    The price of things

I agree that selling for 20% is ridiculously low, but no one in their right mind would think that they could get full sale price. In the real world, if you won a brand new MP3 player that retailed in the stores for $100, you probably wouldn't be able to get a full $100 for it trying to sell it...

On getting mauled in one round

In a 3.5 game I was GMing, the low level party (3rd or 4th) was fighting some orc bandits in the woods. The apparent leader of the orcs was hanging back taking pot-shots with a mighty composite longbow. The party rogue decided he could take an archer by himself and started moving in that...

4e Monsters that scare the crap out of characters

Our GM threw wights at us, with some artillery/leader support. Losing a healing surge every time you get hit gets painful in a hurry, especially when your primary defender is low-AC/high-HP.

The Power System, Combat, and the Rest of the Game

An odd thought struck me when I read this - do you think it would work if you decoupled the use of encounter (and possibly daily) powers from which specific power is used? For example, a 7 level character knows 3 encounter attack powers (lets call them A, B, and C). Instead of restricting the...

Free Keep on the Shadowfell at Wizards.com

While this is really nice for the players, what does this mean for any FLGS that have copies sitting on the shelf?

    push -1 squares? thunderwave...

A similar situation came up in our game yesterday, the GM decided that in his game, all power side effects based on a stat modifier where a 0 or lower would completely negate the effect have an implicit minimum of one. So for example, Thunderwave with a Wisdom of 10 would push a minimum of 1...

    Program for encounter maps

I used to use AutoRealm, it has a fair number of symbols available. The only problem I used to have was trying to get the maps to print at an exact paper scale (e.g. 1"=5') could be tricky, but the release notes for the latest release indicate that they have fixed that.

Starlock: AC too low to be playable?

Does the Starlock tend to stay at range? If so, check out the Cloak of Distortion in AV. The +1 version is a L4 item, and it causes a -5 penalty to attacks made on you from more than 5 away. That would instantly put the Starlock back on par with the rest of the party.

    D&D Insider: Losing your toys

Yes, but I expect that if a large portion of the user base started subscribing for one month a year to grab all the updates and then canceling for the next 11 months, WotC would either alter the program to require regular subscription activation checks, or would discontinue the product entirely...

    D&D Insider: Losing your toys

This boils down to the whole SaaS (Software as a Service) model vs. traditional software models. Do you want to pay the recurring small subscription payments, but lose access if you cancel your sub, or do you want to pay much more up front for permanent access? In the software business...

    Ghoul Effects Question

In a game in which I'm a player, we recently encountered some ghouls, and had some confusion about the conditions they inflict. The GM made a ruling in favor of the players, but I'm not sure it was correct according to the RAW. When a ghoul hits with it's basic attack, it inflicts an...

DDI Subscribers: Are you satisfied with your subscription?

If they are storing a lot of information in the session state, I could see some load issues by lengthening the session time-out, but I haven't seen much of anything that they should be storing in a session beyond your identity and an indicator of if you are a subscribed user. That should be...

DDI Subscribers: Are you satisfied with your subscription?

My biggest points of dissatisfaction are with the fiddly bits of the UI, primarily dealing with the login. For a long time their login prompt on the main page didn't follow standard login form behavior (enter login <tab> enter password <enter>), you had to actually click the login button or tab...

Without knowing the details of the agreement, no one can know for sure how much negotiation happened and how much influence each side had on the final terms of the agreement, but I don't know of very many cases where in a settlement between a multi-billion dollar corporation and a single...

    Ema's RPG Sheet Website down...

I didn't mean to imply that I thought copyright infringement wasn't wrong, just that copyright infringement and theft are two completely different things both by definition and by legal code and precedents. I'm just edgy and worked up because the tools Ema managed to create for his site were...

In that case, Ema is giving different stories to different folks. Here is what he sent me directly when I asked if there was any way to get any of the character info I had saved:

    Ema's RPG Sheet Website down...

Actually, I contacted Ema to ask about getting at least the raw data from my characters (name, descriptions, etc.) and was informed that as part of the agreement with WotC, all of the data (including my data) had been deleted. So apparently WotC had no problems dictating the destruction of my...

Well, the US Supreme Court disagrees with you on that. According to Dowling v. United States (Dowling v. United States (1985) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia): RIAA and MPAA would like us all to believe that infringement = theft, but in the US legal system that just isn't true.

I don't think the ISP did anything, and I don't think they are the ones who received the C&D (except maybe to forward it to Ema). The site owner contact information is freely available in the WHOIS for the domain, and usually the C&D doesn't go to the hosting provider unless the site owner is...
