    A Common problem.

As a DM this bothers me. As a player, it never crosses my mind. I think this is because I spend most of my DMing time world building rather than running an actual game. The more time I build a world, the more I want it to look and feel real. Usually beyond what was necessary to run a game in it...

D&D 4E 4E combat and powers: How to keep the baby and not the bathwater?

These two points are quite similar, so let me provide one counterpoint for both. Take your favourite song, the one that you always love to hear, the one you always get up and sing or dance along with. That's an awesome song. Now listen to it 100 times in a row. Is it still your favourite? No...

D&D 4E 4E combat and powers: How to keep the baby and not the bathwater?

No, that's wrong. The whole point of having the -5 penalty is to enable the same action to be used more than once per encounter, whilst preventing it from being the best option all of the time. I don't agree that we want to limit things to once per encounter at all. * Special moves should be...

D&D 4E 4E combat and powers: How to keep the baby and not the bathwater?

At the risk of prolonging your argument... Having something happen for every group definitely makes it less special. If you don't see that, you clearly want something different from the game than what I want. For me, the very definition of an awesome moment involves something unexpected. If you...

D&D 4E 4E combat and powers: How to keep the baby and not the bathwater?

The 'all or nothing'/'Damage or effect' approach of 3E limits the usefulness of special attacks. The 'powers or nothing' approach of 4E provides similar problems. I want to see something that actually provides options, all of the time, but have those options balanced. Let's start by considering...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should the +1 Sword Exist in 5E?

True, but that was sort of the point. Flaming swords would still be better against creatures which are vulnerable to fire... I think my goal here is to avoid the comparisons between Sword +1 and Flaming Sword +1. I want the rider effects to cost plusses, like they did in 3rd Ed, but with the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should the +1 Sword Exist in 5E?

Like others here, I feel the +1 to +5 thing is a sacred cow. However, I'd be happy to see the +X bonus on OTHER swords removed. That'd make +X swords special straight away. Sure, your flametongue does fire damage, but my +3 sword hits more often, and harder.

Victories and No Defeats in D&D

And this is where random encounters played a big part. If every encounter is tied to the story, then there are no encounters where the only goal is survival. If survival is the only goal, retreat is a sensible choice. If you have to fight the encounter for any reason, players will stay and fight...

    D&D 4E Simple 5e Healing that reconciles pre-4e and post-4e HP styles

I have to agree with you there Jester. I like where this is going - for a generic fantasy RPG, but it doesn't sound like DND to me. Hit Points are Hit Points. I can see an argument for using '% of targets HP' instead of 1d8+1 etc, but having multiple pools of health doesn't sit well with me...

Old School : Tucker's Kobolds and Trained Jellies

Sadly yes. I stick with that group because the role play outside of combat is so good. Thanks for the clarification. I think it's the number of exceptions in 4E that spoil it really. Looking at the combat chapter on its own - no problem. Throw in thousands of different powers... yuck. I'm...

    D&D 5E (2014) Crazy Ideas 5E Should Not Adopt

    125. At the end of each game session you must upload your characters to WotC. Any new equipment will be deleted if some other character from some other game also gained that item on the same day. 126. If you forget to shout "Ding!" when leveling up, you automatically lose the new level and have...

Feats and How to Ruin Them

I think perhaps the key point of this thread is that feats need to be less diverse in the size of their effect. One key way to do this is to remove flat mechanical bonuses. There shouldn't be any feats that are used every round. Therefore +"1 to hit with [primary weapon type]" is a bad feat...

Old School : Tucker's Kobolds and Trained Jellies

Pretty much yes. It certainly bothers me more than Vancian magic. Afterall, with Vancian magic, we are talking about magic. It's not a real world thing, therefore the concept that a spell would be wiped from your memory the moment you cast it is just fine. That never bothered me in the...

    War Hammer 40k

Warhammer 40k is a great game. Definitely not an RPG though! It should have a pretty big following wherever you go - check out if there's a 'Games Workshop' store in your city. If there is, they'll be only too happy to give you a demonstration. As Dndungeoneer said though; it can be very...

Seminar Transcript - Class Design: From Assassins to Wizards

I don't care when it turns up - I was never a fan of monks. But when it does turn up, I totally agree with you. I needs to have the same range of diversity that every other class has. None of this "You can use special monk weapons, but you do more damage if you don't" nonsense.

Seminar Transcript - Reimagining Skills and Ability Scores

Exactly. While I quoted your post, I was reacting more to the people making statements like, "If Deva isn't in, 5E isn't for me". Also, I cannot award you XP at this time.

WotC to Release 1st Edition Premium Core Rulebooks Reprints

Really? I find that hard to believe. My copy of the Warhammer 40,000 3rd edition rulebook fell apart within about 2 hours of opening. Is UA that bad?

Seminar Transcript - Reimagining Skills and Ability Scores

I agree with you, but I still don't want them in the first players handbook. I think that's what people are forgetting here. You can't fit everything in the first book. Unless you make it like say, The Encyclopaedia Britannica 'book'. I love devas and dragonborn, even if they did take a while to...

Seminar Transcript - Class Design: From Assassins to Wizards

Exactly. This statement is very true in my opinion: That's not to say that 5E can't include powerpoints and other spell mechanics as well. Possibly tied to different classes. When 3E was coming out, that was my understanding of the situation - Wizards were vancian, and sorcerers used spell...
