D&D 5E (2014) Kate Welch on Leaving WotC

I always wondered if there would be a good way to design a power-oriented set up that used the Tome of Battle Crusader set up, where you basically have a tiny deck/hand. I'd even keep the Divine Magic theme, because I like the idea that it's specifically divine magic that's a bit unpredictable.

D&D 5E (2014) Kate Welch on Leaving WotC

As someone who's played lots of non-D&D TTRPGs, specifically PbtA systems that put everything into the playbooks, people usually don't read through all the playbooks before picking. Rather, there's usually a paragraph summary of each, pick two or three playbooks from that, skim those, then pick...

    D&D 5E (2014) DM Screen 'Wilderness Kit'

So clearly Tasha's is meant to respond to the complaints that 5e's exploration pillar is lacking. I hope the fantastic locations section includes rules or at least guidance for making our own - planes and magical places are a great way to do this stuff.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dragon+ Issue 33 out now!

Pretty understandable given it was dropped in a UA then never again discussed - it's not even on the dndbeyond website now! Also, can confirm - I've definitely had players who get completely overwhelmed by what I would consider meaningful choices in combat, and it's better for everyone if they...

D&D 5E (2014) Kate Welch on Leaving WotC

Yeah I think its a bit ridiculous to assume improving the new player experience means changing the rules. If we want to talk golf, I've only played a bit, but I know enough that you don't start by making someone play a full 18 holes. There's a driving range, putting practice, all sorts of ways...

D&D 5E (2014) Kate Welch on Leaving WotC

D&D is a game made by a for-profit company, the examples you list aren't owned by anyone in particular. It is in WotC's direct financial interest to invest in expanding the hobby through an improved new user experience. Furthermore, even for the hobbies you list there are tons of people making...

D&D 5E (2014) Kate Welch on Leaving WotC

I'm not saying confusion over getting second level spells at third level is some impossible barrier, but it's simply one more hoop newer players have to jump through to access the content.

D&D 5E (2014) Kate Welch on Leaving WotC

It's a huge fallacy to say "There is net success, so everything that is happening is good". There are lots of things 5e does right, but it's also got a lot of factors completely external to the rules that help it out. Every time people talk about the success of the game they trot out CR and...

    D&D 5E (2014) The New D&D Book: Tasha's Cauldron of Everything!

I've seen a lot of 3P takes on swordmage that are basically paladins who get elemental smites instead of radiant ones.

Spell Complexity is good, but Spell Circle feels more "fantasy" to me. Regardless, anything but spell level.

One thing I will note is D&D isn't the only game to have issues with the new player experience. DOTA is fresh on my mind due to TI, and it's got a notoriously horrific new player experience - there's an established community of hardcore gamers who enjoy the complicated nature of the game, but...

D&D 5E (2014) Kate Welch on Leaving WotC

I think she's referring to the "older cousin" model - D&D is a hard game to learn if you don't have someone experienced to teach it. One example I've spent a lot of time dealing with is the spellcasting system. Unlike 4e, there's no small set of "suggested spells" for someone new who wants to...

    D&D 5E (2014) (Tasha's) Decoupling racial abilities--cautionary tale

It's going to be some form of packages, with some of them being really obvious things that people might've already been doing already in home games like language swaps (I know I do a bunch of language swaps already just because my assumptions about who speaks what are different than the core...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dragon+ Issue 33 out now!

Doesn't the new Oath of Glory have Spirit Guardians on the list? Feels like it's kinda-sorta supposed to replace Oath of the Crown. To add onto this, it's explicitly not techno because it's meant to be a preservation of ancient Dhakaani artificing techniques - the art we have of the Dhakaani...

D&D 5E (2014) Kate Welch on Leaving WotC

Not a good look for wotc, specifically the part where she only says it was good for "a while". Also, she's definitely right about the new-user experience.
