles better than the old bonfire-with-a-face fire elementals, but . . . I dunno. They seem a little bland. Maybe it's the cheesy-looking flame-shaped armor that's bugging me. Still, definitely an...

Why are they keeping ability scores?

Damn, what is with all these people replying without even reading the first damn post? Come on, folks. It's three sentences long and completely clear. Personally, I strongly believe there is no goddamned point in using both scores and modifiers if only the modifiers ever actually do anything...

    When did ghouls become undead?

I really prefer the rather wendigo-esque Lovecraftian ghoul: a degenerate, bestial former-human, corrupted and changed by participation in cannibalism and other unclean activities. I just think the idea of something like that lurking inside every human being's biology is extremely interesting...

    1 PC = 1 elite monster?

Have we seen anything so far that suggests the second formula? I can't really see where that one's coming from.

D&D 4E 4E Halflings unrecognizable from Tolkien hobbits

Yeah, that's been confusing me, too. I haven't seen Races & Classes, but the 4e halfling art I've seen doesn't really look like what people in this thread are describing. Actually, I really wish it did. I like dreads. I don't like the whole '70s braid thing this guy has going on.
