D&D 4E Is 4E doing it for you?

Oh no, I was just referring to the trend in this thread and a couple of others that I've read. I have no doubt that there's plenty of players enjoying the game... they're just not the ones posting regularly in these threads. You're still doing this. But you probably print them out on separate...

D&D 4E Is 4E doing it for you?

No, it's not doing it for me. It seems to me from reading this whole thread that a lot of the people posting in favour of 4E are the DMs, while a lot of those posting in favour of 3E are the players. This is no small co-incidence. 4E has a major focus on making things fun for the DM, sometimes...

    11 Reasons Why I Prefer D&D 4E

Wizards are entirely optional. Fighters are entirely optional. Heck, even monsters are optional. That doesn't mean they're not going to get used. Pre-written modules assume you're using minions in the same way that they assume you're using wizards and fighters.

    Farewell to thee D&D

It's a gray area. Not a black and white switch. You could change it in many hundreds of ways and still title it 'Dungeons and Dragons', but in the end it has to FEEL like Dungeons and Dragons. If the feeling isn't right, then it's not the same game anymore, and then it should have a different...

If your group didn't like 4e...

Oh dear. That bodes well... I shouldn't doomsay, but if the previous target group doesn't like it... and the current target group doesn't like it... Who are they selling it to?

    Farewell to thee D&D

Suits me! Less almost identical powers to sift through sounds like a clear improvement to me. But then I was also suggesting getting rid of them altogether.

    11 Reasons Why I Prefer D&D 4E

All of the above are valid points that I agree with. My issue is with the perceived achievement of killing a minion. AC and tactical advantage aside, killing a monster with lots of hit points has a great deal more kudos than killing a monster with one hit point. I do not find killing minions...

    11 Reasons Why I Prefer D&D 4E

Whoops. Got my threads mixed up. Thought this was 'Farewell to thee D&D'. Apologies to all!

    11 Reasons Why I Prefer D&D 4E

Easy. Each type of creature has the same counter associated with it. From a character perspective - the ones that are armed like fighters are the fighters, the ones that are armed like fodder are the minions. The charact can tell them apart by appearance, and funnily enough, so can I.

DMs: Do you tell players the DC before they roll?

For AC, Saves/defenses, spell penetration and such? No. For actions that a character can weigh up beforehand? Yes. Think of it this way: You and I standing in front of a pit can give ourselves a good estimate of whether or not we can jump to the other side. When you abstract that into a...

    11 Reasons Why I Prefer D&D 4E

This would be fine... for about 5 battles. It soon devolves into the same thing though. Why bother rolling? It used to be that even against some of the lowliest critters you had to roll for damage because *gasp* you might roll a 1 for damage. There is no pleasure in the kill when there is no...

    Farewell to thee D&D

Oh certainly. I see 4th ed as being the first time the fundamental mechanics of combat have changed. In 0-3.p characters rolled a d20 to hit (str vs ac), then rolled the appropriate damage die, and that was about all there was to it. In 4E they have to determine one of 5 or so different attacks...

    11 Reasons Why I Prefer D&D 4E

Yeah... that's a great idea... except we're running bought modules from the company that makes the game. This isn't a case of the DM assigning the wrong creatures to a combat. It's KotS played straight as it is written. And in the battles where we have had minions (mostly in the kobold lair...

    Farewell to thee D&D

I've been resisting up until now, but I have to chime in here. Is it reasonable to expect that the designers will aim to keep the game similar enough that the existing fans will stay on? I speak as one who has seen the death of a game series due to the developers working to harness a new...

    11 Reasons Why I Prefer D&D 4E

This is my major complaint also. In our last game (second game of 4e) our 1st level party fought about 5 kobolds. And it took us an hour and a half. Now forgive me for being old fashioned, but my memory of kobolds is that they are 'weak' and come in hordes. 5 kobolds should not take that long to...

    The Ultimate (A)D&D Kitbash

I think Reynard was reading my mind when he opened this topic. Since the first clear rumours of 4E came about I've been considering this exact exercise. Here's my results: Start with 3.5 and alter as follows: * Saves become Defences – Your Defence value = old Save bonus +10. Attacks are made...

    trap, damage, and XP

I'm concerned about this also. None of the traps listed in DMG are simple. How do I make simple old fashioned traps and how much XP do they warrant? examples: single firing arrow traps pit traps shocking grasp on the door handle traps

    D&D 4E UPDATED 6/20/08! kiznit's 4e Fold-over Character Sheet w/ Cards

I noticed a couple of things with the fillable version: * The font auto resizes in some locations and not others. In some it appears needlessly small (Powers, equipment and class/race abilities in particular) * The first line of At Will, Encounter and Utility seems to all be the same field. And...

Can you do a "diamond" shaped blast?

I would suggest laying it out this way instead of using a diamond ..... .x... .xx.. .xxx. .cxx. ...x. The 'square' is 'turned' but does not make a diamond. It's still 3x3, and it still only uses 9 squares.

    D&D 4E Is 4E a 'Rules Light' Game?

I agree with the others. 4E is a lot lighter than 3E, but not 'rules light' on its own. What annoys me, and adds a lot to the weight of the rules is that they missed a golden opportunity when they wrote up the attack powers. A vast proportion of the attack powers (especially for defenders and...
