What setting to use as a base when players have creative powers?

That sounds badass. On a somewhat related note, I just listened to the Rolemonkeys playtest a game called Giants, in which each player adding one city and one geographical feature to a blank map is actually part of character creation. Bam. Instant personal investment and buy-in, and a whole...

    Humans as a generic race

It'd also be an entirely awesome new category of primary descriptor to add to the D&D character system. Instead of level-race-class, it could be level-race-background-class. And if backgrounds were kept mechanically simple (something on the level of Cleric domains), they'd be an easy thing for...

What do you like about D&D?

Great big gobs of flexible, hackable mechanics I can screw around with and string my own fluff on. When you really get down to it, I guess I don't like D&D so much as d20. I don't really want to run or play games about elves and dwarves fighting goblins in dungeons; I just love how a new book...

What happens when you cast a spell?

I think that's an appropriate way to look at it. The thing is, a scroll isn't just a piece of paper with a spell written on it, like a page out of a spellbook. It's a magical item in its own right, which allows a caster to effectively exceeed his or her daily casting limit. Somewhat like a...

Which Chapters of the DMG Do You Use?

I'm not running right now, but when I was, I barely looked at the DMG. I made some half-hearted use of the CR system and standard encounter rewards table, and also gave the PCs a few scrolls, but otherwise I had no need for it. I could happily run a game with the PHB alone, no problem.

    Humans as a generic race

I sure would love to see a setting where humans aren't the de rigeur middle-of-the-road race, unique only in their adaptability.

Wil fighters have a Berserker talent tree?

I'd really, really prefer to see the Fighter gain a "Berserker" talent tree and just scrap the Barbarian all together, but I think it's pretty clear at this point that WotC ain't gonna do that. Most people like classes to define roles and flavor for them. Customization perverts like me will...

is Dungeons and Dragons still Lame

I'd prefer tall elves, really. Taller than humans, in fact. I mean, maybe my opinion shouldn't count as I'm usually a major detractor of elves in general, but the standard array of fantasy races is somewhat heavy on the "shorter than humans" end. Also, making elves more alien and less pretty...

    Please call female deities 'goddesses.'

The term "lady doctor" used to be in the dictionary. It ain't any more. I don't think anyone misses it.

Clerics are a popular class for elves...Really?

    Dragonborn: Boobs or No Boobs?

Sweet Jesus, people. Are we still talking about lizard boobs?

    Multiclassing combos to try?

Oh, man. The Warlord/Warlock spelling similarity is officially starting to piss me off. Yeah, I'm really wondering if it'll continue to be a case of "X levels of class A and Y levels of class B". It might be more like "Z-level class A with the class B training feat".

D&D 4E 4E's aggressive pace: Too much, too fast?

If 4e really sounds like too much change, I think you should play a more diverse array of RPGs. Seriously, it actually doesn't sound like enough change, to me. They're sticking closer to 3e than a lot of people's houserules do.

THREE elven races, plus half-elves ... but they say gnomes have no niche?!

On behalf of science, I am offended by this statement.

    The Unified Theory of Gnomes

Said it before, I'll say it again: To give gnomes their own coherant niche, WotC needs to start thinking about alchemy. It interfaces nicely with the tinker gnome riff (which, let's face it, is the most interesting thing anybody's done with gnomes in decades) and their Artificer role in...

    Brainstorm: Tieflings and Satyrs

Do your tieflings [i]need[/u] to have horns and hooves? When the race was first introduced in 2e, they varied widely in appearance, just as demons and devils do. It seems entirely reasonable to just redesign them as something either weirder or subtler.

My, how the adventures have changed...

Looks like somebody failed to notice the frequently-referenced 4e design ethic of all characters getting to attack, every round. Hell, the freaking Cleric is going to heal people by hitting other people.

    Naruto - The campaign

I've actually been thinking about how I'd run a Naruto-inspired game, and my own preference would be to go with Mutants & Masterminds. I'd want my players to be able to create their own powers and fighting styles. Also, I'd file the serial numbers right the hell off, so I'd end up with...

D&D 4E Would you buy and play a new campaign setting for 4e?

I love seeing new campaign settings, but I pretty much only run homebrewed stuff. I might buy somebody else's setting, but only if it included some mechanics I wanted to steal.

    D&D 4E 4E Psionics

My own impulse is to combine ki and psionics for the sake of logic and to avoid overcrowding the power source list, but you do make a damned good point, there. Psychics and ki-wielding martial artists do have different fan bases, even in there's some overlap in their concepts. Combining the...
