Year of the Zombie: Hold at all Costs 1 Mapping

Cool! I'm not sure if you've got Photoshop there, but if you want to get that "movie satellite image" look, you might try adding some Film Grain and overlaying it with a line Halftone Pattern to give it scan lines. Something like this (although keep in mind, this is just a quickie.)

You'll probably have a lot more luck drawing in potential customers if you put up a gallery of samples for folks to peruse rather than requiring that folks email you to see them. There are free solutions for this if you don't want to set up a website of your own.

    Britannia Map Critique?

The second. I think the dark water in the first one just flattens the whole thing; the second pops more. Plus, the water in the second is closer to the color you'd see in an atlas, which is more in line with the look of the rest of the map.

Should WOTC participate in the ENnies?

I was in mid-thought formulating pretty much the exact response when I scrolled down to Umbran's. So, ditto.

[ZNG] Fantasy Cartography episode 6 now available!

The blue was just painted in on a layer behind the lines, just like I painted in the forest color last time. I just used long, horizontal strokes with a soft-edged brush; there's no tricks involved in that one!

    ZNG Cartography

Oh, and since I haven't posted it here yet... This is the map I showed briefly in the last episode; it's one of the (many!) filler maps I've been working on for the book.

Yep; looks like he has an earth layer and a grass layer on top of that. I'd do it as a solid layer of each and then mask out the grass. If you use a soft brush you'd be able to get a nice, natural looking transition. And I'd probably reduce the opacity on the grass to let just a hint of the...

Images like that look great when you have their color to help differentiate different elements, but when you see them in black and white they can get muddy. If you want a map like that to come out a little clearer in B&W, open it up in Photoshop, desaturate it so you'll see what it'll look like...

Chris West is a hard act to follow! :D You'll find that I'll get more into realistic textures and such as the scale of the map gets smaller. (I've got a work-in-progress hermit's cabin over in this thread as an example; I still have a lot of work to do on that one, but it gives you the general...
