D&D 5E (2014) Mage Hand and the No Good, Low Down, Dirty Rotten Arcane Trickster

That character has since lost hold of his mortal form and moved on to a more... spiritual type..? Yeah, spiritual. Just to be clear, I had no problem whatsoever with the Mage Hand as a class feature. He used it quite often, without restriction. I merely had strong reservations about one of...

D&D 5E (2014) Of Wizards and specific 5e questions and musings

Seems to be a bit contradicting… but then again, a good portion of your posts seem to be pretty pro-wizard, so naturally you are going to lean away from any mechanic that limits them. Whatever though, man. I personally think WOTC did a good job with the Concentration mechanic [not perfect, I...

D&D 5E (2014) Of Wizards and specific 5e questions and musings

Anecdotal evidence is anecdotal. OP is a new player with a new DM. The kind of house rules you've adopted have not broken things in your Game, but have a very real possibility of wreaking havoc at alot of tables...

D&D 5E (2014) Zone spells and amazing damage potential

Such an image certainly DOES NOT invoke my sense of heroic fantasy...

D&D 5E (2014) Figuring the Offensive CR of a Spellcaster

Agreed, 100%. I have played since 1978, and this is, by far, my favorite addition! It's a 3E chassis, with 4E tweaks, and a 1/2E feel; what's not to love..?!?

D&D 5E (2014) Figuring the Offensive CR of a Spellcaster

Thanks! I don't feel too bad since I definitely wasn't looking under breath weapon for my spellcaster*..! *not a dragonborn, lol

D&D 5E (2014) Figuring the Offensive CR of a Spellcaster

Mouse, you're a straight shooter, and I don't doubt you for a second, but do you have a page reference for that? I looked for it last night, and couldn't find anything...

D&D 5E (2014) Figuring the Offensive CR of a Spellcaster

The DMG says to take three rounds of attacks when computing the offensive CR of a creature. Say I have a sorcerer who plans on casting three Fireballs in the first three rounds of combat... - Round 1 = 28 (8d6) average damage - Round 2 = 28 (8d6) average damage - Round 3 = 28 (8d6)...

    EN World EN5ider Has Launched!

So, how do I get one of those cool En5ider three ring binders?!?

    D&D 5E (2014) Jumping

Hey, that's pretty good. I have always felt that stats should mean something outside of a 'bonus in combat', and I really like the more consistent jump range. I will definitely give this a whirl..!

    D&D 5E (2014) Jumping

Apologies, was away from my DM Screen and the ole memory ain't what it used to be. The modifier is 15% (not 20%), per 5pts of the Athletics check. So, if you get a 31 on your check [20 roll + 5 Str mod + 6 prof bonus], divided by 5 is six increments of 15%; total of [.9 * your 20 Str score]...

    D&D 5E (2014) Jumping

I allow a jumper to extend his base norm by 20% per 5pts of an Athletics check. So, a PC with 20 Str and +6 proficiency who rolled a 20 on his die could jump 44ft. Quite a bit beyond the Olympic records, but hey, it's epic fantasy.

D&D 5E (2014) Can you Dodge and Attack on the same turn?

Yeah, and I'd have a hard time believing that your own attacks wouldn't be affected by Fido bobbing and weaving his little tail off...

    D&D 5E (2014) Stealthy Spellcasting in 5e

I have the Spellcaster make an Arcana check [if only a Verbal component], or an Arcana check w/ Disadvantage [if a Somatic component is involved]. I have not had a spellcaster proficient in Stealth try this yet, but I would let them add their proficiency bonus to the Arcana check if they were...

D&D 5E (2014) Why do we award Encounter XP instead of Adjusted XP?

I award the average of the actual and adjusted values. Very easy to do since I use Excel spreadsheets for EL calculating and experience...

D&D 5E (2014) can shields be used as improvised weapons?

I have really been intrigued with expanding the Reaction game mechanic of late. For instance, I let the PCs "spend" their Reaction to make a full Perception check on their turn (rather than their Passive score) if they wish. I think I would let the PC keep the shield AC bonus if he so chooses...

D&D 5E (2014) Is Anyone Using Variant Encumbrance?

The rules do account for this though. As soon as your 15 Str PC in Plate straps on his shield, longsword, and dagger he is at capacity. If he carries anything else his movement drops by 10ft.

    D&D 5E (2014) Strength bows?

You could merely create a new Weapon Property specific to the longbow whcih is the antithesis of Finesse: Might. When making an attack with a might weapon, you use your choice of your Strength or Dexterity modifier for the attack and damage rolls. You must use the same modifier for both...
