D&D 5E (2014) What needs to be fixed in 5E?

I don't mind the bonuses to hit from magic gear to some extent, but it shouldn't be part of the required math and could even be something that not every magic weapon has. e.g. +0 flametongue vs a +2 sword. one does fire damage, and the other actually guides your hands to hit enemies more...

    Legends & Lore: Loyal Opposition

The way I read it, I don't think there is necessarily an additional numeric bonus for training... For the Novice swimming check (e.g. across a placid stream): Trained Swimmer does it automatically. Athletically Inclined must roll DC 10 (and gets his +4 bonus) For the Journeyman swimming check...

New Mearls Article - Skills in D&D

2 solutions: 1) DM disallows class-based "skill powers" from every class and only uses the Skills section (Thieves don't get Climb Walls, Fighters don't get Bend Bars / Life Gates, etc.) 2) Use the Bandit class? :)

New Mearls Article - Skills in D&D

This is a really interesting point. A thief could potentially have a different way of climbing presented in the class description and could even choose between the two methods when deciding to climb. e.g. maybe the Thief class has an ability to climb any easy wall at 1/2 speed and hard wall at...

    Rule of Three for 7/25

How about using a modification of the disease track? Instead of Endurance: Arcana or Religion could be used to prevent the ritual you cast from consuming/overwhelming you?

    Spirit Medium clarification

within three miles of your current location I had been wondering about this caveat. Since it also stipulates that the creature must have died this encounter, should I read into it that some encounters in Zeitgeist will cover more than 3 miles? :-)

Another MV preview: Hurly Burly brothers

Can't give you more XP right now, Aegeri, but the idea of bonuses when the other brother is in the area of the attack is fantastic. Although with their existing melee burst attack, that also means that they would want to be within 5 squares of each other. Off the top of my head, a ranged...

How do you feel about the only-general-feats direction of D&D?

All great points. I agree that some things are still better as feats or traits and don't need to be power-ized. Speaking to the theme / silo categorization of racial powers, etc., I think there's merit to expanding themes to include: * utility powers * feature power * attack powers * feats *...

How do you feel about the only-general-feats direction of D&D?

As has been said by others, I liked the class & race feats because many of them provided flavourful options to round out my character. And I didn't like them because there were so many it was overwhelming. Getting into (what I think is) my ideal, which is admittedly a huge stretch into 5e...

    Rule of Three: 05/16/2011

I know they're probably just testing out different models, but I'm curious about why the Revenant-style race model appears to not be considered more appropriate than the class model for a Werewolf. Combine a base race with some racial utility powers similar to the Shade (which functionally...

    Gloomwrought Looks Good!

I'm not up on any Mournland developments post the original Eberron book, but the Fear & Madness cards seem like they could be appropriate. Not too sure about Apathy? I'm thinking of using the cards when my PCs visit Dream. Probably Madness & Apathy for the more pleasant areas of the...

    D&D 4E Good 4e Stuff from 3rd Party Publishers?

Death Dealer from Goodman Games. It's an adventure, but also has an implied setting with a few details (and some vicious critical hit tables). I really like it for the different style of running-encounters and creepy atmosphere.

D&D 4E If 4e went in this direction...

Just wanted to add my voice to the chorus of those who really liked the ideas in your article, Matt. I think themes could really streamline many of the different systems that you mention and even other things such as the weapon mastery feats. Well done.

    Eladrin Death

Continuing along RangerWickett's thoughts, if the Eladrin Bard does get raised, have them change something about their character. IMC (although it hasn't happened yet), death changes everyone and they can choose from: * adding/changing a multiclass feat * for dragonborn, changing breath weapon...

    Ghost power and Foresight power

Icy End of the Earth is a great power to tie together a group of enemies over a campaign. I probably wouldn't take it as a player though. But it definitely will often be an encounter shaping power, since presumably every enemy will be bloodied at some point. A few of these guys in a group...

    Ghost power and Foresight power

Non-attack stuff? That's crazy-talk! :-) I hadn't actually thought of multi-target powers as a work-around. That's a very interesting version. Still gives the player a choice to try something else, but he knows part of his fate. Yeah, I think that's an improvement. I still like the idea...

    Ghost power and Foresight power

After thinking on it some more, if you allow the ghost to move a few squares before using its power, that might also work.

    Ghost power and Foresight power

Unfinished business is really evocative, but it's fairly situational. It can't be used in an encounter vs a single enemy, and since the range is only 5 squares you're leaning towards melee foes so you need another enemy to be right beside it. So I probably wouldn't pick it as my only encounter...

Your PC is a cleric: what deity do you revere?

Of the gods listed: Erathis - I see potential in her as representative of humanity's tendency towards building cities, formulating extensive laws, and of course enslaving savages ("for their own good") Including the so-called "evil" gods: Bane - ever since that Channel Divinity article a while...
