D&D 5E (2024) Anyone else dislike the "keyword" style language of 5.24?

"the airborne poisons are brought into your lungs and seep into your blood weakening you, your body feels heavy and your mind is awash from the toxins, the smell burning your nose makes you constantly want to gag, your reactions slow and vision blurs, you don't notice all the dangers until too...

D&D 5E (2024) Anyone else dislike the "keyword" style language of 5.24?

it's clearer to say utilize object action because fast hands doesn't function with all actions, if you want to tie a rope as a rogue if it was just a plain action not utilize object action you'd be plumb out of luck if you wanted to use fast hands.

D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

i think i'd split the difference and go with Order VS Liberty,

well, in any circumstance there's always those who end up being beyond helping.

D&D 5E (2024) Anyone else dislike the "keyword" style language of 5.24?

we had that thread only a few days ago debating the 'natural language' rules interaction of a pair of abilities from an eldritch knight/bladesinger multiclass, whether subbing out one of an attack action's extra attacks for a cantrip counted as 'using your action to cast a cantrip' which could...

D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

looking at this from the other direction what if rather than making 'law' sound worse you made chaos sound better, if chaos was instead called 'liberty' or similar, 'law vs liberty' presents a duality which is much clearer to see the benefits of both sides.

    D&D General Limiting Utility Cantrips

if you're referring to the 2024 rules for the Light cantrip, they specify 'cannot target anything worn or held by someone else' meaning you can use the spell on anything worn or held by yourself, and most GMs i imagine would be more than willing to let you use it on something worn or held by...

D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

oh i agree that they're a bit half-baked, but that doesn't prevent them from being the base of something good, they just needed a little more time in the oven.

D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

because, in addition to the good point that Deset Gled makes below: i also think that alignment and it's mechanics are very interesting and have a long history of being integral to many of the kinds of stories that DnD tries to embody, the kinds of ideas like 'the blade only a hero pure of...

D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

i think it's a real shame there are so many people saying things to the effect of '5e does it best by not doing anything with it'

D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

i'm not really informed enough on the nuances of alignment in most editions to really cast judgement here but i hope for the edition where alignment manages to achieve the perfect manifestation of being impactful, nuanced, clearly defined, well integrated and enjoyable to use.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Tamer: A Monster Tamer Class - Balancing Questions

i wonder if those are what you want to compare it to? considering the whole class is meant to be dedicated to the pet-structure design budget rather than merely a subclass's worth.

    D&D General Limiting Utility Cantrips

honestly, i think light could just be deleted and for most intents and purposes replaced by produce flame, which, while also an offensive cantrip, is one of the more reigned in ones and most all spellcasters already get other offensive cantrips, if you absolutely need your light to be 20/20...

    D&D General Limiting Utility Cantrips

on the matter of guidance, while it is a problem spell in that it is far too good at what it does, which is assisting skill checks, i do not think it is the same kind of problem spell like those of light and mage hand, as there is no 'problem' that it is directly 'solves' and renders obsolete...

    D&D General Limiting Utility Cantrips

i feel like part of the point of cantrips is getting a good number of uses out of them so i wouldn't make the components consumable but i would make them costly and awkward to obtain, like the 100GP jeweled horn or glass eye required to cast Clairvoyance, that's not something you just come...

    D&D General Limiting Utility Cantrips

casters might have less slots than 3.5e but it seems more often than not past the first few levels they're still not running out of slots before long resting again and getting them all back, most groups just don't seem to want run the requisite attrition to get to that point, i would rather...

    D&D General Limiting Utility Cantrips

i don't really care if they're 'too weak', they're there as the fallback option most of the time, and as it is i feel casters rarely encounter the requisite attrition to get through enough of their slots to be relying on cantrips for their damage anyway, especially at higher levels where you're...

    D&D General Limiting Utility Cantrips

i mean, i'm not trying to claim damage cantrips are amazing but i still feel at baseline that they're too good for what they are, especially when you factor in that they auto-scale three times and exist in combination with levelled casting, it's just a combination of things that all add up...

    D&D General Limiting Utility Cantrips

i haven't really noticed those discussions much, what kinds of challenges are we talking about here? i mean, i know about Light removing the need for torches and Mage Hand being able to mess with traps but none of the other cantrips jump out at me as a huge issue for 'bypassing challenges'...
