D&D 5E (2014) Red Flags For Classes In Sources Beyond The Player's Handbook

Those two items I'm not too concerned about. I have a house rule in effect for multiclassing that requires you to keep your two levels as close as the second class' primary stat (e.g. a fighter/rogue with a Dexterity 15 needs to keep within two levels of each other; 4/2, 7/5, etc). Discourages...

D&D 5E (2014) Red Flags For Classes In Sources Beyond The Player's Handbook

Exactly. Why play a Pact Blade Warlock when you can play a Hexblade? And so on. The thing is, we've all seen the 'white room analysis' of various 5E elements, and it's shortcomings, for the past few years. I've been playing my 5E Star Wars Conversion for the last year and a half. Gonna start...

D&D 5E (2014) Red Flags For Classes In Sources Beyond The Player's Handbook

I've heard rumblings that the Hexblade is "better at melee fighting than a fighter"; likewise with the Zealot and frenzy barbarian. I'm just after some opinions before I make up my mind.

D&D 5E (2014) Red Flags For Classes In Sources Beyond The Player's Handbook

In putting together a Session Zero Payer's Guide, I have been hesitant on what to put in the Allowed Sources list. I know of a couple Red Flags (e.g. the Hexblade, and the Zealot). What classes / subclasses would you put on your 'Not Gonna Happen List'?

    A Question for Resurrection Connoisseurs

Agreed. This is the pinnacle of PC spell power. The spell says "...can even provide a new body if the original no longer exists, in which case you must speak the creature's name." [emphasis mine] If the barbarian player was role-playing his character accordingly with the aforementioned head...

D&D 5E (2014) Feats: Do they stifle creativity and reduce options?

While I certainly understand the "role-playing as creativity" element, why does using feats exclude/nullify this? If ( and this question is for pming as well), you don't use feats, multiclassing, and non-PHB stuff, instead diversifying your characters through role-play aspects, why can you...

D&D 5E (2014) Feats: Do they stifle creativity and reduce options?

Agreed, but that problem goes both ways. If a player role-plays a situation eloquently like a seasoned thespian, but he put an 8 dump stat into Charisma... I have gotten in the habit of using a range of numbers instead of a static DC (e.g. 8+1d4 instead of a 10, or 9+1d6 instead of a 15, etc)...

    Encounters per day

I want the option of doing whatever I need to do to further the story. If I need 6-8 light encounters, great. If I need 2 holy smokes encounters, so be it. In light of this, I adopted a Milestone Dependent Rest system some time ago, and I love it. In my system, PCs need to rest (lower case)...

    D&D 5E (2014) UA: "Greyhawk" Initiative

I have been using this system for some time now (first, the DM Speed Factor variant and then Mearls' Greyhawk variant), and I love it. It randomizes combat for me and my group quite nicely, and does not slow things down hardly at all. Some things that I have tweaked or just do: - Players must...

    D&D 5E (2014) Deconstructing 5e: Typical Wealth by Level

Quick question: are you saying that the experience table can be used as a Hoard Guide (355,000gp divided by four PCs at 20th level) OR a Personal Guide (355,000gp to each of the four PCs at 20th level)?

    House ruling exhaustion

I use the following rule at my table: Each time you reach 0 hit points, you will gain a level of Exhaustion; these levels stack with each other. A Short Rest will negate one level of this exhaustion per point of Constitution modifier, while a Long Rest will negate double this amount (i.e. your...

D&D 5E (2014) Who has tried out the UA Greyhawk initiative rules variant?

I have used it since it came out, and I love it! It forces my players to be much more attuned to the situation at hand, and to be more tactically minded (do I declare a move, or just go for the quick attack?). They are more engaged than they ever have been, which is good. I do make a few...

D&D 5E (2014) Short and Long Rest limited Actions

I too, tinker with things all the time... and wonder if it's worth it. I don't remember where I heard it, but an amazing quote goes like this: "Complexity is the currency of a gaming system". In other words, you can get as complex and fiddly as you want, with any rule in the Game, but is the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wealth by level

TPK Games has a fantastic book called Fifth Edition Options (great stuff, can't recommend it enough!). It has a Wealth By Level chart on page 13. Not sure if I can copy it in its entirety here legally, but the bookends are: 2nd 200gp 20th 28,000gp

    D&D 5E (2014) Fifth Age: A hard science fiction 5e conversion

I've adapted these rules to the Star Wars setting, and we've been playing just over a year now. I have a bunch of old adventures, and some new EotE adventures that are pretty easy to convert.

D&D 5E (2014) Slow Natural Healing in actual play

Perfectly normal. When the PCs stop for the night to take a break, if they have amassed enough experience points to meet the milestone, they qualify for a Long Rest (i.e. they regain spell slots, appropriate class features, etc). If they had not amassed enough experience, I simply tell them that...

D&D 5E (2014) Slow Natural Healing in actual play

I make sure and award experience for non-combat encounters, which helps. I also have four levels of "natural healing": Refresh: you may spend 1 healing die per point of Constitution (must take roll). Requires one Action Revitalize: you may spend any available healing dice (take roll or...

D&D 5E (2014) Slow Natural Healing in actual play

I have Official Game Mechanic Rests tied to an experience point milestone (i.e. the first Short Rest of the day is at 33% of the Daily Budget, the second Short Rest is at 66%, and a Long Rest can occur at 100%). Now, the characters must still 'rest', such as sleeping overnight, and resting after...
