    Everyone starts at 1st level

I run a lot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That game handles this dynamic very well. There's a division between Heroes and White Hats - the champions and sidekicks. Who would want to play a sidekick? Lots of people, turns out, if the system supports them. Here's what I would suggest...

Put shellbelle and myself down for DinoPirates.

RPGs based off of Licensed Properties

Something like directly giving Plot Points for funny lines would have helped. The combat and wounds systems don't feel like they match up very well. I think its really Cortex, the fiddling with changing dice types makes it feel much mroe complicated than it is. Of course I feel the same way...

What does alignment describe? (Forked Thread: What Alignment is Rorschach?)

The only thing I've ever seen alignment used for in game was an excuse to be a jerk. I have to screw up our ambush, I'm Lawful Good! Of course I'm going to light the book we need to stop the demon on fire, I'm Chaotic Neutral! You shouldn't be surprised that I betray the group to the villain...

Excerpt - Save My Game - Narrative Threads

I liked the part about the Brick Wall. If you put something into the game, you should be prepared to have the players interact with it. This is why I avoid plot based games. It sounds like the GM had planned out that the PCs would go through the front and fight or talk their way in, and them...

RPGs based off of Licensed Properties

I'm playing in Serenity now, and to be honest I don't see what's in it that makes it feel like Firefly. The book is beautiful, the fluff and background material are great and its a nice read. But the rules feel clunky, none of us are overly happy with them, including the GM. It might just be...

Mystical and paranormal without the realms?

I like the Cthulhu approach. Yes, there is Another Place that these things come from. Learning about it will drive you insane. No, I can't describe it, because once your character understands it he'll be unable to describe it to someone else.

Tick-based initiative systems -what are your experiences?

I've used the ticks in 2e Exalted and it works wonderfully, if you use a battle wheel. To do this, you put a wheel with a number of divisions on it, kind of like a clock. Everyone rolls initiative to determine their starting position. When you take an action, you move forward however many...

    Mature content

I certainly play games with dark or adult themes, but I don't really want it in D&D. D&D I want PG13 heroic adventure. The Book of Vile Darkness I liked because cartoonish villany is all I really want from a D&D villain.

    Why Calculated XP is Important

For me it depends on the style of the game. I currently run a quasi-campaign in 4e. Its Keep on the Borderlands converted to the new rules. I run it as a sandbox adventure. Its my fill in game if a key player can't make it for one of our regular games, or my 'hey its Tuesday nothing to do...

One thing that bothers me lately about 4E players

Ah, that takes me back. I ever get into a 3x game again I'm going to make a half-orc ranger named Shafter. So who's the new ranger? The paladin? Wizard? :) I would agree with the OP that if your character seems weak and useless, it might not be the game that needs fixing.

d20 modern Failed...why? (or did it?)

Be an interesting game to me. Honestly, that's all I judge a game by. I don't spend my time worrying about the market or support or anything like that. Of course, by that measure Dogs in the Vineyard and Dread are more successful that 3.5, so I dunno how helpful that is to everyone else.

So when D&D isn't for me, what is?

D&D isn't all that. The current version is fun, but there's other games that do things in more interesting ways. Don't close yourself off. I've always heard that Harnmaster might be the kind of thing you're looking for. Or as others said grab D6 Fantasy or Hero or GURPS and roll your own...

Do official adventures follow DMG advice?

There's a problem with prewritten adventures. They suck. Write your own games, do things that your players are interested in. I almost never run a published adventure, and when I do my player complain that it isn't as good. Also, be willing to change things around midplay. Is everyone...

d20 modern Failed...why? (or did it?)

I like modern RPGs, most of what I play is basically modern - most of my Dread games, CoC, Buffy, even All Flesh has basically normal people as PCs. I find it more challenging to GM, and players can get into character more easily. But I didn't like d20 modern. I can barely tolerate classes...

Is 4e bringing new players to the game?

It brought me back. I'd fallen out of love as I saw 3e get too heavy and complex and moved to other simpler games. 4e's exception based design along with the power cards make it a game I want to play again. There's also a thriving 4e community on RPGnet, which had traditionally been mostly...

    2009 Ohio Gameday - May 16, 2009

Shellbelle and I will be there :). I might come up with something to run as well. If you want an insipid Dread idea, I did contemplate running Angsty Teen Drama Dread, where the PCs are a clique of teenage girl BFFs until a new kid comes to down who is the Hottest Guy In School. The girls...

What Did You Want Fourth Edition to be Like?

For a different perspective, I wouldn't have bought 4e if it weren't a reinvention. I didn't buy 3.5, because it was a revision. Why should I drop $100 on a game that plays the same as one I've already got? I can get 2-3 other games for the price of D&D, so a new version needs to offer...

What Did You Want Fourth Edition to be Like?

I disagree. 4e feels more old school to me. I think its the monsters. They feel more like 'and this guy can do this cool thing! Just because!' where 3e had everything under a more rigid structure. If you go back and look at edition wars you can just swap 3e/4e for AD&D/3e, and see that this...
