How important is art to you?

I like evocative art, or practical art (i.e. "this is what that heavy door with the runes looks like".) I don't think it is necessary as long as there are good, concise written descriptions. But it can enhance play. I was playing the original Tomb of Horrors a couple of weeks ago, and the art...

    D&D 5E (2014) Players with multiple characters

If I have only one or two players, everybody tends to run multiple characters. If I have three or more players, everybody tends to run one character.

    Dice Rankings - The Poll

I have a bunch of noncaltropian d4s, the barrel dice kind. I love them. The normal caltrop kind do suck, though.

What do you miss from the D&D Next playtest?

I have a vague memory that there was a Ranger. And that I really liked it. But I can't check because it seems that I either recycled the playtest stuff, or it was on the computer that went kaput. Am I misrembering, or did they release a playtest Ranger?

"Theater of the Mind" or Map and Minis?

I like TotM, but visual representations are helpful too. I have a grid board and it is handy for drawing straight lines for walls, though I have also used rough sketches on scraps of paper or pencils ploinked down to represent walls. One of my players really likes to see where everything is...

    D&D 5E (2014) You find a magical _____, it does _____

The Next Object When found, The Next Object appears to be just an amorphous blob of clay, though transmutative magic may be detected. When one holds it in one's hands and thinks about an ordinary object, the clay will slowly shape itself into that object over the course of 10 minutes. The...

Drizzt Do'Urden Poll: Love Him Or Hate Him?

By All The Hackneyed Fantasy Gods Ever, I had forgotten that he was the one responsible for mucking up my favorite 1e class. So much for my indifferent!

Would you rather have Expertise or Advantage on a roll?

If I forced myself to take Rogue or Bard levels to get Expertise, then I would have Expertise. But I could still do things while playing to generate favorable circumstances, and thus also get advantage. If I had a class ability that somehow gave me Advantage, having favorable circumstances would...

Would you rather have Expertise or Advantage on a roll?

Expertise. Why? Because if I don't have Advantage, it is still possible to also create Advantage, but if I don't have Expertise, nothing will get me Expertise.

    Worst character possible

Bring in a chaotic evil character secretly several levels higher than the other characters. Have a friend bring in a lawful good character who is also several levels higher than the others. Start fighting each other. (idea courtesy of my first ever D&D game 34 years ago. I had a 1st level...

Fixing the Fighter - Making room for the warlord, ranger, barbarian, rogue, and more.

I just want to say I greatly approve of this idea. Fighters should get multiple styles, and more as they level, and not have interesting fighting styles gated behind the optional feat system.

Survivor Subclasses (Non-Magic)- BATTLE MASTER WINS!

(I still think the Thief is alive at 1 hp, hiding in shadows with a smug look on her face)

PF2 rule, 3 actions per turn, anyone experimenting with this in 5e?

Requiring an action to draw an arrow could keep ranged combat in check. With an arrow already knocked an archer could get two shots the first round. Drawing a sword is an action, so it doesn't make sense that drawing or retrieving anything else would not be.

Survivor Subclasses (Non-Magic)- BATTLE MASTER WINS!

I think Thief should still be there at 1 point.

    Should fighters be skill monkeys?

I have always thought that Fighters should get Athletics as a bonus skill. The class is trained in hauling around heavy armor (even if those lightweight DEX Fighters refuse to wear it) and all about doing constant physical things.

    D&D 5E (2014) You find a magical _____, it does _____

Hunter Serpentine This ball of stone is shaped like a coiled snake in the midst of swallowing its unfortunate prey. To activate it, the possessor needs only to speak the true name of the desired target while touching the stone prey, and then toss the stone ball onto the ground, where it...

In your most recent game, were human variants allowed?

In my most recent game, variant humans were allowed. Two of the four players picked variant human, and picked Athletic and Alert for their feats. I think they just picked the first feat that they saw that they liked, since this is the first time I allowed feats. I have been using an all odd...

    D&D 5E (2014) Make Up a Goblin Fact

Goblins suffer from anxiety when Hobgoblins and Bugbear are nearby; they fear their bigger cousins are there to beat them up, take their stuff, and boss them around. Their tiny brains also don't comprehend Bugbears as a different thing, but simply as larger Hobgoblins with an out of control hair...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you rule switching weapons?

Stowing a weapon costs an object interaction. Drawing a weapon can be done for each attack. My reason? The ammo property. It makes no sense to me that an arrows can be drawn an unlimited amount of times, but daggers cannot. I like things to be consistent.

    I keep forgetting it exists.
