    D&D 4E Modding 4e

Ah, whoops! Wouldn't mind seeing those. Although maybe deserves it's own thread, rather than derail this one. Sorry about that. I beefed up fighters with extra damage and some choosable feats, rather than a Power Strike type ability. And I gave Second Wind a serious thought, but decided to...

    D&D 4E Modding 4e

As some one who just started a S&W game, coming of 16 levels of 4e, I'd also be interested in hearing more on what you've been doing to 4e-ize S&W.

    Campaign design support group thread

Next friday we start a new campaign: a sandbox, set in the "New World's" unexplored west, which I will try to generate as we go. An old homebrew stands in for the "Old World", and I've been scouring the internet for sandbox resources (like this excellent weather generator).

    Legends & Lore: Clas Groups

I don't think it's a problem, no. That nobody needs help choosing a class is not true, but I'd agree that such help is easily available in most cases. But I agree with Mistwell's sentiment couple of posts above. But focusing such worries on kids always feels off to me. I won't hesitate...

    Legends & Lore: Clas Groups

Sure. Wizard and Fighter--no problem. Everybody grogs that. Usually the Rogue, too (or at least, grog thief/swashbuckler/skill monkey). But Cleric? Paladin? What's that? What's the difference? Ranger, wa-huh? Druid, what like in Asterix? Etc. Mitigated by how much D&D-descended media people...

    Legends & Lore: Clas Groups

Yes, often. I my experience, new players connect best with races.

Words, Phrases, and Misspellings We Hate

Ah, English. So easy to learn, so easily adjusted, so devoid of grammar, and such a pain to spell. Being a non-native speaker, I have plentiful sympathy for the spellers of the language. If you don't read a lot, I'm not sure how you'd learn it, as there's so little rhyme or reason to it and you...

[Points of Light] Static Damage an Improvement?

It's a turn off for me. Yeah, it saves time, but I like rolling damage. I'm totally cool with not rolling for attack, though. But ah like mah damage pool.

D&D 5E (2014) Final playtest packet due in mid September.

I've been doing many variations of that since forever--I call it a 'situation check' or 'reality check' (depending on context). The variation that evolved over the course of my 4e campaign was: I roll a d6 on a 1-2, the situation turns out in the group's disfavour on a 3-4, the situation turn...

    Difference From 10 Years Ago?

And I've found your analysis and examples to have made forge-thought much more relatable to me than the original articles and discussions.

    D&D 5E (2014) LL- Subclasses and Complexity

I've always like subclasses. Don't really know why I like them over a lot of other approaches, but I do. But the Mage should totally be renamed to Magic-User. Wizard being a subclass of Mage instead of vice-versa also seems strange to me, although I realize it's totally arbitrary.

    An everchanging gaming language?

It took me a while to decypher a lot of the jargon here after I returned from my 7-year gaming hiatus. It was less the new jargon and more the old jargon being used slightly differently that threw me off, making me misunderstand a lot of posts. Now I've gotten used to the new language and am...

    Difference From 10 Years Ago?

I agree with Ahnehnois on that change in attitudes towards houserules, being an avid tinkerer myself. From it being considered the norm, to the general community coming off as somewhat hostile towards it. But it was already starting to feel like that in the mid-2000s, when I was drifting out...

    Difference From 10 Years Ago?

What's the SoS? I largely like the academic discussion. Game theory has come a long way while I was away. But it's a bit dominating. *shrug* Different times... Yeah, you didn't get many anti-3e people over here when 3e was coming out--the ones who did were quickly labelled as grognards--but...

    Difference From 10 Years Ago?

The mood on ENW is definitely different than it was 10 years ago, but I don't think the level of discourse has gone down, per say. I think ENW is a lot more polite than it used to be. Overall, the discussion feels a lot more... academic. I mean, there's the undercurrent of vitriol between 3e...

    Difference From 10 Years Ago?

I remember a lot of arguing about whether 3e and 3.5 were compatible, whether 3.5 was a welcome refresh of the rules or a heartless money grab, and whether 3.5 was still "proper D&D" because of the game's increased dependency on miniatures.

D&D 5E (2014) Final playtest packet due in mid September.

I wouldn't argue that the point of organized play is to not use house rules, as much as it's a necessity of the format. And I echo that I don't know anyone in real-life who plays without house rules--these elusive beasts I only know of from the internet.

How Much of D&D is the Rules?

We switched to 3e when it came out, and the group broke up about a year after 3.5 came out. The little GURPS I've played since wasn't D&D flavored.

How Much of D&D is the Rules?

We played "D&D" using GURPS for years. We just cherry picked cogs into a D&D shape.
  20. Viking Bastard

How Much of D&D is the Rules?

Hard to answer. D&D is for me a specific type of a RPG--hack and slash, gonzo blender fantasy, adventuring for gold and fame--infused with certain tropes and monsters--dragons, goblins, mindflayers, beholders, etc.--and following some universal rule constructs--d20s are involved in action...
