I disagree on both points. Firstly, magic items do not need to be in the PHB, as evidenced by previous editions. Secondly, you do not need the DMG to adjudicate the game, although it certainly helps. This is because it is intended to be a guide to running the game, not a book of game rules...

Reflavouring is fine and very useful, but in this case misses the point entirely. Where are the spells that stun, charm, paralyze etc without dealing damage? Where are the spells that boost your allies rather than hinder your opponents? Where are the spells that feature as non damaging barriers...

I'd love to see a show of hands regarding how many people bought 4E books, and regretted it. Given the choice I'd un-buy my 4E DMG and MM, because I'll never get sufficient use out of them. Sadly it looks like I'm stuck playing 4E for the time being, so I'll keep the PHB.

QFT I don't think I'll ever reconcile that problem. You don't know if you've been hit until you determine which type of healing you receive. I don't find that cinematic at all.

For me it's usually the smell of new plastic miniatures when you first open the box. But that's because I've spent so much time around Warhammer 40,000. I do get the old book thing too. I've got my 2E MM right here, and it smells great. I just tested the 3E and 4E MMs. They don't smell good.
