    D&D 5E (2014) Questions from a Newb

I think there's a fair bit of fuzz to the skill and tool proficiency. In the Performance example, there's actually 3 related proficiencies when it comes to disguises: Peformance, Deception and Disguise Kits. If you wanted to you can work them all out into totally separate areas, with Deception...

Pg. 250 DMG, handlng mobs. Pretty much automates the horde's attacks, making handling them mechanically easy.

    D&D 5E (2014) Half Orc Necromancer Help

Pick up Vampiric touch as quickly as possible. With your built in Con bonus and additional damage on crits, the attack roll spell will both heal you (a lot, the spell heals you and your necromancy feature heals you) and deal some major damage. Build up a crowd of zombies as soon as possible...

    D&D 5E (2014) CR and Proficiency

Well, you don't have alter the CR. Which is what you wanted. You wanted somebody that was good at one thing without being good at a specific other thing, that being violence. EDIT: and more to the point, I did raise the proficiency bonus in that example. But only for specific things.

But what you're asking for is easy. It's just a generic bonus to doing things with the exception of attacks, saves and so on. There's nothing to stop somebody from fitting a bonus like that into a creatures prof bonus. Something like... 'Doing stuff bonus: This creature adds +x to its'...

D&D 5E (2014) Is it worth taking damage in order to do your stuff?

HP is a resource like any other. Spending it to accomplish a task is just a risk-reward calculation, not a real decision point.

    D&D 5E (2014) CR and Proficiency

Sorry, but what does this even mean? In addition, why can't that be replicated with 'Competence as the DM demands: +100,000,000, to rolls when the DM so desires'?

    D&D 5E (2014) CR and Proficiency

You can always just give it some special ability like Keen Hearing and Smell in the wolf statblock. I mean, if a bonus to some particular thing doesn't seem like it would affect CR, you really can just write 'Blacksmith: +10 bonus to smithing things' underneath anything else you have written down.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonomics and the Tontine

Has anybody else read this stuff? http://www.critical-hits.com/blog/2015/11/16/the-tontine/ http://www.critical-hits.com/blog/2015/11/24/financial-one-shots-and-short-campaign-seeds/ I'm loving it, personally. I'm thinking of starting off a campaign by having some villain bind the party...

D&D 5E (2014) Help me with ways to generate income

On a more serious note, you could probably shoot some rich people and take their stuff. They're evil aligned, right?

D&D 5E (2014) Help me with ways to generate income

Pretend to have money. Become a bank. Invest in everything. Wait 100 years.

I think the circular logic bit is intentional. It really forces monster builders to run through everything more than once, which helps undercut assumptions about the monster being built.

    D&D 5E (2014) Speeding Up Combat

They are winning the fights, so I'd say they're competitive at fighting monsters at least. Also, I did suggest letting them have a magic item to increase damage. A Maul with 2d4 psychic damage or something.

5e combat system too simple / boring?

The basic rules for combat are pretty darned simple, and it's true that some people with experience in playing more complex combat systems may get bored quickly. There's a lot of ways to solve this. You could refocus on things other than combat to get people engaged, by introducing more social...

    D&D 5E (2014) Speeding Up Combat

Huh. So even with a Vengeanceadin and and a Warlock they're not dishing out the deeps? Try giving them magic items that increase either increase attack damage or have an instant kill effect built in. Or increase the party action economy with a Horn of Valhalla.

D&D 5E (2014) [Forgotten Realms] The Wall of the Faithless

AO is too much of a non entity to be a bad guy. Sure he's in charge, but minus tossing gods out of the heavens every once in a while what has he actually done?
