D&D 5E (2014) 5e has everything it needs for Dark Sun

Mearls is not an authority on 2021 wizards of the coast hardcovers. Not only was his account expressly his opinions rather than team consensus, but he's been shifted to other teams (last we heard he's coordinating with the video games) The question he's answering is "do we need psionics", not...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e has everything it needs for Dark Sun

Not a mod but if people want to talk caster vs noncaster balance that would make sense as a separate thread. At least the psion discussion was related to Dark Sun & the OP

D&D 5E (2014) 5e has everything it needs for Dark Sun

From a mechanical point of view, it's still safe to assume an official 5e take will have Psionics will still be subject to the same Counterspell and Dispel mechanics as everyone else. Psionics will still use the same framework of spells. Psions will be casting Dominate Person and Telekinesis at...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e has everything it needs for Dark Sun

Athas doesn't have the weave, and it's totally unnecessary to say that there needs to be some central magic processing plant to say that different sources of supernatural power can interact with each other. I think the more salient point is all supernatural power sources are interacting with...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e has everything it needs for Dark Sun

Bestiary might be a sticking point. Dark Sun has a deep alternate bestiary, and 5e setting book design just doesn't have room for it. Past editions obviously just had more books, but that's not an option in 5e unless they do a sequel to Volo's/Mordenkain's that's a soft Dark Sun bestiary.

D&D 5E (2014) 5e has everything it needs for Dark Sun

Already what happens with Warlocks. Also, I hope it's clear to everyone that if you want psion printed by WotC, it's going to use existing spells rather than reprint-with-alterations like 3.5

D&D 5E (2014) 5e has everything it needs for Dark Sun

I like Kibbles as well, even if I have some minor quibbles about specific designs. But psionics-magic transparency is actually a really good thing, because you want people to be able to interact with each other. Arcane and Divine spellcasters both interact just fine, making psionics something...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e has everything it needs for Dark Sun

One of the reasons I wrote the OP was that while "Psionics", broadly speaking, are important to Dark Sun, Psionics is not the same as having a psion class. Psionic themed subclasses and monsters, plus a boon-style Wild Talent system, are far more important parts of psionics to the setting. For...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e has everything it needs for Dark Sun

I'll agree with the notion that survival rules might legitimately be a bigger barrier to good 5e Dark Sun - spell bans aren't a terribly novel idea but work just fine, but you need to figure out what to do with things like Outlander. However, I stand by that "Elemental Cleric" and "Assassin...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e has everything it needs for Dark Sun

To clarify my view; I think RftLW having a brand new class was an extraordinary occurrence, and also notably eats up a ton of page count. I'd much rather have a few subclasses, Wild Talents, and then the necessary setting rules for things like defiling. And as others have noted, the simple...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e has everything it needs for Dark Sun

With the release of Tasha's Cauldron of Everything several months ago, I've come to the conclusion that 5e has everything it needs to release Dark Sun. The common refrain is we need a dedicated Psion class - Humbug, I say. The interesting part of Dark Sun psionics was always their widespread...

D&D 5E (2014) Everything We Know About The Ravenloft Book

Technically there's an image of one in the appendix. I haven't seen anything about a physical product though.

D&D General What is your favorite D&D cosmology?

Before Exploring Eberron, I would've voted the 4e world axis, but now that we actually have Eberron's fleshed out a bit I have to say I really like it.

D&D 5E (2014) Ravenloft Previews of Dementlieu, Lamordia, and Har'Akir

My two ceramics as someone who started in 3.5 is that reboots of settings should be expected and are good for a large variety of reasons - just because a TSR author cranked out a product in ninety days doesn't mean it's the pinnacle of writing and should never be changed. New authors can lend...

D&D 5E (2014) Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft Table of Contents

Adepts are pretty non existant at this point - Chris Lindsey, the WotC person in charge, has been ghosting everyone and the adepts that still exist have stopped producing content.

D&D 5E (2014) Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft Table of Contents

Kalidnay was moved to the Gray in 4e (Dungeon 190), while many people don't like 4e DS it's possible that WotC wants to keep most of the info from the 4e era reasonably canonical.
