Gothic 1 and 2: Anyone Play them?

I played both Gothic I and II and found them to be amongst the best RPGs I ever played (up there with Fallout, BG 2, and Planescape Torment). The controls take some getting use to, and the beginnings are HARD. Combat feels clumsy, but you start completely unskilled. Once you get some levels...

    Sons of Gruumsh (spoiler alert)

My group ambushed an orc patrol outside the fortress and dressed up in the gear. Only one spoke Orcish so he was forced to do most of the talking. He taught each other character a number of pre-selected phrases (2+Int bonus) that they had to write down in advance. Comedy gold. (The wyvern was...

Deluxe Gaming Products - Lessons from Ptolus

Having totally destroyed by copy of City of the Spider Queen through frequent flipping (maps on 1 page, monsters on another, and the enocounter text on a third), I totally prefer the idea of separate books for maps, monsters and module text. (I actually prefer mosnter stat blocks listed inline...

Help an 7th level Rogue Archer

There's a real obvious thing you can do - hide first, and snipe. From the SRD: Sniping: If you’ve already successfully hidden at least 10 feet from your target, you can make one ranged attack, then immediately hide again. You take a –20 penalty on your Hide check to conceal yourself after the...

    Ptolus at Amazon?

Do you think Monte even has a choice in the matter? WW is his publisher - if they don't call the shots on how a book gets distrubted, they have a major influence. On such a high-risk product (risky as in a very expensive flop if it doesn't sell), I'm sure WW would make sure that they get their...

    Ptolus at Amazon?

Because it's possible he has more than one concern, and also that Monte is under no obligation to discuss his inner business workings with everyone on some web forum. 1) He has to worry about returns from the book trade that he doesn't have to from the hobby trade. Returns can kill a small...

    Ptolus at Amazon?

I think it's simply that Monte doesn't want to have to worry about returns from the book business. Taking the risk of having to potentially return $60 x 2,000 units to Amazon (note, numbers pulled out of my ass) 180 days from now sounds like a good way to ruin your business.

Is there any official WOTC feat that allows assasins to make death attacks at range?

    Knight/Paladin characters

On the surface, the two classes go together very well - they benefit from the same stats, complement each other's saving throws, fight with the same weapons, and don't give up any BAB. And both get to be snooty towards the party rogue :) So, barring the silly no-multiclassing paladin rules...

What would a monk have to give up?

Wouldn't it be easier to create unarmed combat feats for a fighter? Plus a few other feats to provide some monk-like abilities?

    Hordes of the Abyss.

In the Eternal Champion novels by Michael Moorck, the power of the Lords of Chaos and Law varied considerably from world to world. In some places, Arioch wa the big bad, and others, was much weaker than the other lords of chaos. Why should the DnD embodiments of chaos be static either?

    Hordes of the Abyss.

Well, I guess you have to know a 40 HD outsider before you can summon it. That's going to require a Knowledge (Planes) check with a DC of 50. Certainly possible, but you better start studying. Much easier to summon 2 20 HD creatures.

Demon Lords and Princes: How *Bad* Should They Be?

1E Scripture Lolth should have 66 HP, and Tiamat should be slain by 48 HP of damage to the body. Anything else is heresy.

As a player, do you enjoy moral dilemmas and no-win situations?

Well, it seems that Yoda were merely overly pessimistic, rather than outright lying - he knew that Vader was Luke's father and feared that Luke would be turned if his training was not complete. Neither is wrong - depending on their point of view. However, Jedi do lie occasionally (and Qui-Gon...

As a player, do you enjoy moral dilemmas and no-win situations?

If I were the paladin, my actions would be clear. Understanding the moral calculus, I would allow the wizard to go free, and then actively aid in the defense of the town (I don't know the particulars of the threat, but usually the PCs would be able to help). Once the threat was dealt with, I...

    Adventurers under siege

Give the PCs good maps of their location and a good breakdown of their forces (if any) so they can plan ahead. This sort of thing is where miniatures really shine, though the 5' square scale can be problematic if it's anything larger than a small keep (I sugest switching to 10' or 30' squares)...

    Adventure Path Three: You'd Do...

How about political intrigue I'd like to keep it small - just a couple of kingdoms. No planar travel, no demonic threat, no cultists, no end of the world scenario. Something like a kingdom falls into civil war after the last known heir is killed mysteriously. PCs can investigate the death...
